Professional Printing Question

If you have specialized knowledge of the printing business, please drop me a line. I need to research into the technologies of decal printing, and I don't know where to start.

as a graphic designer I work with many printers on various different projects. I do not however work at a printing company.

What exactly are you trying to do? Just research, or just get a quote on the different types of decals?

Cuz if you are just looking at getting some decals printed, just call your local printer. If you are really interested in getting something made, the reps will go out of there way to show you different types of paper and pricing.

I'm trying to find out if it's possible to create a variety of customized, 1-off decals at a reasonable price point. The idea is to send a digital image to a printer, manufacture one decal of that image, and send the decal to the purchaser.

What kind of equipment would be required? How much would that kind of equipment cost? Who sells it?

Printers with whom I've worked in the past normally deal in the hundreds or thousands of copies. It's the 1-off nature of this project that takes me into uncharted waters. I'm loathe to just walk into the office of some strange printer and start pumping them for information.

Years ago I worked for a sign company (FASTSIGNS) as a production manager/graphic designer. We printed out custom stickers all the time. There may be a minimum price however that may end up being more expensive then getting bulk through a specialist. Wouln't hurt to look into it though. Like I said, it's been years...

I don't know if you are just looking for a one-off decal yourself, or you are thinking about getting into the business. If you just want to order a one-off, check out www. cafepress.com. I made a bumper sticker through them once and it was really easy to do and the cost was reasonable.

I'm thinking about getting into the business, and Cafe Press looks like a high speed, low drag way to make it go. Thanks for the advice, gents!
