GREAT documentary. You're all going to love this one... it airs next friday.

They sent me the screener in a big ass styrofoam box with fake ice and a "body bag" which had the bloody press release in it. Heh.

Review coming soon...

Nope. No release date yet, but I'll send out some emails and see what I can find out.

It is based on a book, though.

This is tonight! Those of you with Starz- check it out- I think it should be on demand in a few weeks if you miss it. Dvd next year.

Caught this last night and even though I am not a big fan of slasher films (I love Halloween, Friday the 13th) I found this documentary very informative. I like how they framed the different styles of slasher films through the years and how they were a by product of current affairs. My favorite contributor was Savini and I could listen to him for hours on end discussing his career and films in general.

Yes I turned my head a few times but got through the entire show (pats self on the back) all the same.

Enjoyed your review also Alex but correct me if I'm wrong on something you mentioned:

It's not something I can recommend to anyone that's not a fan of the subgenre that Halloween unwittingly spawned.
I thought Psycho and another English film that I can't think of right now were credited for this?

Oh and I still remember the outcry/protests over Silent Night, Deadly Night

It was much better and more thorough than I had thought it would cover. It gave attention to things I remember from my younger days like Sleepaway Camp, Happy Birthday to Me, Prowler, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning and many others that deserve some spotlight if you're going to be delving into this genre. It covered many angles and personalities from the time that I didn't expect and there were lots of fresh stories that I hadn't heard before, which was unexpected. I'd say this is highly recommended for horror fans (especially those that don't read the doc books.)

Very well done; I was impressed by the way the actors/directors/etc defended themselves against the charges of misogyny, which is really a thorny issue for the whole "slasher" genre - I don't think the bulk of the films were any sort of reactionary response to the rise of feminism (I think a few may have had that agenda, however subconsciously) but the practice of putting naked, sexualized women in jeopardy on film isn't exactly empowering.

It's going to be on again on Thursday the 19th & Sunday the 29th early in the morning.

Great show. I remember watching that actual Siskel and Ebert show when it first ran. Even back then I thought they completely overreacted.

You're probably thinking of Michael Powells' PEEPING TOM, which is a truly great film, but also not very representational of modern slasher or stalker films. The more often-cited and stylistically accurate progenitor of the modern slasher seems to be TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE, aka BAY OF BLOOD by Mario Bava.

ED:
Another review mentions that Mario Bava and Dario Argento get about 1 minute total in the doc.
A stupid oversight.

Not to derail, but I just don't get the love for Sleepaway Camp. Yes, the ending was spoiled for me before I saw it, but I bought the box set in good faith (after hearing the hype) and was completely turned off by how fucking boring the series was.

That's it and thank you.

A) I don't get it either; it was plenty boring and

B) THERE'S A FUCKING BOXED SET?! That I can't believe. This was hardly a franachise worthy of boxed set treatment.

LOVE Sleepaway Camp.

Know why I always liked it? It's one of the few "teenagers in peril" slasher flicks that actually has teens and preteeens. That shot at the end of the film fucked up my head when I was a kid.

The sequels were much campier, and the 3rd isn't really worth it except for some nice boob shots, but they're pretty fun.

I've got the boxset, yes.

Hey, didn't know there was a thread for this. Pretty good doc. Haven't even thought about movies like The Prowler and the Burning in ages.

I always liked Sleepaway Camp as well. I don't remember the sequels all that well, but 2 and 3 are playing on Comcast on Demand right now, under the Free Movies, or Fearnet banner.
