Somebody needs to make a movie that features both "Thank God for white people" and a Magic Negro character. It could be like THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE only instead of playing golf, Bagger Vance ends Apartheid.

I never saw the movie, I thought Matt Damon was Bagger Vance. Well then, Rannulph Junuh (ed: THE FUCK?) ends Apartheid with the help of some folksy homespun black advice from Bagger Vance.

The trailer made it seem like the film has the exact same structure as The Last Samurai, with the hokey voice over at the beginning, 'They say...'. Almost sounded like Timothy Spall too.

I think it's great that movies are finally being made showing the plight of the white people and the hardships we have to go through to help save the peoples of the rest of the world from themselves.

Vance teaches Junuh how to dance, and Junuh ends apartheid after he gives a speech about how all along he thought he was teaching Bagger Vance something, but in the end it was Bagger who was teaching him.

And for those of you wondering: that's not actually a still from RADIO, but is actually from Zwick's next film, RETARDED BLACK SAMURAI, aka SHOPPING CART SHOGUN. (買物車の将軍) It's like the BABY CART series, only Ogami Itto (a CGI of Tomisaburo Wakayama) pushes around a retarded Cuba Gooding Jr. in a shopping cart. And then they get saved by Tom Cruise. Heartwarming, really.

One quick thing, it actually isn't that bad an accent, although he has been terrible in the past. I was in South Africa last month and in the suburbs of Jo'burg the vast majority of whites are Afrikaan and they sound like that, it is a fairly preposterous patois in itself. There are drop offs in a few of the lines of dialogue where he goes back to American, but overall he sounds okay.

I doubt it is Mr. Zwick, but rather the moviegoing public who demands huge stars (and therefore at this point in time generally Caucasians) to make this sort of pricey epic profitable. Take Cruise out of Samurai and you're probably looking at a lot of red ink.

its happened in too many of his movies not to at least partially blame zwick. maybe the studios are saying 'cast this guy, or it wont get made', but that doesn't give him a free pass.

What does it have to do with big budget historical films? BLOOD DIAMOND doesn't need to be a huge budget movie. It's just that this guy keeps making movies about minority or foreign experiences through white eyes.

Seriously, imagine if he had made ROOTS. What a disaster when the whole thing is from Edward Asner's POV.

In a few of the scenes, he sounds like a regular ol'Afrikaaner. In several of them he just sounds nasal. Sadly, several of the edits that appear to be from the same scene (with Connelly) alternate between accent and crap, which suggests his accent will come and go throughout the film.

I don't think there can be any negative word that spreads about the last thirty seconds of a film. Which is why I say there should be some sort of White Conquers All movie, perhaps from Zwick, that ends with the other races stabbing an A-Lister to death just as he believes he's freed his alien "brothers".

That's where I don't follow. The white leads don't exactly free anybody in Glory or Samurai. Unless you count the afterlife as a form of freedom, which I suppose it is.

It is indeed pretty great and Whitaker deserves an Oscar nom. He's superb. Really interesting take on Amin. There's some really graphic torture though that could have been just as effective offscreen. Tough to watch.

I was going to say something about Kevin Bacon bringing such a bright white light of goodness to the African tribe in the immortal classic AIR UP THERE, but after reading the famous works of Delamorte and Whiskerando I'd much rather think about the SHOPPING CART SHOGUN and the magical negro in all of us that is Bagger Vance. In a time of need I just look down at my bracelet and say to myself "what would my magical negro do?" and almost inevitably he says to break off a tree branch and find a shopping cart.
