Korean Monster Flicks

This sounds really cool:
The Host (Gwoemul)

http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=reviews&id=7771
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468492/

And where the hell's this?:
D-WAR

http://www.creature-corner.com/?type=news&id=1076
http://creature-corner.com/?type=news&id=1218
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372873/
imdb says Nov 06 release in US. Theaters? DVD? I'm betting it'll end up on Sci-Fi along with the other dragon movies of late (DragonStorm, Dragon Dynasty, Dragon Sword AKA George and the Dragon, Dark Kingdom AKA Ring of the Nibelung)

Korea's Reptilian (remake of Yongary) was "eh". Sounds like The Host (Gwoemul) is much better and D-WAR (Dragon Wars) has potential. Hopefully they will be as easily available to US audiences as some of other Korean drama & action movies (Oldboy, Musa, etc.) of the past couple of years.

The Host is a no brainer, gotta see that one.

D-War has been floating around forever it seems like. Money issues I think. Some of the footage makes it look like it going to be a fun ride. Sci-Fi Channel or not, I'm still looking forward to it.

Host remade?

A couple weeks old: http://joblo.com/Host-remade

Personally, I can't wait to see the Korean version (theater or dvd).
I should be seeing The Host in a couple of weeks- I can't wait. We all need more monster movies hitting the big screen.

Nice, you lucky dawg! I'm anxious to hear your opinion/s.

D-WAR recently premiered at the AFM. The early word is less than glowing, but nevertheless appears to be a vast improvement over REPTILIAN (not saying much).

THE HOST is fantastic, btw. As Devin recommended in his review, try to catch this one in theaters when it opens Jan or Feb 2007.

Thanks for the link... some cool pics there.

Not the best review, but those images look pretty sweet to me. I'll watch it for the monster carnage.

anyone ordering the region 3 host dvd coming in Jan?
In my mind right now, I'm honestly toying with the idea that "The Host" is the best movie I've seen all year. And it's been a gnarly year.
It drags a little in the mid-section, so both Pan Labyrinth and Children Of Men best it as an overall picture. They're just tighter. But The Host has some of the best pure cinema of the decade in it, no doubt.

Even Bong himself wanted to tighten it up after Cannes. Why he didn't I couldn't say.

But it is a wonderful picture.

The American release got bumped until some time in March.
Yep, March 9th.

It's really solid: creepy, heart-breaking, and a great monster.

Can't wait to own it.

New D-War trailer! I feel like I saw the whole thing now.

Yeah, I'll be watching this for the dragons and the spectacle... certainly not for Forster's exposition or terrible dialogue delivery.

Confused black man: "What the hell are you talking about?" and "Would someone tell me what the HELL is goin' ON?!?!"

Exactly.

Giant reptiles causing mass destruction and panic. I feel like I've been waiting forever for this thing. I bet that trailer's the only part of the flick that's finished.
Someone should edit all the trailers together, we'd get a nice 20 minute short film out of it, at least.
I really hope D-War is never released and instead we just continue to get a new trailer every year.

Truth. I'll just have to tide myself over with the awesome Classic Media GODZILLA dvds they've been releasing this year. With 2 more out this month (EDIT: tomorrow, 6/5) and later this year: http://www.godzillaondvd.com... followed eventually by Rodan and War of the Gargantuas. Yippee!

C'mon, Korea, get with the program! Well, we do get the Host on dvd this summer finally.

My kaiju blood-lust will be quenched one way or another.

That "trailer" is apparently a montage of promo clips that were shown at a Pusan film festival/market several months back. The offical short teaser (sans dialogue, thank God) is now active at the site, and the longer trailer should emerge soon, as the August 2 Korean release date draws nearer.

Freestyle Releasing is planning to release D-WAR into 1500 US screens in late August, according to Variety Asia.

D-Wars makes me wish midnight shows were still in vogue.

No, no, no, we can't let them do this. The joy of D-Wars is the idea that it will never get released and possibly isn't even an actual full length film. Just a series of endless trailers. They should leave it that way.

Now that is exactly what Reign of Fire should have been. This looks like it could be fun. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed.

Another good poster. Their marketing department kicks all sorts of ass. Can't wait to hear WOM from the Con.

I just came back from seeing this. It's unbelievably, incredibly, astoundingly, awesomely, amazingly ... Fuck, I'm running out of adverbs to describe just how horrible this movie is. It's really just ... I was anticipating some cheese, and it exceeded all expectations.

But it's hilarious. It's so damn funny. If you can enjoy a movie because it's bad, this one is worth seeing. So, so awful.

"Kaiju cheesy BAD" or "Sci-Fi Original BAD"?

Does it atleast deliver on the carnage/destruction like the trailer promises? That's all I need from my rampaging monster flicks.
There's plenty of carnage. In a less hilariously-bad context, it'd probably be pretty dull carnage, but yes, explosions abound, buildings are destroyed. The best line is when a cop sees the big snake dragon coiling his way up the building (just like the poster) and he calls in a "Code 3."

Code 3=Giant Monster Carnage

I'd say there's a fair bit of both, but probably more of the former. "Sci-Fi Original BAD" tends to be just boring to watch, doesn't it? D-War was never boring.

After the movie, before the credits, there's this loooong scroll of text (in Korean, of course). It's not epilogue, it's a letter from the director. Based on the photos which accompany the text, I'd say it's about the hardships-leading-to-triumph story of making D-War, probably with loads of self-fellating over his grand accomplishment. I doubt it'll be included with the North American release, but sweet Christ I hope it is, and translated. I'd go see it again in September in Canada just for that.

As the final text scrolls up, the background displays a picture of the director standing before the Hollywood sign. To which my friend said: "Don't get used to it."
I'd be curious to read that director's message. I loved The Host though. And A Tale of Two Sisters is another great Korean horror film.

It's quite possible that a North American release of D-War will wash away most of the goodwill films like those have earned Korea.
