Which PS2 to buy?

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a PS2. Should I buy a new slimmed down PS2 or a refurbished old style one?

I've heard the slimmed down versions have problems with overheating and have seen USB fans available on eBay. Has anyone had problems with overheating or games not working properly after an hour or so of play on the new systems?

I can buy an old style refurbished PS2 from EB Games with a 13 month warranty for $10 less than a new one.

Which would you buy?

Go with the refurbished. It's hard to go wrong with a warranty like that.

This seems like an odd time to buy one, what with the next-gen releases right around the corner. Then again, it doesn't look like the PS2 is going away, especially if the PS3 $600 price tag scares people off.

The refurbished model would be my choice. I bought one a long time ago, and never had a problem with it.

I have the slimmed-down one and have had no problems with it, and you probably won't either. Plus it's great for travel.

I have the original one and it sits lonely in the corner gathering dust in the shadow of the Xbox.

If my PS2 dies, I'll probably just buy a used one from CD trade shop. I have too many games to not have one working, and I won't be buying the next gen player for probably another five years.

In an odd bit of synchronicity, I was planning on buying a PS2 today as well. I'm addicted to that frickin' 'Guitar Hero' game, and since they won't put it out for my Xbox, I have to buy a frickin' PS2. It major league SUCKS that an Xbox version of this game was not made, but oh well.

Like you, I was planning on buying a refurb at EB with the warranty. I was planning on waiting to see if the price would go down when the new PS3 hit the stores, but I don't think it will anymore. Why? Because of the $600 price tag on the PS3 and the continued demand for the PS2. Might as well buy the blasted thing now and get my fix now.

OK, stupid question, does the new 'slim' PS2 have a S-Video output?

A fat PS2 with a hard drive in it + a copy of HDLoader is a wonderful combination...

Just sayin'.

buy the thin one. its very very small.

I had the original PS2 since its launch but it died last year. I was able sell the extra cables back to EB and get some money off of the thin PS2.

I was able to get the last older style one back in 2004 at the local K-mart right before they took them off the market to make way for the slim ones. It works great, plus it has that awesome automatic disc tray. The new one is cool, because it's smaller, but it just reminds me too much of a ps 1, what with the flip top cover for the disc tray.

Is it true that the slim PS2 won't take the hard drive add-on? That could be a factor, especially if you want to play FF XI, since that actually requires it.

I believe that's true about the hard drive issue.
