Marlins rookie pitcher Anibal Sanchez throws the first no-hitter since May 18, 2004.

A rookie. Awesome.

Edit: Gave up 4 walks & threw 103 pitches (67 strikes)

Okay, here's my beef with "No-Hitters" (and no, I'm not too incredibly knowledgeable about baseball, so I apologize in advance if some of this seems like Crazy Ralph rantings)...

1. If the walk was intentional, then yeah, okay, but if he just walked someone cause he couldn't find the zone, why does he get the NH credit for that?

2. If the batter hits the ball but he's caught or thrown out, then it's not a hit, I know, but it should automatically erase the pitchers chances of wearing the "No Hitter" crown for that day. The batter found you, he hit the ball, you're lucky your short stop or outfielder got in the way of it.

Basically, it seems like it takes the effort of the entire team to make sure a no-hitter happens, but for some reason the pitcher gets all the credit and, yes, that bothers me. </soapbox>

It's just a no-hitter in the sense that there is no base hit. A walk isn't a base hit, nor is hitting a batter. Pitchers have thrown no-hitters and ended up losing the game before.

Pitchers always get the credit for the team's victory, no-hitter or not. But they also get a lion's share of the blame when they stink it up so it's pretty even.

a hit is a statistic. a team that didnt actually get a hit within the rules of the game... well the pitcher pitching to them had a no-hitter, didnt he? a perfect game is something else.

in basketball, if you say a team didnt allow a field goal, it doesnt mean the other team didnt score.

Yeah, I know the basic structure of what constitutes a no-hitter, I just don't like the fact that the pitcher gets all the oohs and ahhs when a lot of the time it wasn't even him who ensured the no hitter. Just grumbling for the sake of grumbling and what not.

There has never been in the history of baseball a game where that has happened. The only way this could happen would be if the pitcher struck all 27 batters. The most strikeouts in a game is 20, a record held by Roger Clemens & Kerry Wood.

Just throwing a no hitter with the help of your defense is a huge accomplishment.

Oh I'm not questioning that, I just think the accomplishment should be spread amongst the entire team, not just the pitcher.

At any rate though, I don't want to sully up your thread with my seemingly "Everyone's a winner!" rhetoric. So, hooray for the Marlins guy! Helluvan arm on that kid and such and such!

It's true that the number of strikeouts is a good measure of how dominant the pitcher actually was, and a no-hitter with very few or no K's and a lot of walks may suggest a statistical anomaly more than a great performance. But the pitcher gets a lot of the credit for a no-hitter because generally the pitcher had to throw a pretty fucking good game to get one. Or perhaps Nolan Ryan pitched seven of the luckiest games in history.

It is always acknowledged that it was a team effort--in fact there are usually one or two great defensive plays in a game that "save" a no-hitter or a perfect game, but the defense might have to be great once or twice in the game, while the pitcher has to be great for the other 25 or 26 at-bats. As Moltisanti said, it's not like pitchers dodge the blame when they cock it up.

Randy Johnson did this too (9 innings, 20 K's), but doesn't get credit as his game went 11 innings.

Good job by the rook tonight. Man that Marlins team is playing out of their minds. I love it.

I totally missed this. Incidently, I was playing catch when this happened, I must have psychically influenced him or vice-versa. Anyway, good for him, it's about time.

Should have been a 1 hitter. The runner was safe on the last out because the SS was slow on the throw to first.

I bet the Red Sox feel like shit right now. Who would you rather have: Beckett and Lowell at a massive cost, or Sanchez and Hanley Ramirez at virtually no cost. Oops. I guess hindsight is 20/20. Kudos to Sanchez!

This pitcher used to be in the minors and played locally here with the Mudcats.

Its all over the press here in NOrth CArolina.

Technically, a perfect game is a pitcher striking out 27 guys on three pitches each. Therefore, this will do.

Does anyone remember when Bugs Bunny struck out 3 batters in a row with only one pitch? I guess that wasn't a perfect game but it was still some crazy shit.

I think it would be more difficult and more impressive to get each guy out by making him pop out to you (the pitcher) on the first pitch.

Only 27 pitches, and you, as the pitcher, are doing all the work.

Truly a perfect game that would even appease JGButler.
