I'm not sure what I just saw, but I know that it freaked me out and I dug it like a drill penis. It's what I thought dropping acid would be like.

My buddy after watching this movie now uses the word tetsuo to refer to something as being out of control or insane.

"Man, that girl was tetsuo.

It's that crazy.

I can see that. I started replacing the word "Dumb" with "Project: Metal Beast" after watching that.

Tetsuo and Tetsuo II: Body Hammer are just incredible films, and to be honest they are the most understandable of Tsukamoto's films. Essentially his later work involves a woman with a remote controlled vibrator, and a film about a man obsessed with his girlfriends corpse.

It is an utterly whacky movie, but only visually, the story itself is largely superhero mythos mixed with the Japanese fetishisation of Tech.

I just appreciate the fact that, at 64 minutes, it doesn't overstay it's welcome. I found Eraserhead tiring.

I think if the film had gone on any longer Tsukamoto would have had to import junk from other countries. The sheer amount of scrap metal used in that 60 minutes is incredible. Tetsuo is the sort of film where the more you watch it the more you understand it as the rules of the universe take a little bit of time to sink in.

How low budget a production was it? Because the effects are incredible.
Practically non-existant if I remember the documentary rightly. The OST is provided by a friend, and the actors are Tsukamoto and all of his buddies. I also think they made all the effects themselves.

Number 2 is essentially a remake, in colour, with a budget.

This is the sort of thing that has me excited for film school. I just KNOW I'm going to end up studying this movie like crazy, trying to figure out the effects.

Tetsuo was a film Tsukamoto made while in film school I think, the crew is literally half a dozen people or so. If you've seen Ichi the Killer Tsukamoto appears in that as the hypnotist.

my sister and I had a VHS copy of this years ago that had no subtitles. we had no idea what was going on. she thought that it was gonna be really crazy once she finally got a copy with subtitles, thinking that the dialogue would really add to the insanity. sadly, she was mistaken. still, it's really crazy to watch.

Love this flick(shameless plug!) Still haven't seen the sequel, though.

I was just watching Automatons, and if I'm not right it uses that same pounding industrial music from Tetuso.... one of the things I loved most about that film, actually.

don't forget tokyo fist, tsukamotos best film since tetsuo. try to find it, its definetely the two great films hes made so far. bodyhammer was a dissappointment tho.

EDIT: also kei fujiwaras (the actress who appeared in testsuo) film organ, grotesque and devatstating.

Body Hammer is just bizarre and has way too much going on in the background. I think his most accomplished work since Tetsuo was a Snake of June and Vital. Tokyo Fist is great, but it really needs a context for the time or it comes across as being a little too sleazy.

Why do people always compare these two films? They're nothing alike, besides maybe the fact that they're both black and white and kind of industrial.

Eraserhead is a slow, creepy nightmare...Tetsuo is a ridiculous comedy.

Both are surreal, black and white, industrial nightmares (I got freaked the fuck out, didn't consider Tetsuo to be a comedy at all) that, if they have a point, go way over my head.
