Azumi finally gets a R1 dvd.

What'd you guys think of this? Comparisons to Versus? Keep in mind that I absolutely love Versus, every bloated second of it.

This is a pretty great set. Really dug the movie- although I was a little surprised to find out that it's the shorter cut, and not the director's, which is something like 13 minutes longer. It's a little overlong as it is though- Kitamura sure likes his 2 hour+ films.

Awesome and brutal. I love the beginning twist (assassin test), and the relentless village deaths.

And yeah, Versus is the bomb.

Sadly the stuff that gets cut out is a lot of action scenes. I have both the international version and the Optimum version which has a great duo of documentaries and the standout thing between them is that the first real action scene (the assassination attempt on the cliffside with the ninjas and Kambei) has a ton of stuff added, particularly including Kambei and his gun. The last 20 minutes are wonderous partially because of how arduous it is to reach that point and I love the trio of brothers.

Damn. That is a shame then.

There are some really great docs on this one too (like the one that shows Azumi get cracked in the head the first day of shooting!)- along with a lot of little featurettes on the making of the english version. Some stuff with the voice actors, which I think is a little silly- because they point out all the trouble they go to in order to match up the words with the mouths of the people talking. I watched the original language track anyway...

Hey, did that spinning shot at the end make you sick? I was with a few friends when I watched it who got dizzy- I loved it, though.

That shot is greatness, I love the fact a massive action scene climaxes with a U2 video reference. Did you see the documentary which essentially demonstrated that the director hated the producer and vice versa/the stunt guy hated the director, the cast hated the stunt guy, the director hated the cast, and everyone hated everyone else?
