I recently read an article in a local newspaper where the writer listed his top 5 horror films and the films he chose seemed too cliche ( I know, crazy, but that's just the way I felt), so I decided to make a list of my own top 10 favorite horror films. (NOTE: These aren't in any particular order.)
1. Nightmare on Elm Street: One of the first films that ever scared me as a small child, this film used to terrify me but once I grew out of the terror I realized that this film is genius and should be seen by all horror fans.
2. Audition: An excellent film from Takashi Miike this movie seems to have a very strong feminist edge and isn't really effective until the last 15 minutes or so but it definitely kicks things up a notch when it reachest that point and everything prior to that is keeping you in suspense on what's going on.
3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2: Much more bizarre and humorous than the first film this movie is a classic for people who love chainsaws, Dennis Hopper, or Dennis Hopper with chainsaws.
4.Hostel: Eli Roth definitely shows that he knows his shit with this little horror movie. Sure, it seems like an average teen movie for the first few minutes but then things begin to change and become more sinister.
5.Dead Alive: One of Peter Jacksons best, this zombie movie definitely pulls no punches and brings that sense of sick twisted humor that Jackson can deliver in any film he makes.
6. Re-Animator: An awesome movie from Stuart Gordon which mixes equal parts horror and dark humor and shows how genuinely creepy Jeffrey Combs can be.
7. Jaws: A movie that really made me want to stay out of the ocean for as long as humanly possible.
8. Creepshow: George Romero and Stephen King, who knew that these two would make such a perfect couple.
9. Poltergeist: Another Tobe Hooper film but clearly it gets the Spielberg treatment, which basically means Spielberg took control of the movie, but still it's an excellent scary movie that strangely enough the whole family can watch, and be scared of.
10. From Dusk til Dawn: A Robert Rodriguez film based off a Quentin Tarantino script, it cannot get any better than this, oh wait it can and that is what Grind House is gonna be.
So thank you for bearing with me for this list and I hope to get some feedback on what you guys thought of it.
