Dexter

Pretty cool show so far on Showtime. Michael C. Hall does a nice job balancing normal with creepy as a forensic cop whose true passion is serial killing. His victims are all criminals who have either baffled the police or gotten off on a technicality.

Good use of flashbacks featuring James Remar as Dexter's adoptive father, who teaches a young Dexter how to channel his murderous tendencies for a useful purpose.

I don't have Showtime, but I saw episode 1 online. I thought it was good, when it hits DVD I'll check the rest of the series out. It's based on a book, so I might actually check that out.

Both books in the series are excellent. Very well written with a lot of dark humor thrown in. I haven't had a chance to see the show yet, but it's starting in about a half an hour and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I'm having a hard time seperating him from his "Six Feet Under" character, but I've liked what I've seen so far. Interesting character and premise, but how many serial killers can you have in one area operating at the same time? Regardless, the Tivo Season pass is staying.

I expected it to be great, considering how fantastic MCH was on SFU.

Will be watching it tonight.

I never watched "Six Feet Under" so I didn't have any expectations when it came to Hall. So far I like how he's handling the character.

Between the Miami setting and the way it's filmed the show looks like it could take place in the same universe as "Nip/Tuck."

I caught the last 20 minutes or so--very weird stuff, but I liked it.

How big a part does his Laboratory play in this series?

You'd be shocked at the difference between the characters from both shows.

I thought this show was really funny. Hall was excellent, as usual. And the return of Julie Benz!

Good question. In the two novels I believe Dexter only kills a total of 4 people, but it looks like they're going to have him doing much more damage on the show. I liked the pilot, but it did take on a much darker tone and threw out a lot of the wit of the books, so that might take some getting used to.
Solid, solid pilot. Very dark humor and plenty of creepiness. I'm hooked for the rest of the season.

Sgt. Doakes was cracking me up.

That guy was pretty funny, I hope they use him more.

Also, 2 more "Oz" alumni are accounted for.

I really dug the first episode.

Well, when he put the slide in the case from his first victim, it looked like it was about 3/4ths full, around 20 or so slides I'd say. I love it when he started investigating the first cut up body and he kept going, why didn't I think of that?

Gotta say the first episode was very, very good. Probably my favorite season premiere of a new show this fall.

I loved Michael C. Hall in Six Feet Under so I'll watch him in anything, and Dexter seems like good fit for him. The scene with teen Dexter and James Remar talking about using Dexter's impulses for good was wonderful. It could've easily been forced but I felt the acting by Remar saved a lot. Hopefully the show catches on with viewers.

Special thanks to Showtime for making their website inaccessible outside the United States. What the hell is up with that? Thankfully Google's cache is working.

Time Warner Cable had a FREE showtime weekend this weekend and I was curious about watching it.

Might check out it before Showtime gets dropped tonight.
I thought the first episode showed more promise than anything. I always hate pilots cause it's like "Hey, here's this character's relation to the main character- and here are potential issues that will pop up later in the series!"

You just know that him and his sergeant are going to bump heads in the future, then realize they're working towards the same goal and work together. Either that or he'll become his foil.

But yeah, it was interesting. I'd catch it again.

Good premiere. Loved the humor. As an avid SFU fan it wasn't hard to disconnect Hall's David from Dexter. The sister was a little annoying... aside from that, no complaints.

Agreed. Not sure where they're going with her, except the obvious route of her being the one who discovers Dexter's real hobbies. There's also an odd sort of sexual tension between the two that's kind of creepy.

Still, bit of a fun little show.
Since she's not his real sister, it wouldn't be too surprising if they went the dating route.

I thought the first ep was a lot better than this one. It seems like the cases and the secondary storylines will bog the show down if they continue to be done so... blandly. Dexter remains very awesome though. I love how awkward he becomes around his girlfriend.
Not bad. I read the first book not too long ago and they follow some events rather closely. Hall does a damn good job. I'm glad they cut out some of the unfunny humor of the book. I just didn't think him constantly referring to himself with aliteration in the book funny. And the end of the book is cock. Hopefully they go a slightly different route. And, to be fair, it's not his real sister. Foster sister. Still, kinda creepy. Just splitting hairs...

Ah, I must have missed this.
I would't be surprised if they didn't mention it in the show. It's mentioned all the damn time in the book...
*waves hand*

Yes, they mentioned it in the pilot. She grew up in the same foster home as he did; it was when they first introduced her wearing her "sex suit."

After two episodes, I think I've found my new favorite show. Michael C. Hall is just sublime and way better here than he ever was on SFU. The only downside is that his character is so fascinating and fun that whenever he's not on screen, the show almost dies.

Ditto. His sis was much easier to swallow in the last 2 episodes, also. My only minor complaint now is how often we have to hear Dexter whine about how disconnected he is... I think we understand and get that?

The best scenes this past week were the ones in the hospital and Dexter's first kill as a teenager. There was even a mini-48 HOURS reunion going on in those hospital scenes.
Dexter getting relationship advice from the serial killer couple he was about to murder was just an prime example of why this show is so great.

DEXTER slices open another season

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Dexter" will be bringing his own brand of justice back to Showtime for another season. The premium cable network said Thursday it ordered a second season of the drama series, which centers on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a likable forensics expert for the Miami Police Department who moonlights as a serial killer.

Production on 12 hourlong episodes is set to begin in the spring, with a premiere date targeted for summer.

In making the announcement, Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt cited critical acclaim and viewership tallies as reasons behind the decision to renew the show.

"'Dexter' is a home run for us, both critically and in popularity -- the show was launched at the height of all the broadcast networks' fall launches and instantly became our highest-rated show," he said. "People seem fascinated by the moral ambiguity of Dexter."

"Dexter's" cumulative viewership tally stands at nearly 2 million viewers a week across all of its runs. The show premiered October 1, drawing 603,000 in its first run at 10 p.m., which made it the second-highest-rated premiere for a one-hour drama on Showtime, behind only "The L Word." "Dexter" will air its season finale December 17.

"Dexter," based on the novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay, also stars Jennifer Carpenter, Lauren Velez, Julie Benz, Erik King, David Zayas and James Remar.
Yea for Michael C. Hall!

He is a tremendous actor and this is one of the best shows on TV right now.

The twist you could see coming from a mile away. My only real problem with it is it makes the sister, who I like, seem kinda of dumb.

You could definitely see it coming but I liked the reveal all the same. I don't think it makes the sister seem all that dumb, she's obviously drawn to killers even if she isn't aware of their tendencies.
It's not really a twist. Who else could it have been?

They introduce the character well into the season, seems like he could be the ice truck killer, begin to heavily hint he is, and then reveal he is. Where's the twist?
Well, I figured it was him. Which makes it disappointing. I guess it would be more of a twist if he wasn't the killer. Still, the show is a lot of fun, so I'm going with it.

True, her brother is one. So, it stand reason she might have a thing for killers.
This show is a big surprise - much better than I expected.

I liked that the reveal of the Ice Truck Killer wasn't used as a big ongoing mystery. Telling us who it is before the other characters realize it gives the story more unique directions it can go. Besides, after seeing how "the Carver" ended up on Nip/Tuck, I'm perfectly happy to skip the "who's the serial killer" game.
I'm still waiting for episode 7 to show up OnDemand. I've been waiting a couple of weeks and it still hasn't shown up... so it skips from 6 to 8...
Hey, whiskaz, don't know if you have Comcast like me, but look harder for episode seven, it was on the next page, with the Dexter extras inexplicably.

Thanks to On Demand, I'm now caught up with this wonderful show. I love it.
I've got Time Warner, and on it they mislabeled Ep. 7 so that it shows up at the end of all of the other Dexter episodes... Most of them are labeled Dexter 02, Dexter 05 etc, but Episode seven is labeled Dexter07, they forgot the space between the two... Took me a few minutes to find it when I was trying to watch it...

I fucking love this show. So much its starting to scare me....

"How did a death turn into a couple's weekend"?

Also, for those complaining about the killer-- There's more to this killer than his face. There's a reason he's messing with dexter, and its good (based on the novel).

Also, for anyone enjoying the show, the second book (Dearly Devoted Dexter) has such a sick, twisted bad guy. I really hope they use him for the second season, and show some of it in gory detail. The bad guy in the second book (highlight for M.O.) cuts off the eyelids and lips of the victims, removes their tongues, then props a mirror up and makes them watch as he dismembers them. And here's the best part-- HE LEAVES THEM ALIVE, mere sacks of meat, literally incapable of communication and forever traumatized from having to watch it happen. It/s friggin' sick. And the book also features Doakes in a more prominent role, interacting with Dexter more, which I liked. There's a good rivalry/chemistry there.

i've been thinking of picking up the book, as i really enjoy the character. would you suggest waiting until the season is over, or is the book different enough that it really doesn't matter.

and if not, would starting on the second book ruin anything in the first?
Reading either of the books would definitely spoil the remainder of the season for you, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I really wanted to love this show because I find the books to be great, but this adaptation just feels so lifeless to me. They've excised too much of Dexter's dry wit and replaced it with standard, dull dialogue. I've decided to stick with the novels and give up on the series.
I know it's not the best written show out there, but God I love watching this thing. I enjoyed the hell out of tonight's episode, and the previews for the final two look like great fun.
I just have to chime in.

During the first several episodes, I have to admit that I would get rather annoyed by the other characters; no longer. Tonight's ep displayed as to why they're important in the Dexter Universe. We see how Dexter behaves and acts around them and then we also see how Deb behaves. And I love that now. Dexter is this uber cynic and his sis is sooooooo the antithesis to that; she's a realist, but also a hopeless romantic.

And the relationship between Dex and Deb seems very real and again, appreciated their interplay in this latest episode. And you all know what? I like Doakes. He's slowly becoming my favorite character (besides Dex).

Glad they got rid of Paul this ep (didn't like that story arch anyways), and what will probably remain as my favorite moment of this series, the expression on Dexter's face after he struck him with a frying pan. That's just about as close to classic moment as you can get.

I think that one of the main reasons this show is such fun to watch is the cast. They're really into this - and I so appreciate it. Plus, it helps that the lot of them came from awesome shows (Six Feet Under, Buffy/Angel, OZ).

Aw, it's crappy that it's down to the final two episodes, but on the other hand, there's another season. Guess it ain't a bad thing to leave us wanting more.

Good stuff tonight. The resolution to the Paul storyline was terrific. I was waiting the whole time for Angel to get iced, hopefully he'll pull through. That guy is a good actor.

Oh yeah, Theo!
