NOTORIOUS - Criterion Edition

Originally released in 2001, it's now out-of-print, but I managed to get a new copy from Amazon via one of their independent warehouses. The image is crisp (new digital transfer to boot) and the audio's superb, as you'd expect from Criterion. NOTORIOUS is one of the richest-looking B&W films I've ever seen, right up there with RAGING BULL and PSYCHO. Every image reflects the artistry and intelligent design of its master. These are the kind of films that make me gawk in awe of their utter filmmaking perfection. I can watch this film without sound. It's just that grand and poetic of a picture.

The commentaries by Marian Keane and especially Rudy Behlmer are informative and fascinating.

I paid more than I usually would for a DVD, but let it be known--NOTORIOUS falls in that elite group where the price on the package is the very last thing that should be a factor of any sort.

I agree with you, the film looks beautiful, one of my favorite Hitchcock films. I got this a few years ago as part of the criterion box set and they all have great quality and I'm glad I have Rebecca, since it is now OOP.

Yeah, REBECCA is M.I.A. Sucks. Same with SPELLBOUND. I might have to track down both of those very soon.

While I'm at it, THE 39 STEPS Criterion Edition is worth owning, too.
