Miami Vice on 12/5 - Page 2

My girlfriend bought me the directors edition for Christmas (I was there when she bought it... yay for Christmas!) but when I get some cash I might go out and buy the theatrical cut as well. It's too bad they couldn't put them on the same disc. Though it is Universal so they'll probably do that in a few months or so anyways.

Anyone know if there's an extras on the HD combo dvd?

The version where you buy it.

Watched the unrated, loved it, and based on the amount of pre-release material we saw I'd say there's a 2-disc version in the wings, except for the fact that Mann is one of those directors not hung up on double- or triple-dips.

Nice to have captions so I can finally understand what some of these fuckers are saying.

I don't think the inclusion of the speedboat scene would've helped or hurt the release, but I dug the hell out of it - especially how the camera rose and fell below the waves.

Some of these shots could be framed and put on your wall.

Still a hell of a great film. Between the people who expected to see Don Johnson and PMT and those who expected an MOR summer blockbuster, I have to say I'm happy it's done as well as it's done - the overseas BO has been strong, esp. thanks to Li's presence I expect.

Gotta listen to the commentary, now.

Accidentally picked up the theatrical version instead of the DC at Circuit City on the way home from work. I'm now torn, as I loved the version I saw in theaters, but shit, I need to listen to the Mann's commentary.

Oh well, the fastest double dip in DVD history.

Saw it in theaters, watched the longer cut tonight.
I just fucking love this movie. I need to buy it, because i know I'll want to watch it again soon. There's such a melancholy about the whole film. So much twilight and wind and clouds. The music, even during exciting scenes is somewhat beautiful, when it's not Chris Cornell I mean.
Anyway, the only thing I don't like is that I much prefer the theatrical beginning of the film, rather than this boat version.

I don't have my HD-DVD of this film in front of me to list the extras but I do know that Side A is the HD-DVD Unrated director's cut and side B is the standard DVD of the theatrical cut.

I think that the opening sequence in the Theatrical Cut is one of the best opener's to any film. Ever.

I want to own the "best" version of the movie (all the dvd's in my collection are "special editions", "director's cuts" and "boxed sets") in terms of the cut, the features, and the director/crew/cast supplements.

However, if they changed the beginning to Miami Vice... I haven't seen the theatrical release anywhere on sale. And I would fucking hate to buy both.

Double-dips are the kind of thing that the industry needs to stop doing if they want to curb piracy. I mean goddamn.

You can always fast forward through the 4 minute boat race and go straight to the club stuff that opened the theatrical cut.

Checked out the unrated cut this morning. In terms of the opening I don't really have a strong preference either way. The boat chase helps explain what goes on in the club scene, but for the life of me I can't figure out why some people couldn't grasp what was going on in the club scene.

Seeing it again makes me shake my head at the problems some people had with the film. This sucker is fierce.

Definitely. This is one of the best looking, on a pure aesthetic level, films I've ever seen. The shots of them flying, the shots of Montoya's compound, they're just gorgeous to look at. I don't know if the Earth's sky has ever looked better in a movie.

Is there still no credits at the beginning of the film? Can't really say why, and I know it's completely silly, but one the things I love most about the film is how you only get the title at the end.

After reading this thread, I'm torn. I bought the theatrical version but I haven't opened it yet. Now I'm not sure if I should exchange it for the unrated version. I loved the version I say last summer, it is one of my favorite films of the year, so that's why I got that version.

It's really low of Universal to not have put the two versions in one package.

There are credits during the opening boat race.

I don't really have a strong opinion either way but I prefer the unrated cut by a nose. The added scene involving some flowers that are sent by Montoya is a good addition.

Plus I believe the unrated cut has a Mann commentary while the theatrical disc does not. Mann's commentaries tend to be a bit dry (unless James Caan is in the room) but I'd rather have it than not.

I was able to buy the unrated dvd today, but I also rented OZ season 6, so I'm currently watching that. I'll chime back in with what I think of the film. I didn't get to see it in theaters, so the unrated cut'll be my first viewing.

Well, I got to see the dvd yesterday, and I thought it was a great movie. the music was awesome, and the "real" quality, that Collateral had as well worked even better for Miami Vice. it felt at times, like I was watching a documentary about undercover cops. Another solid Mann film. No complaints here, a great blind buy.

Another admirable thing - he doesn't linger on them or make them the centre of the scene. They're always secondary to what's happening in the scene.

My favourite - where Crockett is looking out over the water in Nicholas' apartment. Very reminiscent of a shot in The Insider.

Watched the director's cut last night, and I have to say that I also prefer the theatrical opening scene in the club: no title cards, no exposition, just dropping you in amongst undercover cops doing their job. I can see how it might be a bit disorienting, but that's part of what I like about it. It grabs you and makes you pay attention while you try and fill in what's going on. Some people just have no tolerance for that, and demand that everything be spelled out for them every step of the way.

The boat sequence was good, of course, but it didn't have the immediate impact of the theatrical version, to me.

I would of just liked the Miami Vice font and then boat race and no names as they mess up the cinematography of the boat rcae which is fing stunning, everything else about the Unrated is great particularly the Diner sequence shows just how great the Trudy/Rico relationship is. The In the Air reinsertion needs to go though, or even better just the beginning of Phil version no words would of been loads better.
