I think there's a give and take situation with this, much like in sports memoribilia. If stars sign every thing that comes their way, and then dealers who bring them 50 items to sign immediatly go and stuff them up on e-bay, the only person making money on their autograph is these annoying dealers. If they charge for autographs/photos, then at least they're the ones getting paid, and it stops the dealers who want 50 items signed.
From a fan perspective, I think they should sign one (and only one) item for free, and charge for everything after the first.
