The Baxter

I have never smiled more gleefully through an entire film as I did with this gem. A truly satisfying romantic comedy that hits all the right notes. I guess it helped that I completely identified with the main character. Excellent soundtrack, performances, dialogue. Perfect. It's like a love-note to the comedies of the 40's.

Exactly. I'm really surprised it's still not very well known, because it deserves better.

It does, and I can't wait to see what Showalter does next. Now I feel the need to see some other stuff he's been involved with. I watched The State, and was a fan, but I have yet to see Wet Hot American Summer and other things.

Yeah, if you liked the Baxter, you'd probably like Stella. I'm pretty sure the first season is out on DVD now.

Wet Hot American Summer is great too, although I wish Janeane Garafalo and David Hyde Pierce had not been in it. But really, Paul Rudd is the best reason to watch that movie.

You taste like barbeque; I don't like you anymore.

Anyway, Stella was cancelled by Comedy Central, so the DVD is unofficially the whole series. They are holding out hope of winding up elsewhere.

Devin review.

For some reason I don't remember the details of this film all that well. On the whole, I enjoyed the premise and the cast, but came away feeling that it felt a little gimmicky towards the end. Good debut for Showalter, though.

Hmm, I did not really see it as being gimmicky, but that's probably because I loved the world and characters he created so much that the whole movie felt very natural to me (even if a bit exaggerated).

And come to think of it, I most likely discovered that movie because of Devin's review.

Wet Hot American Summer is probably my favorite comedy of all time (I wouldn't be lying if I said I've seen it nearly 30 times), so I had very high expectations of this movie. At first I didn't like it, as Showalter's vocal style was very strange to me. As the movie went on I really grew to like it. I should rewatch it soon.

I watched WHAS so much I forgot how uneven it was to me on first viewing. Here, what seem like pauses between jokes caught me even more off guard. Before I had to return the rental, though, I had replayed the closing credits a thousand times simply because of the song, Just a Body, by the King of France. In the context of the movie, it's kind of a perfectly gentle reminder not get too worked up over romantic entanglements. And the mugging faces of the actors under it are a good music video, very simple and idiosyncratic facial movements.

Also, the Dinklage wedding planner/Williams hiding scene moves like a screwball comedy and is endlessly replayable. And that feeling expands to a few other scenes as well.

I really liked this movie too. Better in fact, than the somewhat similar 40 Year Old Virgin.

Similar how?

I watched this because Damon's great review/tangent for No Strings Attached referred to it.  A really cute movie.

I love this movie. It's so sweet, and also funny in just the right places ("and I said, bananas don't come from a factory because they're not manufactured, and--"). Between Ms Banks (a Berkshire County native) and Mr Showalter, you have a perfect night out at the movies

PS I have an autographed version of this DVD that my sister got Michael Sho to sign for me:)

Michelle Williams is fucking adorable in this. There is no other way to say it.

She definitely had a "Shirley MacLaine from The Apartment" vibe going on here.
