Zombie/Zombi 2

So I just got this from Netflix and after a few minutes of confusion and me saying "Zombi 2? I ordered Zombie!" - I actually read the label.

But that brings up another question - Is there a Zombi 1? I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on it, only finding various results for Zombie/Zombi 2. If there isn't a Zombi 1, why would Fulci put a 2 in the title? Just a little curious, any info would be appreciated.

Dawn of the Dead was titled Zombi in Italy. To capitalize on that, Fulci's movie was retitled Zombi 2 over there. When it came over here though, it was dropped to Zombie..... although there are a few dvds out there with the original title on it.

Ah, thanks Alex! What was the title before he capitalized with Zombi 2?

I don't think it came out until after DAWN, right?
ie, I think it was always Zombi 2 in Italy.

Kinda:

Fulci's Zombi 2 was in actual fact already in production at the time of Romero's success. It was not a film created to "cash-in" on the original Zombi's popularity, however the name was taken in order to show a link between the films.

Either way, it's got that fucking shark...

And that amazing last shot.

One of my favorite movies- although I love Fulci's The Beyond just that much more.

Im such a dumbass that once I went to Best Buy to get some 'zombie' movies to watch with some friends, and I bought a dvd of Zombie and a dvd of Zombi2. Watched the first one, opened and put in the second, and well, the rest kind of writes itself.

Yes, I much prefer The Beyond.

Now if people would only realize the beauty of CONQUEST the world will be a better place.

Ah, yes Conquest, now that is actually a pretty good Fulci flick. I rented it 2 years ago, and I thought it was good, and this was before I knew about all of the bad buzz it has here on the internet. I just love the bow and the blue arrows. Great effect! The music is awesome as well.

Fulci rides that line between good, so bad-it's-good, and sometimes both. The excruciating(ly long) tarantula scene in the Beyond is, pun intended, beyond comparison. My friend and I have thought about hosting a night at the local bar of scenes along the same lines, and Fulci I think would be pretty much front and center (and it also saves people the trouble of having to sit through an otherwise retarded movie in Zombi in order to see the zombie vs. shark scene). Also, to take this opportunity to plug a couple of buddies of mine, check out Zombi. They're out of Pittsburgh/Chicago and take heavy influence from Carpenter and the Italian guys. They began sort of tongue-in-cheek, but dropped that and have really come into their own now. They've been touring extensively for the last year straight, it seems, as support for a bunch of well-respected bands: Don Caballero (currently), Isis, the Fucking Champs, Dillinger Escape Plan, to name a few. www.myspace.com/zombi or www.zombi.us. Sorry for the plug, but I figured if anyone would be interested it'd be Fulci fans.

I don't think the tarantula scene is overlong at all, especially not with the great climax where it rips the dude's eye put. Then again, I don't think ZOMBIE/ZOMBI 2/WHATEVER is retarded either.

Andrew Clarke is the best non-Goblin Goblin I've heard.

I guess I'm in the minority in that I much prefer Zombie over The Beyond. Might have something to do with age. I first saw Zombie when I was 13. I saw The Beyond when I was 29. I guess I was more discerning at 29.

I've never seen Zombi/Zombi 2.

I rent from Blockbuster (online) and they only have the old verison of "Zombie". Which has a shorter run-time than what is on the special edition Zombi 2 that is currently available. So I don't want to rent that version.

I already know what the answers are going to be (this is like tossing chum over a boat and wondering if the sharks are going to eat it) but, is this worth the blind buy?

A few points to consider before blurting out yes:

1- I've pretty much stopped buying dvd's. And now that I've gotten out of the habit, it has to be something extra-special (ie: GOJIRA, or Ultraman 3 disc) to get me to own instead of rent.

2- I've seen the Shark scene - Does the whole movie hold up or having seen that scene already, have I gotten the gist?

Thanks!

I had already seen Zombie twice, and I picked up the dvd at a Gamestop for 9.99 in mint condition, and it was actually cheaper, since I used my discount card. This was for the Blue Underground version, which is bare bones, but it has a great transfer, as well as trailers for Fulci's other films, and a really neat clear case, and great cover art. I haven't seen the Shriek Show release for sale lately, and that is the extras laden release with a commentary, and cast interviews, but if you can find either release, which are both uncut versions for around that price, or the 10-15 range, it's well worth a blind buy.
