Freakish Russian Boxer to Fight on U.S. Soil...Tonight!

Tonight on HBO WBA champ Nikolai Valuev makes his U.S. debut and defends his title against Monte Barrett. I don't know anything about Barrett but I hope he brings a ladder, and has his affairs in order.

Here's what Don King has to say about Valuev: “He’s the eight wonder of the world. He’s faster than a speeding bullet. He leaped over the Sears Tower in a single stride?. Is he a bird? Is he a plane? He’s Super Nikolai Valuev!”

Holy shit! I'd almost pay to see this, almost. When boxing embraces its ridiculousness will be the time it actually becomes watchable again. Though i do love me some Manny Pacquiao fights.

so this is the real life Ivan Drago...thats why you posted this isn't it molti

Drago was genetically engineered Russian perfection.
This guy is like a shaved Sasquatch.

Still it would be great to see Barrett standing up to Valuev's face, like Apollo did to Drago.

I could take him.

There certainly is a parallel. I'd be worried if Valuev was set to fight a once-great champ trying to prove himself like Holyfield. I'm pretty sure this Barrett guy will walk away with only some mild brain damage.

What's crazy is that all 4 of the current heavyweight champs are from Russia. I don't want these chumps coming over here trying to make us look bad.

valuev isn't a particularly good fighter, and i've yet to see him in a good fight.

But does Monte Barrett feel horny?

Looking at the pictures, it does seem like Primo Carnera all over again. Anyone else seen The Harder They Fall?

well that was a mostly terrible fight, but then again the opening fight left little room to go up on. keep hoping for a decent heavyweight champ, cause none of these guys are it.

I thought the fight was very entertaining. First of all, just looking at Valuev doesn't really get old, he must have the biggest brow ridge in the history of mankind, including cavemen, australepithicus or whatever. Barrett threw his best overhand rights and it was as if absolutely nothing had happened. Valuev throws his straight right like a schoolgirl, leading with the elbow, yet because he is indestructable he still wins. He has no idea how to throw any punch except a jab, he hits people with the laces, hilarious. And he doesn't protect himself either, but he doesn't have to with his cro magnon dome. His George the Animal Steele shoulder and back hair is a nice touch as well. I'll be following this guy's career from here on out.

It was a pretty sloppy fight. Valuev, for all his size, doesn't have much force behind his punches. He seems content with tiring his opponets out as they keep reaching with their punches. That might work on a journeyman like Barrett but he's going to need to develop a killer instinct if he fights someone halfway decent like Klitchko.

That undercard fight was fantastic. Those dudes beat the snot out of each other.

Time for George Foreman to come back out of retirement. Or any other heavyweight with a real, solid, knock-out punch.

Agreed, on both accounts. Interesting thing was Valuev's stamina, he seemed like he could not be hurt and never showed much fatigue through 11 rounds.

The undercard fight kept my attention though, i always love fights like this.

Pretty boring fight but espn.com has a great picture from it:

Three things I like about that picture:

His caveman brow ridge

His sasquatch shoulder hair

How his left wrist is leading the rest of his left forearm showing he has no idea how to throw a punch. He slaps people with the laces. I like the guy, I'd like to see him learn how to throw a punch and dominate.

also, Barret has an expression on his face that makes Mike Tyson look smart.

Also, Barrett going into battle with pink gloves is just not a good look when you're fighting for the heavyweight championship.

He's just that secure in his masculinity I guess, even when his opponent has a higher testosterone count than a silverback gorilla.
