Ladies and gentlemen, Jason "The Shitcock" Whitlock!

"You do realize that if the NFL handed out long-term guaranteed contracts to players in their late 20s and early 30s, no sane businessman would have an interest in owning a team?"

It's a gold mine.

What part of the article do you disagree with? He has something of a point about aging stars. Signing bonuses and incentive contracts do provide a good amount of income for that 29 year old running back.

Actually I agree completely with that article. Which is shocking because Whitlock is usually wrong.

The NFLPA represents the athletes of the most profitable league in North America. The fact these athletes don't have guaranteed contracts is shocking, and would indicate collusion if Upshaw hadn't already proven himself to be overmatched by Tagliabue.

His contention that NFL owners would walk away from the league if they had guaranteed contracts is laughable. League salaries are paid for by the TV deal, the tickets and concessions are just gravy. An NFL franchise is one of the best things to own in the world, it's almost impossible to not make money.

But with guaranteed contracts player salaries would decrease dramatically. The higher paid players could lose millions of dollars. The lower paid players won't lose nearly as much, but their salaries will probably also take a hit.
