2006 Ryder Cup Discussion Thread

Starting this thread may be pure folly on my part, but I figure that there has to be more CHUD golfers than just me. This year's Ryder is the jumping off point, but feel free to add any golf related content you wish. The general intelligence on these boards should trump the pompous boorishness that is normally found on more traditional boards. So...

Do we (the USA team) have a shot this year?
I am looking forward to the Ryder Cup its probably my favourite golf event to watch on TV. As far as your guys chances though. I think that depends on Tiger, he really needs to have a dominant performance for once. He has basically been brutal in Ryder Cup play. If he can go 5-0 or at least 4-1 the U.S does have a chance in my opinion. If he is his usal 2-3 or 2-2-1 I just cant see you guys doing it especially with like 4 or 5 first time players this year.

It's all about Tiger. Who else is on the team anyway?

Golf and pompous boorishness go hand in hand.

You'd have a better chance of finding the Lost Ark than a pompous ass among the golfers that I shoot with, but I (mostly) agree with your statement, GFC. That's one of the reasons that I volunteer my time as a coach, to try to open the game to a broader audience.

That's the line-up.

Note to Irish magazines: Do you really want to piss off Tiger Woods?
I know that was pretty stupid. Tiger has never ever seemed super motivated for the Ryder Cup. I dont think that is going to be a problem this year.
JJ Henry? Vaughn Taylor? Zach Johnson? It's not looking good. The depth of a Ryder Cup team is always important, just Tiger playing well isn't going to cut it.

Just say you play golf, you don't have to beat around the bush like that.

Looking forward to the start tomorrow, weather permitting of course. I'm really pretty divided on loyalties toward the teams though. As an Englishman I want Europe to win, but then I'll cheer for my adopted country too. I guess I'll settle for some great golf played & in the right spirit.

The media seem to be making Europe the favourites to win & to be honest I think they will, but I wouldn't want to bet on it. The way the forecast is it sounds like all of them are gonna have some tough conditions to play in, and I don't think either team has a real advantage in that.

I'd really like to start playing golf again, it's been 5 years since I last hit a ball & there are some good looking courses around here. Maybe once I get my pool-playing career back on track I'll take to the fairways to remind myself how much I suck at golf!!

After morning fourball matches, Europe leads 2.5 to 1.5. Woods/Furyk win 1-up over Montgomerie/Harrington, Cink/Henry halve their match with Casey/Karlsson. Garcia and Olazabal blitz Toms/Wetterich 4 & 1, Clarke/Westwood 1-up over Mickelson/DiMarco. One and a half points isn't terrible coming out of the moring matches, but I think that Cink and Henry probably let one get away. They squared the match at 14 after being 3 down through 10, then went up 1 through 15.

Well its 5-3 for the European team. Typical Ryder Cup play the euros make the key puts and the U.S don't. They better get within a point by the end of tommorrow or its over due to the tie score it goes to the defending champ rule. Tiger and Furyk didn't play well at all today so to come out 1-1 is as good as can be expected. Sergio played great down the stretch two mid irons to 2.5 feet wrapped up that match for him and Donald. Phil and Dimarco better pick up the pace or the U.S is in for a very tough time in my opinion.

why oh why cant sergio perform in majors as he does in the ryder cup?

I think the reason is because in the Ryder Cup he has a teamate to fall back on so he feels he doesnt need to be perfect to beat Woods he can still make the odd mistake. In majors he is all alone and has to do it himself. Thats part of the reason why Woods Ryder Cup record is crappy they dont fear him because they have backup plus Woods uncharacteristically misses simple puts he never misses when majors are on the line.

Also match play is a different animal all together you can double boogie in match play all it is is one whole and easy to bounce back from. In stroke play you double boogie in a major and most time you fall 4 or 5 spots down the leader board and the tournament is over.

Congratulations to the European team, once again. I wish that we could take the Cup as seriously as they do.
Actually I think the U.S take it too seriously they walk a round with long faces like they are going to a funeral. If they had some fun relaxed they might do better. Oh and if Phil Mickelson didnt play like every hole was the last hole of this years U.S Open.

I almost sat up last night to catch the live broadcast of the final day's play but bailed out once I realised NBC were starting late again. I figured I'd still wake up early enough to watch a good chunk of it but when I turned on the TV it was pretty much all over. I was expecting Europe to win but they did it a bit quicker than I thought they would.

Fair play to them, they really did play well. Lehman was very complimentary in defeat but was it just me or did Verplank sound like he was having a dig with his comments? Something along the lines of having the best players doesn't help if they're not real team guys? Maybe that's the answer for the USA.
The thing is this year the U.S didn't have the best players. The average world ranking for the Americans was in the high 20's and for the Euro's low 20's. This was the first time in a long time that on paper the European's had the better team. You are right though the U.S guys dont even seem to like each other and the European guys look you regular weekend hackers out having a good time and drinking with buddies while playing a round.
Those guys had far more fun than I've ever had on a golf course. To be honest even when playing with friends I don't talk to them much, I'm usually too far away searching for my ball!

Golfers on Chud? This makes me happy.

Yep. Every kind of lunatic is available on CHUD!

Verplank was/is kinda pissed that he didn't see more action. He felt that he was playing well and could have helped the squad more. I agree with the criticism of Philly Mick, though. We all know that he shuts it down after the PGA every year, but c'mon, suck it up and play some golf! He flat-out stunk this weekend. Also, as an American with Irish roots, I'm very happy for Darren Clarke. He deserves all the joy he can find.

Even though the Cup is over, I'm still always willing to talk golf, especially since there are only four more weeks of the season here in Northern Michigan. I live vicariously through my warm weather brethren from November to April.

But you can swing a club in the house year round.

Clearly, Europe has a more friendly team spirit and cares more about the Ryder Cup than the US. The US will probably get their asses kicked just as bad in the next Presidents Cup, the international team will be stacked.

Maybe we should keep this thread going or start a new one for our various golf stories. Anything from pro golf to the usual horror stories that abound whenever I pick up a club!

I did just add the news of Byron Nelson's passing to the Dead Celebrities thread. I'm glad he made it to receive his honorary admiralty at his tournament this year. I really must make the effort to go to that or the Colonial sometime, both of them are within 30 minutes drive for me.

Ade, make the time! I've gone to the Buick Open in Grand Blanc twice with my family and it has been a blast. I'd advise making one of your days (if possible) Wednesday for the pro-am. The players are in better spirits and the crowds are smaller, so it is easier to follow certain players, if you want to do that. When we went the last time, my son got over thirty autographs on his program, a ball from both Dean Wilson and Steve Flesch, a toussle of the hair from Jim Furyk, and an offer of a putting contest from Jerry Kelly.

I do set up a hitting station in the garage for the winter, and a new simulator place has opened about twenty miles north of me, so I may need to try that for a fix. I like Ade's idea about keeping this going, though. Probably because I grew up in a poor small town, golf has always been about comradery and community.

I've always found trying to perfect your swing indoors and then hitting some wiffle balls off the back porch to be a vastly underrated activity.

I've got three acres of unspoiled hayfield behind my house that catch a lot of porch-hit golf balls from mid-February to April 1. After the all the snow melts, my son and I pick 'em up, and start all over again. It has helped his game immensely, being 11. Me being 37, it just helps me stay static.

Everyone, I'm taking Ade's advice and starting a new "All Things Golf" thread. This thread has been enjoyable, so I hope we can keep another one going.
