Testament

Anyone out there reading Testament? Is it any good?

Didn't make it past the first issue as its techno-magic/religion thing didn't do much for me.
Vertigo's pretty notorious for dropping any titles that aren't doing well, and though sales aren't always a reliable gage of quality (Outlaw Nation for example was great but cancelled after 18 issues) with vertigo if it's making it to trade and they're still running the series, there must be something to it.

I think the first trade for Testament is out now or out soon.

I actually just quit this series. Maybe if you took "Religion as a World Phenomenon" in college, you'll dig it, but I found it muddled and obtuse. It's clearly trying meld a retelling of the Old Testament with our current political environment. Unfortunately, it lacks the language to convey its meaning and depth. This leads to it becoming a chore.

If you want a good new book, check out American Virgin. I don't care for the art, but it's a consistently entertaining read.

I feel almost the opposite about Virgin, myself. It's just too unrealistic at times (the recent eulogy jumps right to mind) for me, but the interesting, Adam Warren-esque artwork keeps me coming back.

Testament, sadly, does not. I liked the idea, but feel that the execution is almost boring.

As for other recent Vertigo titles:

The Executioners is incredilbly entertaining in a perverse way, but DMZ is by far the best of the "new blood" in my opinion.

Speaking of comics,

Does Marvel have an imprint like DC's Vertigo? I'm collecting alot of books lately after a long hiatus away from the format (the 80's!). I prefer more mature stuff and though I don't mind following a continuing series, I don't want something with crossovers or huge backstories, like Spider-Man, etc...

Thanks for any help guys.

Marvel has, or recently had a MAX line that had some "mature" material. But it was still based on basic superheroe like stuff (the Punisher has a book there, Supreme Power is the ol' Squadron Supreme, War Machine, etc.). I don't know if there is/are any MAX books left.

Well Powers is under Marvel's indie Icon line now, and I fuckin' love that book.

I'm still reading Testament, though maybe not for much longer. I appreciate what Rushkoff is trying to do, but it's not clicking. I think I'm going to hang on for one more story arc, though, as the status quo seems to have been shaken up a bit last issue. Hopefully, that was the point Rushkoff was trying to get to before doing something really daring with the series.

Sneaky Pete, if you're not already reading it, definitely give Wildstorm's Ex Machina a shot (and Vertigo Y: The Last Man too for a double dose of Brian K Vaughn). Also, if it's superheroes you're after, Astro City (most of the stuff is in trades) and Alan Moore's Top Ten are really safe bets.

Thanks for the tips, guys...

Geek: I have been reading Y The Last Man and love it! Ex Machina is also on my radar since it's from the same writer. Thanks for the info...

Just like the "Exterminators", "Testament" is a book that just kind of filtered out of my interest after a few issues. I believe the last time I stuck with a book no matter what was when Jamie Delano was doing "Outlaw Nation", and I didn't give up on that until Vertigo did. Like others here, "DMZ" and "American Virgin" are the only new Vertigo books that I've stuck with thusfar; my love for Azzarello doesn't help "Loveless" work for me at all.

As for MAX, "The Punisher" is currently the only title under that imprint, but starting with Richard Corben's "House of Horrors" mini and the upcoming "Son Satan", Marvel looks to be interested in turning MAX into a place where they can station their horror comics (I think there's an article somewhere about that).

Speaking of horror titles, are there any graphic novels collecting some of the EC titles?
Do a search for "EC Archives" on Amazon. There are some really nice hardcover collections of their old titles.
