I'm really excited about all the names involved both directing and acting wise. What ones are you looking forward to?
Rob Schmidt kinda sticks out, but otherwise, a fun group. Have they bothered to reach out to Larry Fessenden?
Dante's "The Screwfly Solution" is based on the short story by Raccoona Sheldon. Who names their kid Raccoona? And is she a Furry? Now that's true horror.
Wow. I had no idea they had Dickerson involved. I adore Demon Knight.

But aside from the V Word, there's tons of other great movies.

The Film Festival theatre here in Vancouver actually had a marathon of the first season's films during a couple weeks. I'm surprised they didn't get McKee or Coscorelli again, but that's alright.

demon knight is great. i always wondered why they didn;t make another tales from the crypt movie because bordello of blood was ok too. but if you look at dickerson's body of work, the guys done some good stuff.

I was really letdown by the first run of Masters of Horror. The best of the episodes were merely mediocre.

Yeah, the only episode that I liked was "Dreams in the Witch House". Season 2 does look promising. I'd really like to see "The Washingtonians", cannibal George Washington.

I liked witchouse and mountain road. everyone seemed to love cigarette burns but I thoght it was weak, and I'm a big carpenter fan.

Supernatural raccoon pelts?
Dammit! Now I have to rewrite my formerly "original" script!!!
I thought that season one had a handful of amazing episodes (Carpenter's, Dante's, and Miike's were my personal favorites), some decent episodes, and only a couple bad ones. I appreciate the show even more after attempting to watch Nightmares & Dreamscapes and seeing how terrible a horror anthology series can be.

This year I'm most looking forward to the Carpenter/Perlman and Dante/Sam Hamm team ups.
I'll watch the Carpenter one on the off chance that he'll impress me, but like his episode last year I'll probably just be amazed by how far he has fallen.

I liked some of the flicks Dickerson made back in the day but he sure does stretch the definition of the show's title to its limit. Still, Michael Ironside as a rampaging vampire wll be enough to get me to watch that episode.
Really looking forward to Carpenter's entry. I thought CIGARETTE BURNS was a fine return-to-form for the most part. I don't get Showtime, so I'll probably have to wait for DVD.

Airdate: 11/24/06
"Pro-Life"
Teleplay by Drew McWeeny & Scott Swan
Directed by John Carpenter ("Halloween," "The Thing")
A near-accident on an isolated mountain road lands young Angelique (CAITLIN WACHS) in a nearby women's health clinic. As her fervently anti-abortion father Dwayne (RON PERLMAN) and his well-armed three sons attempt to "liberate" Angelique, she discovers that the only thing more dangerous than her would-be saviors is the demonic seed growing within her. MARK FEUERSTEIN and EMMANUELLE VAUGIER also star.

michael ironside as a raging vampire...to me, that's the whole idea to a series like this. theres so many cool things they could do in a tv show format that studios wouldnt trust as a movie concept. like pelts!

That's being very generous.

The Carpenter episode was the worst thing the man has ever done. So terrible.

The Steven Webber episode was more comedic than anything. The entire season was just off.
I don't get the hate for the more comedic episodes. I think the season works better if you think of it as a Tales From The Crypt type show- there are a few good horror ones out there, anyway.

Loved the first season- with the exception of a few episodes- but I think the good far outnumbered the bad. Except for Chocolate. God that was horrible.
I was hoping for a little more absurdity from Landis' Deerwoman and Dante's Homecoming. They seemed a little tame and not as wacky as I would have expected from these guys. I liked that Deerwoman referenced AMIL and I thought the "What If?" sequences were funny, but I really wanted that hot chick to mutate into something freakier. I thought Homecoming was a pretty good take on the zombie flick.

I'm still making my way through them on dvd and I haven't seen one that I hated yet.

Seen so far:
Dreams in the Witch House (Lovecraft, freaky man-faced rat, and the dude from Dagon)
Cigarette Burns
Deer Woman
Homecoming

The Damned Thing was pretty good. I know it's going to turn a lot of people off, though. Way better than Hooper's Season 1 effort, though... and definitely answers people's wishes for a more straightfoward horror flick. Heaps of gore.

Doing a teleconference with Mick Garris right now- he's promising a much darker season this year...

Full interview. Pretty long, but he's an interesting guy to talk to. New season tonight- I'm interested in what everyone thinks of the first episode...
I don't get any of the premium movie channels, but I'm interested in seeing some of these. The heavy political content turns me off, but otherwise I'm up for it.
I've read a review of the first episode that said it was pretty terrible.
Dunno, Ill reserve judgement until I see it.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the Brad Andersen one. Session9 and Machinist are 2 of my favorite modern "horror" films.

Does that include quality?

Saw Tobe Hooper's entry "Damned Thing" early this morning. Far better than his "Dance of the Dead" from last year. Some nifty gorrific moments, but a plodding pace and a bad ending. Ted Raimi was a side character in it, and was actually pretty good playing totally against his normal goofball nerd type.

I'd give it a fair 6 out of 10.

Ah, subtlety thy name is McWeeny...

It saddens me that the man who made The Thing, Big Trouble in Lttle China and Escape from New York is working with such a horrible screenwriter.

Whew, Tobe Hooper's season premiere was worse than pretty much anything aired last year. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. I wonder why they decided to kick start things with such a shitty hour of television.

it seems like you are dead on about turning people off. looks like a polarizing episode. i havent gotten to see it yet, I'm going to catch in on showtime tonight.

You know what? Go fuck yourself, you hater. You think from an episode summary you know what the film is?

No, I'm basing my judgement on the fact that Cigarette Burns was horrible and showed that subtlty is not one of McWenny's strong points. Constant repitition of the title of the film, imagery of people literally being scarred by the film, and character work from first year screewriting classes (never mind a wild goose chase that ends as unclimactically as anything I've ever seen) all point to someone who is incapable of subtlety. Particularly making a one hour horror show based on a sensitive topic.

I give McWeeny credit for being a helluva critic and probably being a nice guy and a great father/husband but that doesn't mean I think his screenwriting is any good.

Here's the thing, Drew didn't only write this. So anytime you simply go after him it strikes as such. I can't deny I'm familiar with both writers, but that Drew is sole target of scorn makes me feel that it's a hater's affair. I think both Cigarette Burns and Pro-Life are solid pieces of work that show their limitations only in being limited to the hour format and of a limitied budget. When you shoot in Canada for two weeks, the whole globe-surfing affair is going to be limited to people in their rooms talking about stuff. At the same time, I think there are enough interesting ideas in CB to give it the benefit of the budget. They made a movie for movie people, and I think it's pretty damn good for what it is.

I see what you're saying, Andre. I apologize for making it seem like I was just criticizing McWeeny. He has a co-writer and as such his co-writer is as much to blame.

I don't agree with your last line, though. I still think it was a horrible script. It didn't speak to me in any way as someone who works in the industry nor as someone who loves film.

As for the limitations I understand that they exist but that has nothing to do with my problems with the script. They created an unlikable lead, sent him on a wild goose chase inhabited by one dimensional villains, the climax to the chase shoots the whole premise of the show in the foot*, and I found the dialogue to be expository at best, trite and cliche at it's worst.

*How can a film that drives people crazy simply by existing not drive the director's wife crazy while it sits in the room right next door to her?

Edited to add: I will agree that they do present interesting ideas in the script. They may have worked better in a feature but I can only judge what was made and not what could have been made.

I'm with Alex on this episode. I thought it was pretty decent. It kept me interested more than most of the episodes from last season. Some decent ideas, good gore and mostly good performances. Ageement on the ending being a little weak though. Felt like it ran long and some things were cut, much like a few of last years episodes. It's light years better than Hooper's episode last season, that's for sure.

wow, high praise. it's about time there was something Dario related for me to get excited about, can't wait to check this episode out now. does the DVD mention anything they had to cut out for airing? (like that nasty oral scene that's talked about on the Jenifer DVD)

and nice work on the Opera 2 caption!
Bodes well for Third Mother if he's being consistently good.
I like what they're doing with the DVD covers. They look alot better then when they first changed them. I will definetly pick this one up.
Pelts was the best episode of the season. I'll be picking this up this week.
