NLDS Game 2: Los Angeles (Maddux 15-14) at N.Y. Mets (Glavine 15-7), 8 p.m. ET (FOX)

The Yankees/Twins dominate the predictions. Yankees 6/17, Twins 7/17.
Only The Dodgers and Mets recieved a vote to win for the NL by the experts.

I'll be rooting for the Dodgers because of Maddux and Nomar. All the NL is on the same level with no Pedro.

The AL is really tough. The Yankees lost the Unit so that evens things up a bit, but they should win. I'd rather see the A's, Tigers, Twins(in that order) make it.

I'll think a Dodgers/Yankees World Series is most probable. Even though Detroit faltered I really think they have a shot. I'm hoping for a Detroit/Dodger World Series.
post #2 of 185
go yankees!!!!
post #3 of 185
I think its gonna be a subway series and unfortunately the Yanks will win in 6. Its too bad Minnesota lost Liriano if they had both him and Santana I think they could have won the AL in a cakewalk.
post #4 of 185
Even with those injuries the Twins have to be feeling good about their chances. Drawing the A's in the opening round is pretty close to having a bye into the LCS.
post #5 of 185
I appreciate the fact that unless you're playing a team from New York, you're not really going to get to watch the playoffs. Way to go schedule deciding jackasses.
post #6 of 185
I see Dodgers/Yankees in the World Series this year.
post #7 of 185
Wow, The first two Oakland/Minnesota games suck for the west coast.
post #8 of 185
10:00 in the fucking morning! Are you kidding me? Ah, the west coasters. Who gives a shit about them anyways?
post #9 of 185
A subway series would be awesome. NYC was one giant party during the last one. Of course, no one outside of NY would care.

I am also rooting for the A's (I was born in San Fran), but yeah, it'll be a miracle if they defeat the Twins.

Me and a coworker are going to have an early lunch and try to catch at least an hour of the game.
post #11 of 185
Oh. And fuck the Yankees. Let's go Dodgers, as no Sox white or red are in it this year.
post #12 of 185
I understand that baseball is usually an afternoon type deal. But come on, it's the playoffs, everyone should be able to enjoy, you know.
post #13 of 185
They generally have games start at 10:00 AM on the west coast, it's just lame that they will involve a west coast team. TV will do anything to keep the New York and L.A. playoff representatives as close to prime time as possible.
post #14 of 185
I'm hoping for Mets/Twins with the Mets taking it all. My original hopes were for 1986 Part II (without the Buckner), but..well...we all know how THAT turned out.
post #15 of 185
Mets Yankees is too easy, but its really hard to argue against either.

Best I can do is if the Twins beat the Atheletics in a short series and they get to throw Santana out there twice against the Yankees early, to go up 3-2 with two to play. If that happens, you'd have to give them a shot, but thats a hell of a lot of ifs.

As for the National League, there isn't a team left in the NL right now with a rotation capable of holding the Met lineup in check, especially without any of them being able to stack lefties against them effectively. So no, the Metropolitans should take the NL even without Pedro, and, sadly, lose to the inevitable winners of the American League pennant...

Unless its neither the Twins nor the Yankees, I think I'd like their chances then.

The Mets have Hernandez and Traschel starting games. What's scary about that?

Dodgers have some good starters. Penny, Lowe and Maddux. Lots of playoff experience there plus really good.

Met fans are acting like this will be a cake walk. I'd much rather have the Dodger starters.

Well Anya I think most Mets fans are pretty optimistic about the NL title anyways because Hernandez is a playoff monster and they are hoping he can be that again. Also in essence the Mets have been without Pedro since June and they still dominated the league. You are correct in saying the Dodgers have a better pitching staff the Mets 1-6 is pretty damn good though. If they get decent pitching at all they should win the NL with relative ease.

I think the Mets can witn it, I just can't get excited by Hernandez and Traschel.

Thats why I have next to no confidence in them winning the World Series, but the National League? Eh, there isn't a rotation out there right now that appears equipped to shut them down, and three righties coming from the Dodgers shouldn't scare the Mets at all with how stacked they are against RHP.

For the Mets to have any shot in the series, they'd have needed vintage Pedro Martinez, and, well... even if he were in the rotation, he wouldn't be that, so I didn't really care one way or the other about him going down.

Of course, I could be severely underestimating the effect a Carlos Beltran at "80%" will have on the Mets lineup.
post #20 of 185
Now that I see the Dodgers so upclose, they kinda scare me. They are similar strengths to the Mets, and they've been looking to peak all year. Also, look at those pitchers. I'm confident, but nervous.

And really, I hate, hate, HATE to say this, but has anyone ever seen a lineup as dangerous as these Yankees?
post #21 of 185
Thats the thing, the Mets can't hope to win a slugfest against the Yankees, and they certainly don't have the rotation to shut them down...

To be perfectly honest, the only two teams out there with the arms to do it are playing each other right now on the left coast. And boy is Zito going to get a big payday coming off of a playoff performance like this.

Johnny Damon leads off, plays center;
Derek Jeter hits second, plays short;
Bobby Abreu hits third, plays right;
Gary Sheffield cleanup, first base;
Jason Giambi five-hole, DH;
A-Rod is the greatest No. 6 hitter of all time, plays third;
Hideki Matsui hits seventh, plays left;
Jorge Posada catches, hits eighth; and
Cano, he of the .340 batting average hits last, plays second.

Anything can happen in baseball – that’s what makes it great – but, I can’t help feeling sorry for Nate Robertson come Tuesday night.
A good majority of us here are rooting against the NY Yankees, but yeeesh, looking at that lineup on paper is just... disheartening. What staff can really hold that in check?

[Edit: And now The Duke may be out of the postseason too, oh how the Metropolitans have fallen.]
post #23 of 185
According to Dan Patrick, El Duque felt a 'twinge' in his calf this afternoon while warming up in the outfield. MRI is scheduled for today.

Mets fans wept.
post #24 of 185
That fucking lineup is stacked. God Damn Yankees.
post #25 of 185
So... I know I haven't paid attention to the American League much this year, but what the hell is going on? This isn't 1993, why is Frank Thomas a beast all of a sudden?

What did Ken Williams do to motivate him to such an extent? Shoot his dog?
post #26 of 185
Thomas has been a fairly decent hitter, even in recent years. He's had some injury problems and his average has declined a lot but he always puts up huge power numbers.
post #27 of 185
I may be going out on a limb here, but I like the Padres in the NL. They're a very good defensive team, have good starters (I think Peavy will rise to the occasion), and have the best bullpen in the NL. And they're healthy. Look at their Runs Allowed compared to the rest of the league. If the old adage of "pitching and defense wins" holds up, they really shouldn't be overlooked.

In the AL, I can't really see anyone beating the Yankees without a pitching collapse on their end. They've got 9 beasts in the batting order. They're my pick to win it all.

Oakland with the win! Whoot!

post #30 of 185
Zito was awesome today. This series has the potential to be the best of all. Shitty news about El Dugue hopefully its nothing serious and bumps him back to game 2 at the most. If not I guess the Mets are gonna need Oliver Perez to pitch like he did in 2004. Thats if he was even named to the playoff roster which I am not even sure if he actually is.
post #31 of 185
Were you really impressed by Barry Zito today? He sure as hell didn't look all that great on the mound, which is an amazing thing considering the line he put up. It felt a lot more like the Twins were bailing him out all day more than anything else.
post #32 of 185
Yes I really was that impressed with him. Yes the Twins gave him alot of help going out of the strike zone but he changed speeds incredibly and alot of the Twins impatience I believe came down to he had them guessing all day long. His curveball is just fantastic he has the biggest hook I have seen in years. LOL lets just say our Mets could use a few performances like that this post season. Hopefully we can sign him when the season ends.
post #33 of 185
The Mets could use anybody at this point, and it also appears as though Oliver Perez is being placed on the postseason roster as we speak. As for Zito, he was missing spots all day, I don't know, I wasn't all that impressed with him, but he did keep his composure... I'll give him that.

And how about this impressive starting rotation:

Game 1 - John Maine
Game 2 - Tom Glavine
Game 3 - Steve Trachsel
Game 4 - Oliver Perez

If I didn't have an absurd confidence in their bats carrying them to the World Series, I'd be panicking right about now.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the A's will take it all. The Yankees are looking pretty hard, but the Big Hurt gave me a premonition.

Williams talked shit about Thomas after Thomas complained about not feeling included in the World Series last year (even though the team had him at every game in the dugout, let him throw out the first pitch at a couple games and gave him a full share of the money). I doubt that motivated him. As paso said, he's had power the last couple years, he just hasn't been able to stay healthy and to keep his trap shut.

Another 2-0 1st round lead for the A's. Will they be able to hold this one and actually win a post-season series???
post #38 of 185
Holy shit anyone see that play in the Mets game brutal baserunning b y the Dodgers. Maine is getting lit up. Looks like the Mets might need atleast 7 or 8 this game.

Missed the game, but damn good news.
post #40 of 185
For some reason I have a good feeling about Tom Glavine going out there tomorrow night, of course, the Dodgers are also throwing some random LHP who'll probably put the Met bats to sleep... so I'm thinking it'll be a wash.

What the hell was Jeff Kent thinking? Is he that slow or did he try and tag up? He's played too long to make that mistake. The Fisk double play at the plate was better.
post #42 of 185
Anya he went back to tag. There was nobody out so I am guessing he totally read it wrong off the back figuring it was an easy catch. Still though he could have at least drifted 20 feet off the bag he still would have had more than enough time to get back and still make it to third and if the ball drops in he scores easily. Drew also made a huge error as well sure he read the play right but you still have to look ahead to see what the guy in front of you is doing. I will take it though that was a huge momemtum swing.

How about Delgado not a bad first game playoff performance for him. In all honesty I feel he has been the key to the Mets success. Yes they are all playing great but he is great protection for Beltran and they cant walk both Delgado and Wright so Wright still sees great pitches following him. He is the power hitter they have been missing for years since Piazza stopped being Piazza. Hopefully Glavine can pitch a gem in Game 2 if they get up 2-0 it should be wrap city.
post #43 of 185
Was sweating bullets all throughout the ninth inning of the mets-dodgers game last night, HUGE METS FAN here, theres a tough road to the World Series with 2 of our top pitchers gone, so I'm pretty skeptical of our chances, just one game at a time boys, one game a time

Smart and Jeff Kent don't usually go hand and hand with one another.

There was a guy I worked with ten years ago who would go absolutely nuts for the first week of the playoffs. He was an actor at one of the shows at Universal, and they had a TV in their green room, so every day when there were two afternoon games, he'd bring in hot dogs and chili and chips and all the fixings and we'd just spend the day grilling and watching baseball. Good times.

Can I take back what I said about the Padres earlier? I can understand getting shut down by Carpenter, but Jeff Weaver?

Well, that just about worked out.

Steve Trachsel (Oliver Perez?) on Saturday will be an adventure, though.
