Worst of the Worst: FM Light Rock - Page 3

But the harmonica breakdown had to be the inspiration for the theme song to Perfect Strangers so it's not a total loss.

Uncle Cracker is a poor man's Steve Hartwell from Smashmouth, and when your a poor man's that guy you should do something drastic.

I like those sythesizer intros from John Shade's post because they give a feeling of "let's take things down a notch so we can maximize cheesiness."

Has anyone mentioned "We Built This City on Rock and Roll"? As if it wasn't bad enough, the part where they use a radio report is fucking appalling.

Upon first hearing "we bulit this city" Satan ordered his minions to begin work on a brand new special wing of hell just for Starship.

That song makes Air Supply sound like Led Zeppelin

How can "Simply the Best" be anyone's favorite Tina Turner song? What about the Phil Spector stuff with Ike? Or even "Private Dancer" or "What's Love Got to Do with It?"
I've never heard much of her early stuff, so I can't comment on that. "What's Love..." and "We Don't Need Another Hero" are also good.

Slamming "More Than Words" is like slamming an Everly Brothers or Buddy Holly tune. It's simple and sappy, but it's so goddamn well-done. It's a perfect recreation (of course, it's an Everly Brothers Clone!), and it still manages to come off as sincere instead of kitschy. Plus, I didn't even own Pornografitti, and I know it wasn't the only light rock song on there (ahem - "Hole Hearted," anyone?). They weren't my thing at all, generally speaking, and "More Than Words" was undeniably played to death, but, in retrospect, it was a breath of fresh air on rock radio at the time - one of the only hard rock bands of the time who didn't have to jam their ballad down your throat with power chords and big drums.
.
Wait a minute. Slamming the Scorps while giving props to Extreme? I mean Extreme did some decent (and creative) stuff, but I couldn't put them in the same league with the Scorps.

Though while we're talking about "More than Words", I do think it's a good song, but it's immense popularity did vile things to rock radio. Suddenly the only singles that got airplay for many bands were gooey ballads.

But what about the radio report part of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla"? Anyway, "We Built This..." pales next to "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."

I forgot these...

Anything by Train or Firehouse.

Two more from Elton John:
1) Candle in the Wind
2) Crocodile Rock. This one gives Seasons in the Sun a run for the most aggressively annoying bad song.

I wouldn't either. Extreme had that one, great, uncharacteristic 50s-esque acoustic ballad. Obviously, their greatest songwriting strength lay in sentimental balladry, and it's a shame they didn't focus more on it instead of letting Nuno wank off on the limp hard rock. The Scorpions, on the other hand, had scores of utterly fucking awful, stupid, meathead rock songs, but were even worse at balladry.

That was the case before "More Than Words," too. The difference is that "More Than Words" wasn't a power ballad, but more of a genre experiment. There was nothing on the radio that sounded like it.

In fact, I sort of wonder if Gigolo Joe has them confused, since Four Non-Talents certainly did start out as wuss-rock - they only released the one album.
I would never confuse Concrete and 4 Non. My whole problem with their mention in this thread is the category of "light rock;" however, the thread has definitely opened up since the beginning.

As far as indefensible? Perhaps I tend to give them a pass because I really liked Linda Perry's work with Pink and Christina Aguilera. Neither one would be where they are today without her considerable talent/influence. Although I suppose some of Perry's best work with either one could be legitimately included in this thread.

Opening myself up to attack from one of my favorite music Chewers (DaveB)? Perhaps, but I'll go there this once.

I know that Perry worked with Pink and Aguilera, but they're not really on my radar - I couldn't tell you which songs were hers. I'd be lying if I said I had developed an opinion on her later work. I do find it sort of fascinating that she and Butch Walker (from Marvelous 3) have both carved out this odd little niche in which they "rock up" pop stars. It makes for better disposable pop than Diane Warren, I suppose.

But I'd argue that giving 4-Non-Blondes a pass on "What's Up" because of her later work is akin to giving Sting a pass on his latter day work because of his great stuff with the Police and his early solo career. My gripe is restricted solely to that particular song, which I consider one of the most annoying hits in the history of pop music, light or not.

You can complain all you want to about their songs but Barenaked Ladies are a musically tight band. Personally I like their style of pop but I can see where songs like One Week would become annoying. However I find listening to A off of Maybe You Should Drive always reknidles my love for their stuff.

I'm with DaveB on Huey Lewis as well. Not just from nostalgia but also because they are a great live show.

As far as Bettencourt goes, listen to his playing on Robert Palmer's cover of Girl U Want. It's wanktastic but in a good way!

I'll give it credit for being a direct rip-off of ELO's Sweet Talking Woman.

One classic I heard on a Lite Rock station was Power Station's "Some Like It Hot". Now my colleagues bust out the "COO COO, KA KA, CO KA KEE KA BOOM" drum fill. Daily.

Endless. FUCKING. Love

The Lionel Richie Diana Ross version as opposed to the non cheesy Carrey/Vandross version of course .

But no, it gets worse.....

"Oh for all that I've done wrong I must have done something RIIIIIIIGHT.
To deserve a hug every morning and Butterfly Kisses at night"
cue sound effects of kids playing in the yard./

Top THAT bitch.
