Dexter - Page 2

Finally caught up. OnDemand was mislabled (Dexter07) but it just showed up on the list (after episode 9 aired).

This is definately my favorite show on television right now. I thought MCH was great in Six Feet Under but Krause was always my favorite (despite his character flaws). Dexter has increased my MCH-love 10 fold... he's incredible in this. The frying pan scene was excellent. The way he reacts to Doakes giving him a hard time, his dialogue with the ex-husband Paul... just everything is great and fun to watch. I even look forward to scenes with Masuka.

Looking forward to the last two episodes. Glad to hear the killer's knowledge of Dexter and his past is well-explained (at least in the book). I kinda wish I hadn't watched the trailer for the last 2 episodes (I'd gone into each episode blind before, but watched it as it aired last night and caught the previews for next week). Ah well!

Wonder how long it will take them to realize that Dexter's apartment number is 103. I love that they are tying things to the books but branching out in different ways.

Frying Pan to the head expression was priceless and one of my favorite of the season.

Just when I thought this show couldn't get any better:

Directed by Keith Gordon.

10/3/73 is also the date when Dex's mom was killed.

Didn't notice his apartment number, though.

I am so into this show, it's crazy. Totally riveted.

I don't suppose Showtime is streaming more than the first two episodes anywhere, are they? I liked what I saw but not enough to spring for a full Showtime subscription.
Just got into the show, and this is my favourite horror anything ever. Dexter knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men, and he explains it.

Great finale.

Spoilers:

I sort of figured Rudy had been in the room with Dex when his mom was killed but I didn't really see the brother thing coming until the very last (obvious) second.

What a damn good show... that's all I can really say.

I'll admit it. I didn't see the brother thing coming until they showed the Mom's fingernails, so I wasn't ahead of the curve on that one. Good finale to a good first season, especially the shot of the shoe.

I'm looking forward to a whole season of Dokes being Dexter's shadow.

If they follow the second book, then doakes is a major focus of next season... and the whole book was great, so I hope they do. I think I mentioned this, but the second season's killer is awesome.

I wish I could comment on the twist, but it was spoiled by the book... I got the second book hoping I could anticipate any spoilers and skip them, but ti was like smack dab in the middle of the sentence, and he refered to him as his brother, which is kinda hard to foresee.

I wasn't too fond of the shoe, but I really liked the way they killed rudy, or rather biney. It was good stuff, but the shoe thing was too obvious to be shocking or worthy of the cliffhanger.

Oh, and I really hope they release a soundtrack for this show... good haunting music.

Ditto... the interaction between Dexter and Dokes is always great. It's usually rather light but the last two episodes with the physical contact... good stuff.

after her speech about Dexter needing to open up to her more i was hoping he would find the shoe in the trash as he threw his coffee cup away.

it was a good ending, different from the book, but i thought the series, on a whole, was much better than the book, but i say this after having read the book after seeing the series.
Thought Jennifer Carpenter really gave a great performance in the last episode, by the way. Love the set-up for next season. Lots of stuff circling in on ol' Dex.
Does anyone actually think that shoe is going to damage his relationship with Rita? There are three books (I haven't read'em), it's already written, but it seems to me of all his problems circling about that seems most likely to go in his favor. He's a forensic guy and he cares about her, and it could easily be chocked up to resourceful boyfriend doing something to protect her and the kids, a sign of how far he'll go for her because he "loves" her. An unconventional move, I suppose, but not so crazy to make her run from him, considering everything was falling apart for Rita at the time.

Now that the first season is done, I can say without a doubt that this was the year's best new show. I'm currently hunting down a first-edition hardback of "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" that won't leave me broke.
There's only 2 books and yea, you can probably count on him sliding by ... but I'm sure some tension will come out of the shoe...

Definately the year's best show hands (and feet, and thighs, and heads, and ... ok) down.

Is it hard to find, or even expensive? I have the first edition from 2003 or whenever, but I wouldn't have expected it to be an inflated price in resale.... its not exactly shakespeare.

And maybe its because I read the book after seeing the first few episodes, but I thought the second book was better than the first. I'm eagerly awaiting the third, dexter in the dark, even though the premise sounds like the second book RE; his dark passenger.

... And I'm still waiting for someone to agree the music is great....

I looked on Amazon and the cheapest hardcover is $38 not counting whatever shipping is. I'm gonna check out some used bookstores and hopefully find it for cheap.
Well, I finally got around to watching the first 6 episodes (in less than 24 hours) on Showtime on Demand, despite them being available as they aired.

The show is certianly darker than I was expecting, though I do like the rapport the cast has with each other.

Hall is fantastic as always and Jennifer Carpenter seems to bring the right bit of neglect and neediness to her character. I am truly enjoying James Remar as the father/conscience character.

I hope to finish the first season by week's end.
A friend of mine got a torrent of the first season, so I've been making my way through this show and have been enjoying it so for (I just finished episode 3). I've read a few posts and I think it was Matt who said that Dexter is such a great character that the show comes close to dying when he's not on the screen and I'll second that statement. The guy playing the black officer looks almost identical to Principal Blackman (he even talks like him to) that it's annoying the hell out of me. The sister I'm mixed on as she has her moments, but there's just something about her rubbing me the wrong way. Supporting actors aside, Hall's performance carries the show more than enough and the atmosphere and direction is great as well. Glad to hear it got a season 2.
I agree. Most of the characters are rather annoying with the exception of Dexter. The sister especially got to me in the beginning. After a few episodes or so, she improves. Frankly, I'm just not a fan of her face or her expressions.

Enjoy the rest of the season! It only gets better, really.
Carpenter is a strange actress, but I think she's the best part of the show - other than old Hall. Her scenes with Hall in that final episode are so well acted. Because of his character, Hall has to be a blank slate emotionally, obviously. While Carpenter gets to go overboard with the emotions, which totally make sense for her character - someone who feels she's always been second best at everything, but so determined to prove the world wrong. Such a well-drawn brother sister relationship, I think.

I like most of the supporting cast. How can you not like Doakes? Plus, I always enjoy the scenes with James Remar.
Her scenes with Hall are quite good and I'm all for keeping her around. There's just something strange about her, but I'm sure I can warm up to it as a character trait.

As for Doakes, I'm not joking when I say that I find it creepy just how much he looks and talks like Greg Hollimon (they even have the same mustache for christ sakes.) Perhaps I'll like him in future episodes, but right now he's on my "Oh my god, I don't care" list.
I also stumbled upon Season 1 of Dexter recently. It all started with me following Peter Krause from Sports Night to SFU, and now MCH to Dexter. He carries the show for obvious reasons.

I loved how they wrapped up the Paul storyline only to stupidly unwrap it in the next episode. With the sister, her annoyance with me draws from the manner in which she looks like she's always running out the door with her hat and glove to play in the sandlot with Dexter and his friends. It gets to me.

And with Doakes, let me play the "Do all black people look the same to you?" card. He's 2 ft shorter than Holliman and probably 15 yrs younger. I don't remember Holliman being terribly fit, if I remember correctly he was rather droopy. Other than the skin, lack of cranium hair, and.... wait a minute, what fucking mustache!?

Oh well. This show is very fun to watch. Too bad it's on Showtime.

Well, I'd have agreed earlier but I just found this thread (it only really got going during my holiday hiatus).

What a great first season. The cop drama plots were mostly second-rate, but the performances really made up for it and of course they aren't the, erm, meat of the show. Doakes started to get interesting to me when he got involved in that "who shot first" scenario, but by the end he became my favorite non-title character. I found Deb to be a bit of an odd duck at first as well (in an irritating way), but her importance to the story and Dexter's development made me appreciate her more even if I wasn't terribly concerned for her well-being toward the end. The excellent reflections back on learning and implementing "Harry's Code" were always welcome. The cleverness of events like the therapy sessions and the couples weekend weighed against the horror of the bloodbath room and chainsaw flashbacks combined to make a really terrific show.

Possible favorite line of season one: "This.... might be better".
Well I finally found time to finish season one today and figured I'd throw in some cents.

Fantastic show. It had a great sense of pacing that never dragged anything out longer than it needed to be (I was worried when I figured out that Rudy was the ice truck killer that they'd drag it out for several episodes, but thankfully they revealed it in the same episode).

There were a few times when I found myself growing bored with Dexter's killings, like they were trying to shoehorn it into every episode. They thankfully toned that down as well.

One aspect that grew tiresome though was Rita. I was sad to see this happen as she was one of my fav. characters at the beginning of the season, but once her the love child of Gary Cole and Viggo Mortenson showed up as her ex, her story took a nosedive with her crying to Dexter every episode and only seeming to care about herself. I was hoping that we would find the shoe in the trashcan at the end of the finale (especially with her line "You'd be surprised how at how much truth I can take.")

I made peace with Doakes, but he's still nowhere near my top fav characters that aren't Dexter (I have a soft spot for Masuka and Angel). Morgan also got a lot better and I grew to love her. Her relationship with Dexter was definitely a highlight of the show and one aspect that I hope they keep up with in season 2.

The ice truck storyline took a few hits in places (far too many times the show felt the need to remind us who he was (esp. the nail polish in the drawer)) and became a bit crazy towards the end with him on a boat and then driving around in a car and whatnot. However, they really made up for all of that with the reveal that he was Dexter's brother. Loved that and it made his fascination with Dexter a whole new level of interesting. My only beef is that their time together was far shorter than I would have liked (however, I would've taken an entire episode of those two).

Anyways, great show overall and I'm highly tempted to seek out the book, but at the same time, I really want to stick with the show unspoiled. Does anyone know when the new season starts?
Showtime's website seems to say Dexter season two premieres in October (but nothing more specific. The "Dexter- Preview Second Season" video doesn't really seem to show much new, just a recap of the first season.
Just started watching it, the first episode was pretty great. Cant wait to watch more.
Only just got this in the UK, just greatness. We're on Episode 2 now, and my only coginitive thoughts are thus:

'By fuck this is awesome. This is so awesome. Michael C Hall is awesome. This is so awesome. I <3 Michael C Hall'

And I still think the scenes with his girlfriend (trying to touch her after seeing the body, and his forcefullness in the last episode to make her stop wanting to have sex) are way creepier than the actual killing.

Hall is just incredible in the role, his ability to just turn from being fairly sweet and amiable to being bone marrow chillingly disturbing in a second is incredible.

I'd hate to be working at Showtime right now. The first two episodes of the second season have popped up on the torrent sites.

When does the second season start. Anyone have a firm date?

It's set to come back on September 30th. It'll be paired with Showtime's forgotten series "Brotherhood."

Brotherhood is great, although truly the most humorless show on television.

I watched it, and will continue to watch it, because of Jason Isaacs. Part of me thought he might have a shot at an Emmy nomination which was foolish because not even Michael C. Hall was recognized. Isaacs is fantastic on "Brotherhood." Everyone else is shaky. They try their best with the political aspects of the show but they just don't know how to make that as interesting as they do on "The Wire."

The "forgotten" comment comes from the new Showtime promos I've been seeing where they hype every show except "Brotherhood." But I'm glad it's coming back and will air alongside "Dexter." Should make for quality Sunday night viewing in the fall.

Well thank you for telling me, I watched the first 2 episodes and man they didn't dissapoint. I won't give too much away but the first episode takes place about a month after the last episode. It deals alot with Dexter coming to terms with his brother death and wat until you meet lil chino, Dexer's "mountain" to climb. I just love the direction the show is going in.
Bloody-Disgusting has the season 2 poster up, I like it.

Hey, I was just coming to put up that poster. Isn't it awesome?

Love this show. Love Michael C. Hall (having never watched SIX FEET UNDER, he was an unknown element...and he blew me out of my fuckin' socks). Love the mordant sense of humour, the psychological and emotional insight, the creepy-as-all-hell opening credits. Can't wait for the second season.

And BROTHERHOOD is almost as good. It goes without saying that Isaacs kicks much ass but Jason Clarke matches him punt for punt.

I picked the first season of this up at Best Buy yesterday, and if I can wrench myself away from Bioshock tonight, I'm going to get started on the first few episodes.

And you will be glad you did. It's really some of the bext tv I have seen in a very long time. I actually disagreed with the CHUD review of the Season 1 box set. I feel the Ice Truck Killer reveal is handled well. It's not so much about finding out who it is as it is about Seeing ice truck interact with Dexter once WE know. Theres some great scenes Dexter and ice truck have together. Im glad that the premiere is coming soon but I of course downloaded the first 2 episodes. They were excellent but now that means I gotta wait 2 extra weeks.
I finally caught season one and while I quickly got into it, I didn't really care for the last few episodes. I can't really put my finger on why, I just don't think they were at the same level as the previous episodes.
Just finished S1 as well, Eric, and I agree . . . I still find it absorbing, and look forward to the second season, but it just seemed to fly off the rails.

(POSSIBLE SPOILER)
Granted, it was so Dexter's character could evolve, but I wish Dexter had solved the case without a series of "OH MY GOD I JUST REMEMBERED!" flashbacks in the final episode. I understand the point, just not a fan of the storytelling device.
(END SPOILER)

In spite of that, it's easiliy the best drama Showtime's produced, and Hall is amazing.
It's weird, when I saw that Season 2 poster I didn't realize it was Hall. Maybe because I've never seen him photographed like that or seen him with that facial expression. Admittedly, I got confused.
Just got season one on DVD. Am tearing through disk one now. Great show. I hate to say it, but I love the premise. Dexter's a comic book vigilante with the grandiose moralizing stripped away; kind of like Rorschact, but not as cuddly.

I'm currently juggling the following shows on my Netflix qeueu: Dexter; The Wire: S2; Big Love, and Weeds. Sheesh.

Alright everyone just thought I would bump this up because the series starts brand new tonight.

Good opener. Like the fact that the huge tattooed guy is still out there. Loved the shot of all the bags at the bottom of the ocean floor.

Yeah it was a great shot, but I wonder if it was coincidence or did he actually lay them all out in a row like that.

BTW I love the fact it's supposed to be Miami and yet there's a California Lotto machine in the background of the bowling alley. Greatness!

I felt the last few episodes of the first season were sort of a let down, but the season premier was great. I love that the house of cards Dexter has so finely crafted seems to be tumbling down. I can speak in metaphors just like Dexter.
