Movies you wish were getting the Criterion treatment

I really wish some of the early Zhang Yimou films would be released by Criterion, especially Red Sorghum (I can't even find it on DVD - only on VCD) and Raise the Red Lantern (I'd love to see it with the picture really cleaned up).

What other movies do you think have been snubbed by arguably the best DVD publisher out there?

EDIT: my grammar sucks...

I keep hearing of a rumored Criterion BOTTLE ROCKET release to complete the Wes Anderson DVDs.

Jean-Luc Goddard's Breathless.

I would love to see all of Todd Haynes' releases get some well-deserved treatment. Commentaries, docs, whatever.

Criterion can't just pick and choose movies, you know. Many films go out through other distributors and they have no way to get them.

I think A Midnight Clear deserves it. Not only it's one of the best war movies ever, it also has a very shitty full-screen dvd.

OK, so "snubbed" was probably the wrong word to use. In a perfect world, though, there are certain films we all wish could get a release like Seven Samurai...

I want to see Tsui Hark's Peking Opera Blues. I know its on DVD but its some shitty bare-bones region 0 thing, non-anamorphic and probably dodgy subtitles. I've read nothing but good things about it.
I want to see Francis Ford Coppolla's Dracula. I think Criterion did a laserdisc version of this already & the dvd is criminally barebones.

Some movies have both Criterion releases and other DVD releases. How does that work? Does the DVD distribution deal expire or something?

Since I first saw Stalker and realized how it's kind of difficult to find on DVD, I've always wanted Criterion to release that.

I'd like to see them bring out Resnais' "Last Year at Marienbad." They did a great job with "Night and Fog," and I think that it would be fantastic if they continued on with more of his older work. Last Year at Marinebad would be the perfect film for the Criterion treatment.

Rolling Thunder needs it done right now. Tarantino claims this is one of his favorites, so where is it? He can prop up shit like Switchblade Sisters, but RT is on the verge of being forgotten. Makes no sense.

Yes! This is sometimes rerun on Starz-owned channels. This is one of the few films I've seen cold - knowing absolutely nothing about the film, not even a synopsis. As a result, I like showing it to people without explaining it. The scene in the shed with the rope kind of catches you off guard, and the minutes following the coin robbery up to the hook sharpening completely blew my mind.

I would love to see The Graduate get a serious special edition. I don't care from whom. Just a DVD that gives it the loving treatment it deserves.

"The Road Warrior". If "Armageddon" and "the Rock" can get one, why not?
Oh, and every Gilliam film that they haven't already done a release for(maybe not "12 Monkeys", that has an excellent DVD already).
I read a while back that a Criterion for "the Fisher King" was in the works, but haven't heard peep since.

That's the old style Litmus! Keep up.

Oh, and I'd also like to see Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine from these guys.

I hate the new style. So does Chuck Norris.

I know Woody Allen doesn't like watching his own movies so a commentary is unlikely, but the lack of features on the Annie Hall and Manhattan DVD's makes my heart cry.

There needs to be some kind of Road Warrior special edition, Criterion or not.

I own this on Laserdisc and it's the only reason why I still use the machine. I love this movie.

Did you notice the main bad guy? That's Rosco P. Coltrane- James Best. One year before Dukes started production. Light years away from the bubbling sheriff.

Tommy Lee Jones is outstanding. I think this was only his second co-starring role.

Why Devane never became a bigger star is a mystery. He did a few more films and did the tv series, Knots Landing in the early 80's. He pops up every so often in stuff, but nothing as good as Thunder.

The very first DVD I ever bought way back in the spring of 1998. It's a pixelated mess.

Would like to see Song of the South get a proper release.

Criterion released laserdisc versions of The Fisher King and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and he provided commentary for both discs.

But Sony owns the home video rights for both films and they don't want to play ball with Criterion for the DVD rights for now.

That's too bad, really.

I wish every movie released received the Criterion treatment.
It's apples and oranges–Your Seven Samurai is my Repo Man. My Repo Man is your Harry In Your Pocket, which is somebody else's Short Circuit 2. On and on...

Criterion delivers on quality and also adds the prestige. But I don't buy anything onless I really want it, so when I dole out for ULTRAMAN, I'd like even it to get the treatment I feel it deserves, which is the Criterion treatment.

I wish they would put out The Game edition that they put out on Laserdisc.

In my dreams, I own fully loaded DVDs of Chinatown and Bonnie and Clyde. Yeah, my dreams are kind of pedestrian... damn it.

How about Monsters Squad.

Well, I would have said "Death Race 2000" was an unlikely choice, but hell, they just released "Equinox" so why the hell not? Also, more conventionally, I dunno who has to be blown to get American releases for Alejandro Jodorowsky's movies, but if it happens, it NEEDS to be Criterion. I remember they had an anticipated slate of "cult" movies that was to be headed by a release of "El Topo", but apparently that never happened.
I heard a rumor that El Topo was still a possible candidate for 2007.

Either way, someone needs to give Jodorowsky's films the special edition treatment, because the man's not getting any younger.

I'll settle for just scene selection. There's no way Lynch is gonna shed any light on this one.

I thought ABKCO was giving them a proper Region 1 release in the near future...

Chimes at Midnight is probably a pipe dream, but I'd love to see it.

I'd definitely like to see Criterion take a crack at The Conformist as well.

wish all Mann movies went to Criterion

would want Last of The Mohicans first, then Manhunter
post #40 of 47
I'm still waiting for Pacino's Looking for Richard to come out on DVD period. A Criterion would be too good to be true. Which is why it never will be. And I think Bottle Rocket is a must if I were Criterion.

Other than that, all I can say is that I strongly second the Mann films. I keep walking by The Insider on sale for 13 or 14 bucks only to remember it's essentially bare.
I second Gilliam's Adventures of BM & Fisher King.

Actually I've been hoping for a Criterion of The Insider. Just imagine this:

- Full length feature commentary by Michael Mann
- Full length feature commentary by Michael Mann, Jeffery Wigand and Lowell Bergman
- A behind the scenes making of 'The Insider' documentary (interviews with cast and crew)
- The full length trail of the seven heads of Big Tabacco (or just certain segments... mayhaps a documentary about it?)
- Interviews with the real life counterparts discussing the situation and movie (Mike Wallace wouldn't agree though! so poo on him!)
- The full length, unedited 60 Minutes segment featuring Wigand and subsequent ones
- An interview with Dante Spinotti discussing the cinematography
- The full Vanity Article the film was based on along with Michael Mann discussing how he turned the article into the script
- Behind the scenes photos taken by Michael Mann
- Domestic and International Trailers and TV Spots
- Domestic and Foreign poster gallery

My cover sucks but what the heck.

Touchstone (or rather BVE) has let Wes and M Night take there films to Criterion, but I hear the Touchstone head never wants to work with Michael again so who knows how they feel about him coming back, but it is by far the best film they have ever co produced.
