I cannot sleep anymore

Hello, all! I have had an extended vacation from chud.com. In the last two years I have gotten married (my wife is awesome), bought a house, had a son (he looks like me, poor guy) and I almost have college finished. I would just like to point out that "they" are not kidding when they say you'll never sleep right again after having a child. It is not because he wakes up, because he sleeps for 10 hours a night, it is just that I cannot sleep. I don't know why. I sleep 4 hours a day maybe. It is very strange to have that much time on my hands - which brings me back to CHUD.com this day. I fear I may form an alter ego who starts punching me (and realize that I like it) and befriend an over-the-hill theatric rock/pop singer with huge tits named after a much maligned yet often loved ground beef dish.

Oh yeah, well... which one of us knows secret ninja moves from the government?

A long hot shower has the strange ability to wake me up in the morning and relax me for sleep at night (if needed).

Or, try reading Jane Austin....zzzzzzzzz

If you don't have one already, get a pet. My wife and I have two cats, and I'll be damned if looking at them while they're sleeping doesn't put us out within a few minutes.
Lost many a Sunday that way.
You can also folow Darkmite's advice. Shower up, get clean sheets on the bed, fresh from the dryer, put your jammies on, get your missus, and snuggle.
That, or drink many six-packs.

The cats might get you to sleep, but damn if they aren't the ones that wake you up in the morning.
Yep, the pets will definitely wake you up. Plus, if my dogs are anything to go by they'll hog the bed as well if they can!!

Get a job working construction. Ten to twelve hours a day of hard manual labor and you'll sleep like your baby.
Or if you can't or won't do construction work (don't think I could play in that field) go to the gym. That helped me out a lot. I used to have a hard time falling asleep and then when I would finally fall asleep I'd wake up every hour it seemed. Or wake up an 2am and not be able to go to sleep again until 4am (which blew, because I get up at 5am). Once I started going to the gym on a regular basis, I have been sleeping a good full 8 hours a night.

Unless my animals go insane in the middle of the night and start chewing on my child and her cries for help wake me up. But other than that.. it's all good...

Ditto that. Be tired (or even better, exhausted) at the end of the day, works like a charm.

I have been contemplating trying the gym again, but Zod's idea requires the least amount of effort.

I like this idea, only it would cause a divorce which would inturn make me not sleep again.

Somebody mentioned Weed, I have never done the stuff, so I don't know if it makes you sleepy. I wouldn't know how to get ahold of that stuff anyway. Is there something more legal that some one could suggest... like Nyquil or Tylenol pm, do they work?

It's not that difficult to locate. If you honestly don't know, a friend or co-worker will.

Did I mention I'm also an extra on the Christian Children's Fund commercials?

Boo hoo. Poor fly covered, bloated belly Psychward.

What, you want a brownie? You're not getting my 59 cents a day.
Maybe just 58 cents?

If you have the money, buy a hot tub. If you don't, find friends who have one. A good hour in a hot tub will knock me the fuck out, especially if used after working out. Throw some booze into the mix and you'll sleep even better! Or get alcohol poisoning.

Tylenol PM works for me sometimes, then in other instances it actually makes me feel jittery and more awake. I'm not sure what's up with that.

Dude, if this is true, go to the doctor. As someone who had a major (and extremely rare) sleep disorder for the better part of 5 years, getting so little sleep consistently to the point that you are in real, physical pain during the day, risking getting into an accident, fired, etc, is one of the very most stressful and obstructive things in life.

Day to day I would recommend just lying down at any point where you have even 30 minutes, or lying back down after you wake up at night, and don't get up until you've slept or your alloted time runs out, because as little sleep as you get you'd basically have to fall asleep. Most of the time this stuff has more to do with people psyching themselves out and getting up without allowing themslelves an adequite opportunity to truly relax and fall asleep. (Frequently after being up rediculously long, it would take me more than two hours to fall asleep as I was so wired, uncomfortable and convinced I "couldn't sleep".)

But, you may have a legitimate medical thing, and going to a doctor and having them put an actiwatch (not a watch, but a device that looks like a small watch that has an internal gyroscope which tracks your movement) on you for the typical two week jaunt seems more than justifed if this has been going on for an extended period of time. This will determine how much you really do sleep and when you sleep, because many people who claim to get so little sleep are actually falling asleep all the time and not knowing it, because they are so out of it tired. It will also provide useful clues to help the doctor find out if you actually do have a physical ailment that is preventing you from sleeping.

You and I have to hook up sometime. It is freaky having someone (you) in Cali. know my home town, and me not know who you are. Drop me a line when you are going to be in town!

I have been thinking about going to the doctor, but he'll prob. just tell me to get more exercise and stop working third shift. None of which I can do.

I've begun to think that night shift is what's doing it to me, too...

Jerk off (or have sex, depending on how long you've been married). Just be careful not to fall asleep in the sticky stuff.

As for working out... I can see how that might work but it's had the opposite effect on me. I just recently started working out again (couple of months ago) and the only time I can find to do it is in the evening after the wee-one is asleep. The problem is my blood actually starts pumping then and sleep is difficult to achieve. I don't have trouble sleeping all night (though I tend to wake up early) but getting there is difficult.

I've been sleeping 5 to 5.30 hours a day at most for the last decade with 4 hours of sleep very not very uncommon. I haven't had any negative effects as far as I know and I've been working 60 hour weeks for the last 2 years with only a week off.I figure I'll catch up when I retire.

Something about posting on CHUD has given me 6 hours worth of sleep today. It was glorious, we'll see what happens in the future.

I'm gonna be honest, the exact same thing happened to me after I posted in this thread.

I got 2 hours after the initial 6 that weren't very pleasant...but I'm grateful for the initial 6.
