One of my favorite John Voight performances. The ending is one that really stays with you.

Another movie ruined by the always annoying Eric Roberts.

Yeah Voight's performance and charisma carry this film. You're so right about the ending though its really quite unsettling.

Roberts was deservedly nominated for an Oscar for this along with Voight. They're both superb, as is John P. Ryan as the Ahab-like Warden.

Such a fantastic picture, inconcievably from the same eye that bought us Tango & Cash, the same money that brought us countless Cannon atrocities (and confections, admittedly) but also from the same pens that brought us Seven Samurai and Straight Time so I guess it evens out...

I love Trevor Jones' elegiac score too.

This is a real winner, a perfect melding of existential drama and mean thrills.

Though I guess it bears repeating. Many times.

Rebecca De Mornay does well with what she has, too. She really was poised to be the next big thing in the early-to-mid 80s, but it didn't quite seem to happen. Still, she's done some good things since then. I read that she's doing an HBO film or mini-series with Anna Paquin.

I thought it was a pretty good movie: "Here I am, sucka!"

yeah, it's a cool movie. great (if over-the-top) performances all round, including eric roberts, surprisingly.

some of the dialogue is a little too on the nose though...
"you're an animal!"
"no, worse..... human!"

I'm kind of lukewarm towards this one. Generally enjoyed it, but not much has stayed with me, excepting that terrific ending. If I were to randomly come across it one night while flipping channels, I'd probably watch. Other than that, I have no great urge to see it again.

Tiny "Zeus" Lister Jr's very first film.

Trejo's too, IIRC.

Man, how much fruit can one tree bare?

Earns love for Voight's monologue about taking a shitty job cleaning toilets: "And you clean that spot. You clean that spot. Until you get that spot shiny clean." (Extra love for the way he pronounces spot sput.)

Man, there wasn't an inch of the RUNAWAY TRAIN set without teeth marks after Voight, Roberts and the underrated Ryan got through chewing the scenery.

This film is among my top 10 favorites.

IMO, it is John Voight's crowning achievement. The first time I saw it was on cable, & I missed the beginning credits. It took me a while to even realize that "Manny" was John Voight. The character was brilliant & a complete departure for him.

"I'll cross it! I'll CROSS it! I'LL CROSS IT!! . . . . Watch me."
