Halloween sound-effect albums...

Do they still make these things?

I'm curious; I lived in the States from '65-'74, and this was one of the cool things to have pumping through your speakers as the T'o'T'ers came around...

Average track was :
"Track 13...BRIDGE FALL
'wind', creaking timbers...out of breath sounds arriving from a distance, and slowing...footsteps tentativly crossing boards...footsteps increase in speed, plank splinters...(STOPS)...wary footsteps...another board splinters..(STOPS)...hasty retreat...more boards disintegrate, ropes snap...ghastly scream plummetting into the abyss...'wind'..."

They used to come on those big black double-sided CDs your parents (or grandparents) might still use.

Anyone remember these?

Oh, they still make them. They aren't anything as sweet as the bridge fall, but they still do them.

They're still around, but I don't know if they still bother to break them up into seperate tracks or not. My friend loaned me one a few years ago that was really terrible(I was looking for interesting sounds to sample). I might look into making one of my own, actually.

Our family had a record of scary sounds we actually picked up from disney world back when i was probably about three. That thing still stands as the best i've ever heard. We used it 'til probably about two years ago (gotta have a record player ta play records).

I see spooky sound-effects tapes and CDs for sale here and there.

I had one of these. Some cool shit on there. Scary footsteps, creaking boards and cats growling. The best one was titled "Aliens eating humans."

I had one too! Mine had an exorcism (a priest crying "The power of Christ compels you!" while the possessed victim groans and howls and growls), pirates keel-hauling a fellow pirate, etc. Great stuff. Gotta see if I can find a good one on eBay.

This sounds like it may be what Graham had. I may have actually had that too (some of the tracks sound very familiar.)

Here is another goldmine of material.

Son of a bitch! I found the album I had as a wee tyke! It's Here , the second-to-last item on the page. Monster Mash Sounds of Terror! It starts witha crappy rendition of Monster Mash, but then has a few tracks of monsters (King Kong, Dracula, Jack the Ripper, Giant Crab (!?!)), and then several tracks of Man's Inhumanity to Man - Keel-Hauled, Buried Alive, Burned at the Stake, Guillotine, etc.

Holy shit, this takes me back, and makes me love my parents all the more for letting me listen to this when I was six years old, and helping to mold me into the perverted, horror-lovin' freak I am today. Thanks, M & P!
