I recently acquired my first ever apartment, and have spent the past month encamped here. I have the top floor of a three story Victorian house all to myself, so I occupy the high ground: an ideal strategic position. I also have two house plants that live with me, and a new memory foam mattress for sleeping

PS I have a gigantic sofa - coveted by actress Kate Burton - that my mom bought me, and but it is far too big - three of me could comfortably fit stretched out end to end on it.

So I finish my job today before starting a new one in a weeks time.  I'm an IT network consultant and solutions architect, but being in NZ I have to be a little bit of everything (since 97% of all business here is small business), doing printer repairs, fixing "slow" Internet etc.

So this week has been all about saying goodbye to customers and doing responsibilities handovers

As anyone who has worked int he IT industry will know it's extremely rare to even get a "thank you" let alone any kind of meaningful appreciation, so I was gobsmacked when this letter arrived at my work.

Genuinely brought a tear to the eye.

I've always strived to be more than "The IT guy" and to actually develop relationships with my customers so it's incredibly gratifying to get confirmation of that.  I think this is one of my best achievements ever (I can't count the kids as the wife had quite a bit to do with that as well ;p)

Summer 2010 I was a 50-60-pound-overweight, poorly aging stack of goo.

Yesterday I ran the Virginia Tough Mudder, 10 mountain-y miles with 25 bastard obstacles. I wish I was toting ~15-20 lbs less goo up those ski slopes, but by hell I still had some jog in me in the final third and crossed the finish line with no injuries and in pace with most of my start wave. Passed by many, passed a few myself. Great spirit of teamwork and cooperation throughout, and thankfully the weather could not have been better. That was a great day.

Today, there is quite literally not a single 3-square-inch patch of my body that does not hurt. My neck aches with every direction I turn it, my shoulders and back constantly throb, and my legs look like they were assaulted with a cheese grater. One of the toughest decisions of my life has been this afternoon whether to get another beer or remain perfectly still. I'm contemplating tomorrow morning simply calling in dead. But yesterday was worth it.

And, I've successfully shamed several friends into joining me for another one (or two) in 2012.

Trav, that's fantastic. Really. Makes me want to see if I can target a cycling activity next summer for something similar.

Andy/Trav: congrats you guys! Awesome work!

As for me, just wanted to post up the fact my first ever appartment is now mostly furnished too!

EDIT: I got rid of my giant sofa... It was too huge and became oppressive

Not sure if this is an achievement, but in two weeks I'm leaving this little island they call Ireland and moving to Berlin, Germany. Which is going to be a very interesting situation. I will have no job, we'll be living with my in-laws and I don't speak the language. The reason we're doing this is to provide a better living for our daughter. It's all about adapting, right?

I am now a college graduate. Got my Associate's Degree in Psychology. Gotta buy me a frame and hang it on the wall.

I am a grandfather. My genetic material will continue. Long live the Bighead line !!

My stupid book is currently #4 on Kindle's "parody" list! I'm sure it'll only be up that high for a day or two, but given that the book came from tiny publisher and had absolutely zero marketing, I'm pretty proud to be right next to a Max Brooks book, however fleetingly. Skol!

I just saw my "big ex" while running this morning. She left me for someone else a year and a half ago when I was down on my luck. It took me a long time to recover.

Last time I saw her, she left me in shambles. Since then I've been running two to four miles multiple times a week and doing weigh resistance. I revitalized my social life and expanded my circles of friends ten-fold. I have a fucking great job (I'm the creative director for an advertising company), a home I love, a new car, and life is good. I look like -- and am -- a different, better person.

She was driving and came to a dead stop in the middle of the road when she saw me. Can I get a fuck yeah?

fuck ya dude!  FUCK YA

YES!

I hope she rear-ended another car in the process!!!

Making your cunt ex stop dead in her tracks earns a FUCK YEAH from me!

Thanks, folks. I've been feeling like a million bucks all day.

Well done, D.T.  This is an incredibly uplifting thread all around.  Congrats everybody!

I just gained 8 more pounds by scrolling past Wayward's awesome creations!

It's not MY personal achievement, but I have to brag about my boyfriend.  He works for the NC State Bureau of Investigation in the computer forensics division, and he just called to tell me that he's getting a promotion and a raise.  I'm so thrilled for him.  He's brilliant and he works his ass off.

And he's hot.  I mean, REALLY hot.

Our Xmas present to ourselves was a new bed.  That arrived today.  I can't remember the last time I was so excited to go to sleep.  That's the kind of achievement I have for today.

Well, another full year has passed and I have successfully suppressed any and all desires to track any of you down and kill you. It was hard but I did it.

I guess that's progress.

Recently found out a female friend of mine was being abused by her husband. I reported him to the police and had him arrested. Now, because he has a list of prior offenses as long as his arm (guy even beat his own mother, apparently), he's looking at five years in prison.

I felt a great swell of pride last night, knowing that piece of work was sitting in a cell on New Year's and my friend could get a fresh start in 2012.

THANK YOU, on behalf of women everywhere.  Too many people turn a blind eye to abuse or say that it's "not their business".  Way to go and I hope your friend is getting the help that she needs.

Got a new job that requires a ton of travel so I invested in a new car.

It is a 2010 Chevy Cobalt. This is the first new car that I have ever bought from a dealership.

That's awesome, congrats on the job and new car!

(not an achievement yet, but hopefully it will be soon)

My wife and I, after many years of savings and may months in contract jumping through lender hoops, closed on our first house, a nice brownstone in my own beloved Brooklyn.  We moved in about a week and a half ago.  And my kids each get their own room for the first time in their lives!

Never an apartment dweller again.  And, I'm broke.  But happy!

Congrats! I bought my first post-divorce house last year. It's a great (though scary!) experience, and I'm so glad to be out of an apartment.

Hoping your new home generates happy memories and times for a long time to come.

Just won a fairly major (for where I'm at in my career) academic award that I'm not at all allowed to be specific about. But at this point, grad school has gone from a hope to a foregone conclusion.

Week ago today I ran in  my first Music City half-marathon. Running 13.1 by yourself is a lot different than running with 32,000 people. Good times. Next stop 26.2. Hopefully somewhere this fall or winter. In the mean time keep logging miles and loosing pounds.

Just graduated with a master's degree in Library Science.

Now to find a damn professional job...

Likewise. The other day a cashier called the woman in front of me ma'am and didn't do the same for me. It's the little things that make me happy. *Terrified of turning 37 next week*

Funny, my birthday is next week too. I don't feel a day over 28.

Six months since I smoked my last cigarette!! I never thought I would make it this far. I never really had the desire to make it this far either, and that's why I would only stop for a week or two at most and fall back into it. Been smoking since I was fifteen years old.

I guess six months doesn't sound like a whole lot but it feels like a lifetime. The older you get the faster time goes, but it means more while you live it. I can comfortably say the impulse is gone. I owe it to my wonderful girlfriend for finally getting me to shed that one particular self-destructive habit, of many others I might add. She made me want to self-preserve, to last longer, if only to see what she'll accomplish (and how she'll look doing it, hehe) day in and day out. No one really ever brought that out of me before. She's the real deal, and so are you all. It's a nice feeling to wonder what else you might be capable of accomplishing, isn't it?

BSS, that's fantastic. You're literally giving yourself minutes and hours and days back to your life.

And congrats on the great partner you have there. She sounds like a keeper.

Sometime within the next three weeks I become a dad.

BSS, stick with it, the urge comes back occasionally, especially in times of frustration, just remember what it feels like not to need.  Haven't had a smoke in 2 years.  Smoked from 13 to 37.

Congrats again on the little one!  Know what you're getting?

A little girl.  Any day now, due date is May 31st.

Just finished my second novel. I self published the first but I think I'm going to try to go the traditional route this time. Here's to a bunch of query letters and agent chasing. Fingers crossed. If there are two things the army has taught me its discipline and patience, so here's to seeing all those letters and synopsis through.

Got accepted into film school. Gonna be a student again at 40...

Congrats!  MY wife and I recently decided that we're stopping at two.  Huzzah!  Thank freaking god!!!

Kids. I do love mine, but I'd be willing to barter.  What're you offering?

God, I'm hoping we stop at two.  My wife occasionally talks about possibly wanting a third at some point (though not for quite awhile).  It's not that I'm against another one, but the goddamn stress of the first 6 months can be monstrous at times.  Not trying to scare anyone here who wants children, but those of you who already have them know what I'm talking about.

Granted, I'm into the fourth month of our second's life, so my perspective is clouded at the moment.  It also doesn't help that our two kids are only a little over a year apart in age.  I'm sure I'll be more receptive to a potential third little one in a few years.

My wife and I are talking about having our first... so about those first 6 months....
