Penny Arcade Announces Video Game

First News to come out of PAX:

Holy fruit fucker!

Penny Arcade, not content to pump out comics, raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for sick children and put on ginormous fanfests, is getting into the game development biz.

Tycho and Gabe announced today that they are teaming up with Hothead Games to create an indie, episodic video games based on their comic.

The first game, entitled Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, will be a comic adventure game for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. No date has yet been set for its release.

The game will be sold and delivered digitally, though the team hasn't figured out yet who will handle that aspect.

So, I'm guessing the game won't be funny either then?

heh

To be fair, these guys have done good things for children's charities and have championed some underdog games that deserved recognition, but I have yet to see a PA comic that I actually thought was funny; the best a couple of them have done is incite a fleeting chortle, but that's it.

And yes, I "get" the comic. It just isn't funny. And if the game has the same "humor" as the strip, it's in trouble.

I think PA has a large enough fanbase so the game will be at least moderately successful. In it's own small way.

And I personally love the comic.

I don't think that PA is the Boondocks of the videogame industry for which it is regarded as, but I do check it out every once in awhile because it does provide that occasional chuckle (although you definetly check out their podcast, it has the comedy gold that fans are looking for). As for the game, I'm not expecting much but I'll try it out when it launches.

Penny Arcade is great.

I doubt the game will be. Especially if it includes that lame ass "theme" by MC Front-a-Lot.

heres hoping they churn out something more worthwhile than Bone.

I spent last Christmas vacation reading all of PA's archives (seemed like a good idea at the time). How they ever became successful is mindboggling. Aside from the fact that the art style just bugs me, there's just nothing smart or funny about the strip. They reference some current game industry topic and then, consistently, end on a cricket chirping.

That they accomplish good things with their success (Child's Play, PAX, riling up Jack Thompson) is certainly to be commended, but as far as their "humor" goes....what the hell has happened to the world!

the Autobot Matrix of Leadership was passed on to the Half-Life Comic.

agreed, the stuff they do outside of the comic world, ie, Thompson, was nice.

Penny Arcade, unlike RON, is actually done by people who actually know how to be funny.

End of line.

I think PA is pretty great for the most part, and the creators strike me as people who will strive to make something fun and different with their product. Colour me curious.

Since when did all this Penny Arcade hating start? Next to CHUD, they are dollars for donuts one of the funniest sites on the internet:

Not seeing the humor there, to me, is impossible.

As for the game--hey, why not. Tenacious D's getting a movie, let PA have a video game.

The setup looked good for that but then, like all PA strips, it just doesn't do anything. I tried to like the comic, honestly, but your quote about SoaP was far more amusing.

What DO you want it to do?
Eh. I've been reading Penny Arcade for probably 6 years now, and I'm past expecting the strip to be funny. I think it's merely amusing, which is fine with me. I mostly visit the site to see what they have to say about the latest games, and to visit the forums.

That's truly terrible, in the typical PA style: there's a potential slam-dunk of a setup there about how lots of misinformed, ignorant people aren't aware that WarHammer has been around a lot longer than Blizzard has (making Blizzard the company who is ripping someone else off, not vice versa), but they throw up an airball instead.

You can't see something that doesn't exist.

What Warhammer joke could top "I will open one of my six mouths and I will sing the song that ends the world"?

I'm in the "cautiously optimistic" demographic. More often then not PA gets at least a smirk outta me. The Armadeadon arc has been a lotta fun, but I'm a mark for d20 jokes.
