What Happened to the Kubrick Se

I know there was talk of "The Shining" and Clockwork Orange" Se comming out this Sept but I havent heard any more about them.
They're coming, along with 2001 and the uncensored Eyes Wide Shut, possibly more. The current box set just recently went out of print.
Wait. By uncensored Eyes Wide Shut, does that mean we get to see Harvey Keitel and Jessica Jason Leigh's stuff? That would be extraordinary...

It would be but don't count on it. It's just the orgy scene without the CG Palpatines standing in the way, blocking the hot masked-girl-on-masked-girl-no-oral-contact-69 action.

I still dont know which version/region of Dr Strangelove to get whenever I'm going to get it.

Well, Kubrick's family has been far more willing to release material from the vaults than Kubrick himself ever was, so it's possible, however very unlikely. It's not as though Kubrick was unhappy with the performances, if I understand the situation correctly. The actors were simply unavailable for reshoots, so he just recast. Keitel and Cook would be the more likely roadblocks in making this material public. Altogether, I'd wager that all the unseen, infamous Kubrick will be released some day when his family succumbs to Warners' checkbook: the Strangelove pie fight, the Shining hospital scene, the 17 deleted minutes of 2001, Fear and Desire, and yes, the Keitel and Cook scenes in EWS.

Looks like they're supposed to be released in HD also. Sweet.

fixed.

Oh man...I was excited for these before, but now I'm just growing impatient. Glad I held out and didn't pick up the previous box set.

Also, to cognizant; I picked up the 40th Anniversary Edition of Strangelove, and I think it's pretty great. Well worth picking up.
Fucking typical...now I HAVE to buy these bastards AGAIN!!
The covers for 2001 and Clockwork Orange bite the cock on several levels, but at this point, I'm just happy the SEs actually exist. There's been a space on my shelf for a proper Kubrick box set since the day I bought my DVD player.
Gah, I'm hating the double (and in the case of 2001, quadruple) dip phenomenon. Unless these new SEs are significantly better than what's currently out there, I'm gonna stick with my already-purchased DVDs until I dive into HD. Of course, by the time that happens, there will probably be looming Extra Special Editions of Kubrick's films announced but not released.
I'm liking these SE's, and the cover art doesn't look that bad. I'm glad that I haven't picked up any of Kubrick's flicks on dvd.
I dig the black on the covers over the white of the old ones, though some classy slipcase foldout ones would be cool. They hardly do those anymore. Though perhaps I'll go for the Blu-Rays when these come out and I get rid of my regular DVDs of the titles.

The "2001" outtakes were apparently destroyed. Warners doesn't own "Strangelove", but the scene was screened at the British Film Institute (I think) several years ago.

what do you expect from Warner Bros.? I've procrastinated purchasing films like "Beetlejuice" and "The World According to Garp" for years because I'm sure that they'll get more lavish treatments on DVD.
So apparently the new SE of The Shining thats being included with the boxset is the shorter 119 minute European cut. This is bullshit. This was previously posted on Amazon's listing, which I figured was incorrect, but now WB has it listed as well.

Why exactly is it shorter?
That's pretty lame if true. More than 20 minutes cut out. They might have lost my money on that Kubrick set.
I can't believe they would put the short version on the DVD in lieu of the approx 145 minute version. This has to just be a mistake, right?
The back of the DVD shows 144 minutes, so, hopefully, it's just a mistake.

That's the HD-DVD. It and the Bluray disc are listed as 144 minutes, while the DVD is listed at 119.

that makes no sense
Maybe I'm cheap, but I spent $150 in 2001 on that first Kubrick Collection. There's nothing here to make me put down another $150. I'm cool with my first set.
Luckily, I only bought The Shining from the first set and procrastinatied on teh rest. These two disc editions look nice
post #28 of 39
I've got the Kubrick collection box, though I got rid of Dr. Strangelove when the 2-disc was released. For this, I'll probably get the blu-rays of the movies. Is there going to be a Blu-ray boxset?
So far, there's been no announcement of any HD or Blu Ray box sets. Only individual releases of the films.

I'm not too happy about that either, because buying the individual titles will add up a lot faster. But no way am I buying these on standard dvd again.
Hang on, there's a longer version of the Shining?
Don't suppose anyone could fill me in on what was cut out, and if it's worth an import?

Has anyone been able to get ahold of this box set. I went to a Walmart,Best Buy and a Target and they had nothing. Didn't even know if they were getting it in at all
post #33 of 39
I went to Best Buy at lunch and they had one left. Looks like they either didn't anticipate the demand, or they don't care.
Just ordered from Amazon and it's telling me it won't be available for 5-6 weeks. Usually they get it to me faster despite the notice, but damn.

There's also what looks like a re-release of BARRY LYNDON today. This isn't part of the SE's, right? Is this just a re-release of the prior issue?
Bit of a hassle but I got all of them but Full Metal Jacket, which is shipping soon from Amazon. Clockwork and 2001 I got on Blu-Ray for only 13.50 each at the WB lot. I also got the regular DVDs of Barry Lyndon and Lolita for 8.50 a piece. They're probably the same as the old DVDs, but they are in regular DVD cases instead of snappers so that's gotta be worth something. Then I got Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining at Best Buy. Price was awful, but I had a $5 rewards certificate. That only takes care of the tax, so its was like 50 bucks.

If I understand correctly, Barry Lyndon and Lolita are both just re-releases.

Yeah, I went to Best Buy first, they had all the individual releases but not the set. They said it didn't come with their shipment today. Also no dice at Walmart or Circuit City. Luckily, Target had a whopping two in stock, so I snatched one up.

Also, as I stated in the SPECIAL EDITION thread, THE SHINING is the 144 min. cut, not the edited version.
I swear I read somewhere (either the Digital Bits or Home Theater Forum) that the rest of the Kubrick stuff WB owned was getting SE treatment next year, which would be Barry Lyndon and Lolita. Take that with a grain of salt, though.

I would have sprung for 2001 and Clockwork Orange, had they not already been on my Christmas list. (I did buy the O Lucky Man disc, which has the same McDowell doc that Clockwork has. It's a good watch.)

Yeah, I went to Borders to get OLM, but didn't see a single Kubrick SE in stock, maybe one copy of the box set. (Even with OLM, I had to ask two people. One copy in stock, and neither Best Buy nor Circuit City had it.)
