God damn. I can't wait for this movie. Sweet. Great review, Dev.

The movie is currently at 100% at Rotten Tomatoes with surprisingly few reviews - I know reviews have been popping up everywhere for the last two weeks. I wonder who will be the first person to break the 100% with a rotten review?
if this movie isn't number 1 and making mucho money next weekend, i'll hit someone real hard.

Can't fucking wait.

The New York Times. I bet on it.

Why?

I wanna know who the idiots are that are dismissing his "non-crime" films. Bringing out the Dead, Gangs of NewYork...even Aviator was fantastic.
I love these films and can not wait for Departed to get to screens.

Might I suggest you go punch Dane Cook when he wins the top spot.
For anyone who saw this movie: Did they keep the same ending as Infernal Affairs *SPOILERS*: Killing the good cop and keeping the bad one still in place in the police department *SPOILERS*. If so, great news, as it was my main concern.

I'll have to go see this.

surely you dont want to know this close before you can see it?
Best Scorsese film since Goodfellas? That's some tall praise. Must...see...this... but I have to keep my expectations in check.
I love Infernal Affairs and love Scorese. I didn't see any way for this movie to suck but it's great to get confirmation that it doesn't. I hope I can find time to see this in the theater. Great review, Devin.
I can't believe it's finally coming out. Between this and The Prestige October is looking good.

I am disappointed to learn that Martin Sheen is getting screwed with his screen time. He's a really great actor.
I'm excited to see this...and I love the quote of Devin's they used on Rotten Tomatoes. It's rare you see "fucking awesome" on that site.
I am fully prepared for this to be better than INFERNAL AFFAIRS.
Yeah. I'm actually surprised that Sheen has little to no status in the trailers - there's a very short clip of him behind a desk and that's it. And I thought to myself 'Wait, Sheen's in it too? Wicked'.

The trailers for the film haven't been the best. Not even Scorcese is getting any billing that I've seen or heard. Which is just plain weird.

But yeah, it's my pelicula de numera una this weekend.
You said "wicked." You're probably from New England...

Maybe they're keeping the blling on Scorcese down because it's technically a remake?

Whoever reviews it for Slant Magazine.

I think Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning will actually take #1, to be honest (horror movie + October tends to equal lots of cash, and WB has kind of underpromoted this, one of the biggest sins they've done this year). And the MySpace freaks will come out in droves for Dane Cook. But this will at least be #3. Unless a miracle happens.

Chances are I'll be seeing it tomorrow. Can't wait. A Boston screening of a Marty movie that takes place in Boston? Should be crazy.
I'd like to pretend that the star wattage plus the pedigree of being a Scorsese crime movie would be enough to counter the thousands who are going to waste their lives with TCM: The Beginning (really, why can't they just admit they're re-re-making the same story?), but I'm not hoping too much. It does have the highest screen count of the openers this weekend, so it's got that much going for it.

I've seen tons of commercials for this. Especially during sporting events.

Biggest sin?
great review, sad that all the sensational twists from Infernal will not be so shocking now but the strength of this cast is too irresistable

maybe now Oscar will bow before scorcese, as opposed to him bowing and pleading before THEM which he seemed to do with his last couple, having nicholson aboard can't hurt either if he indeed manages to square the awards ledger with 3/6 Mafia - can't wait
post #30 of 426
Hey cameo where is the screening in Boston? And how were you lucky enough to get a pass?

Metaphor. A little hyperbole. Mostly I'm talking about their marketing of their films this year - when the director of the film you gave the biggest push this year even seems disappointed with your marketing, you've likely messed up. With The Departed, they've done way too little for a Jack Nicholson/Leo DiCaprio/Martin Scorsese crime drama, especially given the prominence of Goodfellas in "mob movie" history. If Coppola made a mob movie today with Paramount, you know Paramount would push it to the moon. It's funny: while I've liked more movies this year that WB put out compared to Fox, Fox has outclassed them in marketing every step of the way. Hell, the trailers for the movies Fox has brought us this year have outclassed almost all the films the film division has put out.

As for getting a pass to a screening, well -- working at the biggest theater in Boston has certain advantages, sometimes.
Quick question for nick or dev or anyone who's seen the movie,

Do you think any its worthy of a best picture/director oscar( I know you love the fountain Dev) , but It seems in your review that is pretty close to that movie also...
"Nicholson plays one scene nonchalantly while covered in someone’s (we never learn whose) blood."

While I was going to see this movie no matter what...that's the sweet icing on the cake right there.

Underpromoted?

What TVs have you been watching?

I can't remember what show it was, but a couple of weeks ago, the network ran an ad for this during every single commercial break.

I've seen ads for this so many times, I know most of the lines and the order of the songs in the trailer.

Maybe you just watch too much TV?
I was exaggerating...

But seriously, considering the star-studded cast and Scorsese's history with the studio, the last thing they would do is underpromote this.

Need an example of a great film distributed by WB that they dropped the ball on... Kiss Kiss Bang Bang will do.
I can not wait to see this movie. Great review Devin it has me even more amped to see it.

The Rotten Tomatoes Ratings make that guy from Village Voice look like a jackass.
Fucking wow. What a fantastic movie.

And I want to see it again just to listen to the sound design, which is honest-to-god brilliant.

Eh, Hoberman's a good writer, and obviously a huge Infernal Affairs fan. I don't agree with him, but the guy's a big-name critic-obviously not out to make a name for himself by being a contrarian on this one movie. He didn't enjoy the movie. Sucks for him, but it hardly makes him a jackass.

EDIT: In reading through a few of the other reviews, this just solidifies my problem with Rotten Tomatoes. David Edelstein has the exact same problems with the film that Hoberman does (though he's a little warmer on Nicholson's performance), but his review gets noted "fresh" where Hoberman's gets noted "rotten." Hoberman is in no way saying that The Departed is a bad movie, just that he had problems with it that stopped it from ranking with Scorsese's best.

I havnt seen a movie promoted as much as Departed since summer. It's been heavily promoted i'd say, whatever new show I watch or football game I see a spot for Departed is shown and like moovy said, it had an hour of promotion during Smith, all they showed was Departed trailers and tv spots.

critics are (or should be) paid to critique a film's quality. whether or not they like the film shouldn't have much to do with it, in my opinion. you don't have to love ballet to recognize and applaud a great production.

That's retarded. Critics (and/or reviewers) are paid to give their opinion.

See, though, that's the thing. A TV spot is not the only way to grab humanity's attention. Sure, football reaches the prime demographic for crime drama/action movies, but at the same time, I haven't seen anything else -- and this is odd, living in Boston and whatnot -- that sells the film. You'd figure this would be on the side of buses and subway trains through this city. The poster holders that litter the streets all over the place would at least have some with Departed in them. I've seen nothing, and as someone that doesn't even watch TV anymore, I don't see WB putting a lot of effort into this coming out through other avenues.

And it turned out good. Damned good. Coke on a whore's ass good.

Well, just got home from the theater. Put together and screened The Departed.

This is Scorsese's best since Goodfellas. Really. Just a fantastic film. Great performances from the entire cast. For a 2 1/2 hour flick, time flies by. Honestly, I can't really think of anything to type now because The Departed is that good. Best movie I've seen all year.
fucking brilliant movie. the changes made from infernal affairs really improved it, too.
i wasnt sold until i noticed your use of bold font. im leaving the house right now. thank you.
Great movie. Really trying not to spoil anything but there's one scene that reminded me of Goodfellas. That's all I'll say until more people check it out.
Amazing. Great performances all around. LOVE Baldwin. Best paced 2+ hour movie I've ever seen.

See it.
