Movies that get you in the mood for Halloween

Part time lurker here (fulltime horror buff, flame if you will), what i want to know is what movies are the ones that get you horror nuts here jazzed up for the big day. For me it takes a combination of graphic ridiculousness and general atmosphere. I'm looking for some kindreds here, so for your beady little eyes heres my list (in no particular order).

Night of the Living Dead: nostalgia gives this one weight for me, it was the first serious horror movie i saw and certainly one of the first movies to grab me by the balls and make me pay attention.

The Fog: for my money nothing beats the ghost story atmosphere of this movie, in fact i'd like to challenge any future horror auteurs to try and outdo this one.

The Shining: for no other reason than its a movie thats glossy and readily rewatchable.

Return of the Living Dead: very graphic, very funny. Great performances from some underrated characters actors (mostly Clu Gulaghers and James Karen).

Hellraiser: man did the sequels miss the point. Scary story about the horrors of family.

There is definetely more in mind, but i'd like to leave it you guys to tell me your picks.

I've got to go with the 1963 version of The Haunting. It's just not a holiday if I'm not watching Claire Bloom slowly descend into obsession and insanity. Dawn of the Dead is another one, as well as Session 9.

For me, it's not a movie. Every year on Halloween (my birthday) I put on my recording of "War of the Worlds" from Orson Welles, turn off the lights and just listen.

Then, after that's done I put on the Jeff Wayne musical version from 1978.

I will second (or third, or fourth, or whatever) Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, The Haunting (1963), and I'll add Suspiria, Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Re-Animator, The Thing (1983), Carnival of Souls (1962), and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

I try to watch each of those movies in the days leading up to the actual holiday, kind of like my own personal "12 Days of Halloween" type thing.

For some reason, round this time, I really like creepy little ghost stories, so I get in the mood for things like Below, Session 9, maybe even 13 Ghosts.

Halloween, Night of the Living Dead, Poltrigeist, and Texas Chainsaw MAssacre. My power quartet. Especially Poltrigeist.

Glad I'm not the only one who loves Session 9. It's one of those great creepy little flicks that has people giving me blank stares when I bring it up in conversation.

There's always The Exorcist, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, The Hills Have Eyes, etc.. 70's horror tends to work best for me around this time of year.

Also, new to my Halloween must-watch list is Slither. Sure it's not "scary", but you've gotta allow some of the dumb-fun horror flicks on Halloween.

Slither is fun, but certainly not dumb. Not to nitpick, but it's an important difference.

I guess I chose my wording poorly. I certainly don't think Slither is "dumb", it's actually rather clever. By "dumb fun" I meant in the B-Movie sense. Slither is, for all intents and purposes, pretty much a B-Movie with its' tongue planted firmly in cheek. Kind of in the Re-Animator and Evil Dead II vein.

Not a movie but the TV Series League of Gentlemen, I begin watching October 1st and finish a couple weeks later. I save the Christmas Special for December of course. For movies it's Halloween and the Disney cartoon Ichabod Crane and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. We used to watch it in school and I remember that feeling of excitement and being a little freaked out.

Ones that come to mind for me include: 'Sleepy Hollow', 'The Thing', 'The Shining', 'The Wicker Man (original)', 'Salem's Lot'.

I love the hell out of Session9. The Machinist is a really great one as well.
