Lost Girls - Post-release discussion

Surely I'm not the only hard-core Moore fan that had $50 set aside for LOST GIRLS. Who's read it? What did you think?

And for those who are on the fence, or waiting for a cheaper edition: Chris Staros of Top Shelf recently commented that there are no plans for a softcover--I think they see the high price point as a buffer against possible legal trouble.

I found myself disagreeing with almost every critic out there. I thought it had some interesting ideas here and there, but ultimately, it felt a little like the "Sky Captain" movie - so close to its influences without presenting something new that it felt a bit like going to a museum of Victorian erotic writing.

Ultimately, I hate to say it, but I agree. It was much more interesting to read interviews with Moore talking about the ideas behind the book (particularly the one in "Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman") than it was to read the book itself. The narrative itself was sorely lacking in interesting characterization, a criticism that I wouldn't usually associate wtih Moore's stuff.

It certainly merits a second read, and I'm in no way sorry that I bought it, but it pales in comparison to, say, FROM HELL.

Haven't read it yet, but I can see how this might be problematic. One thing you can consistently say about Alan Moore is that he's got a very detatched, analytical style of writing (which has always struck me as strange, since he's this punk rock anarchist kind of guy). It allows him to write a lot of stuff that's amusing but rarely hilarious, that's creepy but rarely terrifying, and now it sounds like he can write something pronographic but not sexy. He writes with his brain and rarely uses his...other organs.

The mental image that brought up is far too disturbing to be discussed in a public forum.

I picked it up today. I didn't really think it was spectacular, but I will give it a second read through.
