Who here knows about Acid Rain and Chemical explosions?

Just curious.

Living in Durham, NC to the West of Apex, NC where that BIG ASS chemical explosion evacuated the entire town,
There is talk about a chemical plume/cloud that is moving southwest...

And talk of possible Acid rain.

So anyone have any insight as to what is likely to happen in such a situation. Can other surrounding areas possibly be affected?

Sounds like the first real-world zombie outbreak is about to occur. Now I feel the need to go get that zombie survival guide. Nice knowing you, neaux. Be prepared for lots of shuffling. And strange looks. And possibly shotguns to the face.

It's not funny when a chemical explosion such as that in Bhopal, India, in 1984, can kill 15,000 people.

But it's in India, so it roughly equals 150 Americans...

I'm over in Chapel Hill, and I've been worrying about it too. I think that the rain will work to reduce the gas cloud over Apex, but it's probably going to be at the expense of contaminated rain. Whatever it is that's in the air over Apex is going to get washed into the ground--so we can look for a change in ground water, local reservoirs, etc.

I keep hearing that there's a lot of chlorine stored over there, and chlorine gas was widely used in WWI. I remember from an old military class that the stuff is heavier than normal air, so it will cling to the ground, in valleys, etc. The wind is blowing from the north now, so it will gradually disperse toward the south. How long it will take to dissipate, and how much the rain will speed things up, I couldn't guess. In the meantime, I'm keeping the hell away from Apex.

from what I've heard on G105, it could potentially wind up effecting their water supply as well.

I'm just hoping Durham and Chapel Hill and Raleigh won't suffer the effects.

Its already ruined traffic flow on I-40 causing 2 hour delays.

Prepare yourself by reading Don DeLillo's WHITE NOISE.

Well, I'm heading out to grab a cup of coffee in Durham. Hope the flesh doesn't come streaming off my bones in the contaminated rain.

Speaking of White Noise, isn't somebody filming an adaptation of that?

It's now stopped raining in Cary, but with the current winds it shouldn't matter too much here. All the worst stuff is going sw over Johnston county. No word yet of the estimated value of the improvements.

At least if the water supply becomes tainted there's plenty of water in the surrounding areas. (For those not from there, that was sarcasm - Cary has permanent water restrictions because they can't keep up with demand for water.)

This is from CNN.com:

Investigators "so far, [are] not finding anything alarming in their monitoring data," said Dianna Kees, spokeswoman for the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

"I did have a conversation with officials at the Division of Air Quality about the rain," Mayor Keith Weatherly said. "They were optimistic, and the quote was 'the rain is the best thing that could happen.'"

"It scrubs the air," the mayor said, "That plume that was moving around may not be issue any longer, so that is very good news."

Mentioning the traffic, I noticed traffic on 40 was a bit more backed up than usual, and I'm all the way over in G-boro.

Ahhhhhh... fresh Canadian air....

I googled for you, but the most helpful thing I found was on FEMA's site...if you trust them, go here:

http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/haza...incidents.shtm

...and yes, they mention duct tape.

Drinking bottled water for awhile is an obvious.

well it sounds like there isnt too much of a threat for the surrounding areas anymore. I guess the weather being rainy actually helped dissipate alot of the gas.

Still sucks for those residents of Apex as they arent allowed back into their homes yet.
