Dawn of the Dead- the Argento Cut

Wow.

I've had the Dawn Ultimate Edition for a while, but I finally just watched this the other day. Haven't seen it since my friend picked up a bootleg at Chiller Theatre back in the day. Now that I've seen the original version a million times, it was a lot easier for me to compare the two.

It's interesting how much better the Goblin music makes it at times- but at the same time a lot of little moments have been lost. Like when Peter gives Stephen a pound when he takes out the zombie for him in the basement of the project, or the lighting up of the cigarettes when they take off in the helicopter. It's much more of an action film, and a lot of the personal moments have been cut, which is a shame. It also does a little bit of jumping around- like when Stephen starts going nuts hotwiring the trucks and it doesn't explain what's going on. But damn does that music improve things. It'd be interesting to see the director's cut with an all-Goblin soundtrack.

What do you guys think about it?

I prefer the Romero cut, but then again I haven't seen Argento's cut in long while. But I do remember the Goblin music being great. I've been looking for that soundtrack on CD for awhile, the only thing I could find is an vinyl LP on eBay.

I saw it recently for the first time, thought it was very cool. I'll have to watch the regular version again before I can pick a favorite. I know I like the opening scene and the end credits better in the regular version.

It's the worst cut of the three (way too short), but I cannot deny that the extra Goblin music is a huge plus. A lesser version of Dawn is better than most other horror films.

I've not seen this cut but that sounds like classic Argento. I've never been a huge fan of his work. With the exception of Tenebre and Suspiria, most of his stuff just doesn't work for me. Profondo rosso (Deep Red) and Phenomena (Creepers) are both rather boring, I think.

Ever seen Inferno, the sequal to Suspiria?
I'd highly recommend it.

Anyways, only cut I've seen of Dawn is the long one, so I'm not really in much of a position to judge.
