I guess I'll start this off with a bang...

The New York Islanders will announce today that they have signed goalie Rick DiPietro to a 15-year, $67.5 million contract. The deal will pay DiPietro $4.5 million annually.

15 years.

FIFTEEN.

All 67 Million will be paid should he have a career ending injury.

Holy shit.

There a very few handful of players worth that much money for that long, and he's not one of them.

By far.

That general manager is dead meat.

Hurricanes announce yesterday that Kaberle will be out for 4-6 months following surgery. Damn.

Well the Canes should still be in good shape for the season! Let's go for 2.

It's all Charles Wang. Garth Snow simply put the paper work together. Wang is going to lose a lot of money in the next few years. This story will only get more and more interesting as time goes on.

What's funny is that they already made the mistake of signing Yashin for 10 years and 75 millions bucks.

Look where that lead...
No wonder guys like Neil Smith and Pat LaFontaine got out when they did. Does this guy like to lose money or what?

This year promises to be very fun for those of us in Western New York, shitty new jerseys or not.

Great Opening game last night with the Hurricanes vs the Sabres.

I hate that the Hurricanes lost, but it was in a shootout so it was a very close game.

The Hurricanes might have a few new faces like Gleason and Tanabe, but the core group is still there and playing a heck of a lot better than they did during Preseason.

Props to Staal and Cole for scoring in the first game and the Hurricanes still prove to be the best in the league at killing Power Plays!

While I doubt they can defend their title this year, I'll be watching every game regardless.

go Canes!

Sadly, I missed the entire thing: work kept me until 9, then the radio signal went all wonky in the car on the way home, and I missed the shootout while booting up the online feed. But a good start nonetheless.

Being a lifelong Sabres/Bills fan, the praise given the Sabres by the media scares the crap out of me. There's been too many years where the term 'preseason Cup favorite' means 'bounced in the 2nd round of the playoffs'. Then again, they could storm to the President's Trophy... who knows?

Oilers vs Flames, battle of Alberta, Oilers win easily, 3-1. Woot!

But I didn't tonight, thankfully! I turned on the game while getting in the car to go home after work. Apparently it was just after Briere scored to make it 4-3, and I was able to keep the signal during the drive home through the rest of the game and shootout. (You know you're a fan when you're sitting in a supermarket parking lot listening to the end of a game. The second game of the year, of all games to get fired up about...)

Kings lost to the Ducks 4-3 but there's definitely optimism towards the game. A lot of people are picking the Ducks to win it all and going into their stadium an outplaying them for the majority of the game is atleast something to be impressed with. Anze Kopitar was amazing. It looks like he's going to be a huge star.

And the Slovenian Assassin adds 3 more assists. Keep 'em coming!
The Bruins make an inauspicous debut, getting bitch slapped 8-3.

Looks like another long season for a once-proud franchise.
They followed it up witha W though. Savard and Chara should help 'em. I'm not sure how their goaltending will hold up.
The Hurricanes finally looked as awesome as they did last year after last nights 5-0 victory over the Capitals.

Eric Cole is getting back in gear too with a hat trick!

With the addition of Stillman back in the line-up by December, this is when the Hurricanes can get some more needed wins.

They are still the only team who can beat the Thrashers.
And the Sabres keep rolling along. Seriously, without Tallinder, Afinogenov and now maybe Miller for an extended period (but probably not), that 13-1-1 mark isn't going to look too good by the end of the month, since they've got nine games in sixteen days.

I look forward to that rematch with the Thrashers, though.

From the apathetic abyss, it is awakened.

According to ESPN's page, as of 12-20-06 Rory Fitzpatrick of the Vancouver Canucks has the second highest vote count for Defensemen in the upcoming All Star Game with 428,832. All as a write in candidate. But who can blame the fans with his stellar no goals, no assists, and minus 1 rating in 19 games!

Anybody have more information about this odd phenomenon? There seem to be quite a few election ad-style videos on Youtube that might account for some of this strangeness. Comment on the credibility of the voting system? The All Star Game itself? Or is this just an extension of the Time Man of the Year nonsense?
I heard something about that - some guy decided that he liked Fitzpatrick's blue-coller, grind-it-out style, so he started campaigning for him; it's just picked up steam and apparently become an internet phenomenon.

It appears that any sort of slap at the voting system or the All-Star Game is strictly coincidental.

But those games are jokes, anyway - they may have had a purpose back when sports news was relegated to 3 minutes after the weather, but in the days of season ticket packages and ESPN's blanket coverage, you see the stars in ANY sport plenty without a special game showcasing them.
wow it really seems like many teams are just beating up on each other. The Ducks are still great but it seems the Sabres are losing some steam now?

Being a hurricanes fan, I'm just glad they are inching their way back to the top.

Most importantly its great to see Justin Williams getting some recognition at the All-star game.

I know the Canes lost Saturday night but I forgot to post about Ray Whitney's awesome Hattrick in 1:40 seconds on Thursday.

That's why he's called the Wizard! Go Canes!
The Canes look dumber by minute, trading Belanger for a player they had last year who's not even a good player. Tim Gleason's 3 point's was really worth Jack Johnson. Hahahaha!
We do have some questionable players this year, and I hated that we traded Belanger but he was playing in the third line anyway. I know he's a good player and he deserves to go somewhere he can get some good minutes.

At least New Hurricanes Walker and Tanabe are playing quite well for us this year. Gleason and Hutchinson were the Worst additions to our lineup.
Its pretty much official, Forsberg goes to the Preds. If you read any part of the interview he gave, you can tell he's less than excited about the move. If he decides to play next year, I can bet money that he is going to use his free agency to get on another team.

There goes my hopes of seeing him in the Winged Wheel.....damn. Oh well, there's always free agency. And Detroit already has some salary room, let alone if we lose a couple of Vets in the off season. Or if Datsyuk leaves us, which his agent has been threatening for a couple years.
So you would've been ok with the Wings giving up essentially 3 1st rounders and a 3rd for an injury proned player, no matter how good he is, for 30 games?
Bump.

Jesus, I'm exhausted. That Sabres-Sens game tonight felt like a playoff game.

All-out brawl, including the goalies? Lindy Ruff almost hopping over the median and beating the holy hell out of Bryan Murray?

Classic.
Well ill jump in here to show some love to the Thrashers!

After picking up Tkachuk and Ballenger they have gone 4-0. Hopefully they can stay on top this time and not lose 7 in a row again hehe.

And Hossa is a beast!
The only team that can successfully beat the Thrashers is the Hurricanes and they whacked us Hurricanes on Sunday, so I think that Atlanta has a pretty darn good chance this year to win it.

At least the East Coast division.
Tampa is 5-2 against the Thrashers so far this season so I wouldn't count them out yet...assuming of course either of Tampa's extremely streaky goalies show up for the rest of the season. Its been real close with the two teams swapping the lead back and forth but one way or another it looks like they will play each other in the playoffs in the end, barring unexpected catastrophy from either side.

And how can you not be excited to be a Lightning fan when you have Lecavalier and St. Louis on a line together holding 2nd and 3rd in points (damn you Crosby!)
I was down in Orlando for the last 5 days. Wow. They don't even SHOW Hockey on TV down there and they have 2 freakin' NHL teams.

I would have loved to watch the Canes beat Florida last night on TV but not going to happen in the hotel I was at. S-U-X

Just got out of the Thrasher Sabres game and man it was crazy with the thrashers pulling it off in OT.Great game!
The Devils, who have won four of five and have 102 points, fire their coach yesterday. I have no clue what Lamoriello, the Devils GM, is thinking. This is the third time in 7 years he's fired the coach with a week left in the season. 2000 worked out, because they won the Cup, but this year the team was on the upswing with the return of injured players. 7 coaches in 7 seasons, the fact the Devils win games is amazing.

Hockey Playoffs start tomorrow night! Canes are out so I'm pulling for the Pittsburgh Penguins!
