Wow dude. It's going to be okay. Really.

"The ones that cost your penis..." is awesome, though, thanks. Also, didn't know that the Boroughs had Presidents. Cool. Also, this movie will suck.

Let's chewers start a campaign to get Devin elected for next President of Brooklyn. What do you say, folks?
Devin, out of curiosity, have you ever been mugged? Not trying to be snide or anything, just wondering....
Devin, what is happening in Brooklyn has been happening there for years, and it's been happening everywhere else. Is it really that big a problem that your hood isn't really cool because they totally uncool people are moving in? I can relate to what you're saying, because the same thing is happening in my neighborhood where I've been for years, but really, what are you going to do about it. The real problem is what is happening to the poor people that are forced to leave the neighborhood due to skyrocketing rents, right?

Oh, and is this movie the one where the two dudes realize that they can get a tax break if they get married, so that's why they get married, or am I thinking of something else entirely?

Devin, you work at an NPO by day, write for a movie website and say things like:

Seriously. Fruity margs are dangerous because they taste so good and so little like alcohol.
You are one trip to upstate in a Volvo to watch the leaves change away from being one of the yuppsters.

You guys don't know how annoying it is in NYC right now. I lived in Brooklyn for around 6 months and was one of the only native new yorkers around. Got the fuck out of there real quick and moved to queens. Eh, can't win them all.

I love these people that move into cheap semi-ghetto areas and wonder why they get mugged all the time. It's hysterical. A word of warning to anyone looking to move here- we can always tell who's a transplant.

Are you saying people get mugged in NYC because natives of the neighborhoods can tell they're "transplants", so they decide to mug them?

I am against gentrification just as much as anyone, but I really don't understand this attitude against newcomers in general. Why have a beef with people moving into your neighborhood, rather than having a beef with the policy-makers in your city who make it possible for poor natives of these neighborhoods to be forced out?

Whatever, this movie is most likely going to suck. When is the last time Adam Sandler was funny?

Yep.

Same reason tourists get jumped. Because they look out of place and clueless... they're easy targets.

I just kind of object to your statement because I don't really think that's entirely true - as if everyone walking down the street looking a certain way definitely gets jumped for that reason, also the general tone from people complaining about out-of-towners moving in, kind of a sense of pride, like these people deserve to get jumped just because they're moving in. That's really not fair. I empathize with yours and Devin's anger and frustration but I think it is totally misdirected.

I live in Providence - there is a lot of gentrification happening here. Real estate developers are buying old mill buildings in working class neighborhoods and converting them into luxury condos for yuppie Bostonians to move into - it's driving out people who have lived here for generations - it fucking sucks. But the people responsible for it are the local politicians and developers, not the people moving in, as annoying as they are.

So, when a native New Yorker gets mugged, what's his excuse?
I live in Orlando area and because of gentrification, I can't even afford to buy a home in the shitty neighborhoods that I wouldn't feel safe in for my family. Real Estate is at a premium here (as it is in NYC & Boston).

On the otherhand, I grew up in an average & affordable, isolated Pennsylvania townhouse community where (gradually) the bad-element moved in (we were directly between NYC & Philadelphia), bringing drug dealing, car theft, and break-ins with it. Luckily, my family moved out when it got too bad.

Unaffordable housing, yuppies, & foo-foo drinks suck, but I take some pride in living in a neighborhood where my wife can take my daughter for a walk without being shot/stabbed/raped/mugged.

The culture is different in NYC. You could probably get mugged anywhere if you're not careful & high property value doesn't guarantee anyone's safety.

People get mugged because the muggers want money and generally if you see white people in a shitty neighborhood, odds are they have some. Not to say that there isn't black on black crime, but if you stand out like a sore thumb, chances are you're an easy target.

I live in the same neighborhood as Devin and my running joke is that when I moved in 7 years ago I was the only white person on the block. Today I'm the only black person. In just over 5 years, the neighborhood has changed drastically. All the local flavor has been pushed out and in their place are coffee bars and lounges, hip clothing stores, and organic supermarkets and restuarants. People in my building now look at me as if I'm going to mug them, even though I've lived in the building longer than any of them. Fuckers.

The thing that gets me about gentrification is how much it inflates housing prices and rents. Out of towners don't really know how much anything is worth and pay an exorbanant amount for something they could've gotten much cheaper. I just found out that my landlord is charging my upstairs neighbors almost double the rent I'm paying. Even though I've been meaning to leave my apartment for years now, I can't afford to now because all the buildings in the area are charging exorbanant rents. And to top it off, my building is a shithole. Why anyone would pay Manhattan prices to live in that shitstack is beyond me.

Has Devin developed a terminal case of, "get off my damn lawn and get a haircut hippie!"?

I agree though. The movie will be very cliched and cut/paste. But, probably profitable as well.

I'm not saying that only the people who've moved here get mugged, you tool. It's just that it's funny to see people not understanding why, when they moved to a cheap loft in Bed-Stuy, that they come home without their shoes everyday. If people did some research and actually checked out the areas they were moving to (instead of looking at the cheaper price tags) that wouldn't happen. Also- so many of the people who're contributing to this are hipsters- and we all know that they have no real feelings or emotions so it's ok to make fun of them.

I'm glad I moved to Astoria, but I'm afraid that this is going to happen over here too. I always used to hang out around here- my family's all from the area. Right now there's a great mix of the old and the new- so while there is a starbucks and some loungy-type places there's still a million ethnic restaurants and I've got my choice of great bakeries, butcher shops, and delis... everything a good half-wop needs.

It's good to see that there's a mix of the old-school and the new that works. I just hope it doesn't flip completely in the coming years... I love that a lot of the people still live here- there's lots of the original Greeks, Italians, Czechs, Brazillians, etc. that built this place up.

Wow, an article nominally about Adam Sandler has generated an interesting discussion. From the flip side of things, I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Since 9-11, there's been a massive influx on New Yorkers and New Jerseyites into the state. As a result, real estate prices have gone through the roof simply because those individuals are able to stretch their salaries that much farther here. Now, Pennsylvanians can't afford housing commiserate with their earnings. The only Pennsylvanians profiting are the real estate developers and land owners. And, as an added bonus, the crime rates are skyrocketing. It really, really sucks.

Being that I live in Brooklyn (Gravesend area), I appreciate Dev's distaste for these pretentious douche-bags who have hijacked the Park Slope, Williamsburg area with their pansy jamba-juiceries.

Oh yeah, and this movie looks and sounds like shit. Kevin James should stay on TV where he belongs, and Sandler should just stay away from all outlets of media all together.

I know all about it... lived in Easton, PA for nearly 30 years before moving down to Orlando last year. You've hit the problem right on the head... Better property tax as well has started a mass in-flux of "others" from the Tri-State area. They are amazed that they can get a home that would cost $500K in NY, for $300K in PA... the shitty thing is, a couple years ago, you could get that same home for $150-200K in PA... Because the NYers & NJians are getting a break in their eyes, they're willing to pay more than the average PAian... thus, inflating the Real Estate market to unaffordable prices for the people who are inhabitants of the area. It's NYC's way of spreading their ridiculous cost of living expectations throughout the Tri-State area. City Mice commuters screwing over the Country Mice survivors...

When are these audiences FINALLY going to stop plunking down money to see him do his same retard-boy schtick? I mean, with some minor exceptions, who's got a more sizzling box office track record than Sandler? STOP THE INSANITY.
