I'm a guitarist and I just got asked to join & record with an indie band in L.A. this week. For money. I can finally call myself a "professional musician".

Get that baby used to sleeping with the TV on in the background at REGULAR volume.  Trust me.  Not only will it allow you to watch stuff whenever you want, but it will condition said boy or girl to not be startled awake very easy by loud noises............be it the TV, soda cans, packaging, sneezing, coughing, dropping or knocking things over by accident, thunder, animals, loud cars outside, etc.

Swaddling blankets are pretty damn handy too.

Honestly, it's not that bad.  I don't want to freak anyone out.  It CAN get a little stressful from time to time though, especially for the first month or two.

Congratulations!  Sounds like a healthy little girl.  If you ever have any questions or need someone to vent to (trust me, the need occurs sometimes), feel free to hit me up here or on FB.

This is going to sound incredibly insignificant and unimpressive but I just interrupted an act of domestic violence.

I was on my lunch break heading back to work and was stood on one side of a busy street. On the other side a man was holding a woman around the waist shouting at her. It was clear they were a couple of some sort but she was screaming, and I mean screaming. He was shouting "Gimme my forty quid" and she was shouting "Get off me!" then he started head butting her (admittedly not very hard) as she struggled.

Three fucking feet away on the same side of the road about a dozen people were watching as they waited to cross. They weren't all bad though, some of them were shaking their heads in disapproval.

Now I must say this. I am an utter coward. At the first hint of confrontation I crumble. I can't even argue without sweating and shaking. But something just snapped in me. It was more the bystanders than anything. I ran over, very clumsily dodging a car, and shouted "Oi!" He let her go and she ran. He went after her and I stepped in front of him. He pushed me away and starting walking in a different direction. I didn't follow it up because a bit further down the road (they way I had come) was a police van which I assume/hope she approached.

Not particularly exciting and I know it isn't about me but that was my Kick-Ass moment, although I can't imagine them making a film of it.

Nothing insignificant about it. Nothing at all. In fact it's kind of rare putting yourself at risk for the safety of another.

Thank you. It's about as out of character for me as anything I've ever done. I'm not ready to start designing a costume yet, but I suppose it shows that any action (stumbling across a road) can diffuse something unpleasant.

Mike's Pants, I too think it's awesome that you put yourself on the line like that.  The world needs more people like you.  Bravo.

Shameless rep whoring: I finished the Couch to 5K program Saturday. Went from running 0 miles a day to 3 miles a day, looking to up to 4 miles a day in the near future. I really don't feel it will be a stretch. Look and feel great now. Thanks for reading.

I watched my first foreign language film without English subtitles at the weekend. It was Luc Besson's Nikita, which I shamefully hadn't seen before. I've been pretty heavily learning French for the last few months so it was a big deal to be able to watch a whole film and understand it, although I did use French subtitles. I've got Delicatessen and Les Visiteurs to watch next.

I'm really open to any French movie recommendations people may have, although I'm purposefully trying to keep the choices quite simplistic at the moment, no waxing lyrically about the vagaries of life just yet please!

Chalk up City of Lost Children. 'grats by the way, that's fantastic smile.gif

La Haine is pretty special. Also I think I'm the only person in the world who adored Besson's Angel-A

Also, read some Asterix in French too.

Hah, I'm six books into the Asterix series already! I grew up reading them in English so figured I should do the same with French.

I've got a copy of City of Lost Children kicking around somewhere but it was dubbed and didn't have the option of original soundtrack, so that's no good. La Haine is a good shout, I'll order both of them from the French Amazon site. Thanks lads!

Simple? District B13

Sweet, measured, with some slow talkers (and some English in the beginning)? King of Hearts

Even slower talkers and one of the finest movies ever made? Pickpocket (Although it does contain a lot of philosophical contemplation over the vagaries of life, the discourse is achieved mostly through a straightforward analogy.)

So jealous you get to watch them without subtitles!

Well, I have to use the French subtitles for when I get stuck but hopefully soon I can do without!

Thanks for the recommendations, between those three and the ones above I've got a great selection to plough through.

Definitely let me know what you think of King of Hearts and Pickpocket. I often think Pickpocket might be my favorite movie ever.

Pickpocket is great, my favorite Bresson by far, although I probably need to revisit Au Hasard Balthazar.

Fuuuuck. I can't believe I did it.

I just applied for a position writing about movies and TV. I'm so fucking excited and nervous. The tips of my fingers are tingling. I've been thinking about it for years and always chickened out. But today I just did it.

Wish me luck, guys.

Dude, you BELONG in some kind of writing job like that, I'm surprised it took you this long to jump. Normally people on message boards just say this to be nice and they don't really mean it, but honestly I often forget that English isn't even your first language. Best of luck man.

Ran in a 5K race this morning with a time just over 30 minutes. It was a breeze. I'm a runner again.

Thanks for the encouraging words, guys.

Update time. This first attempt didn't amount to much but the die has been cast. Handed my resignation today. I'll stay on for a few days to show everyone the ropes but it's a done deal. No going back now. By the end of the year I'll be either content with my life or destitute.

I watched La Haine and Les Visiteurs over the weekend, both great films and suitably challenging for where I am in my learning.

I now know considerably more French swear words thanks to Cassell and chums! For some reason I thought La Haine was going to be really depressing so I always put off seeing it, so it was a surprise to like the characters as much as I did. Beautifully assured direction for such a young man as well, although he did make me want to beat up policemen (that weirdly realistic torture scene still makes me angry).

Les Visiteurs was just an extremely fun romp, playing like a mash-up of Monty Python and Sam Raimi, with a dollop of French subtext (Vive La Révolution!). The challenge was keeping up with the speed of the delivery of their lines, though it got easier once I got into the rhythm.  Jean Reno and Valerie Lemercier are absolutely perfect in it.

Apologies Bendrix, but the Pickpocket is going to have to wait a while, as the copy I got delivered from France didn't come with any French subtitles.

I just noticed I have become a "Pillar of the community". I genuinely am more interested in these boards than my shitty job so this honestly made my day.

Congratulations, and you did it all while overcoming your geographical limitations, surely the feel-good film of the Summer!

You swine! We're proud but lazy people, so while your dig initially enraged me I'm now completely over it and offer a high five.

Just finished the first draft of a novel I've been working on for three years. 428 pages.

I need me a drink.

Congrats.  I have a stack of ideas that I am mulling over, trying to find one to actually run with for a novel (or novella).

Thank you kindly. Yeah, I'm already mulling over the next one while I edit this. This is actually the second novel I've finished, but the first one was no good at all (beyond being an invaluable learning experience), so I never tried to send it out. This one I'm actually to going to make an attempt to sell, god help me.

Good luck with your efforts. Starting out is always fun, so enjoy!

My girlfriend got confirmation on Wednesday that her recurrence of cancer in 2009 hadn't spread and it looks likely that its not going to - and her (and my own) future is now looking rosy.

I swear if there's anyone who can beat this fucker then it's her.

Stale Elvis, that is awesome news indeed. *Clink* to you both, and wishes for long, happy lives together.

Cheers mate - starting to think we might actually have a future where we're together and living a normal life that others enjoy and take for granted.

Good one, Elvis, that's seriously good news mate!

As for me, found out yesterday that a short film I wrote and edited has been accepted into the New York Shorts film festival. Woo!

Thanks for all the positive feedback.  It's now two weeks.  Ups and downs, but as the saying goes "one day at a time".

I'm finding I'm having to stay busy nearly all the time, and I've thrown myself into, basically swapped my addictions for the addiction of, being healthy.

So eating healthily for the first time ever, doing physical activity (a LOT of swimming) and focussing on the detox.

So far so good.  I just want to stay on the wagon, because this is one of the toughest things I've ever done.  But everyone (me, wife, kids, hell even my work) is benefiting from it, so it's worth it.

Typical Friday for me here - just blocked the bog again.

Steer clear of trap 2 on the middle floor as the water's almost to the top of the bowl.

Managed to survive a whole week working in Liverpool, but just spent half an hour retching outside the office, after what some monster did in the bogs.

Just completed my first writer-for-hire job. It wasn't much, just a couple of press releases, but it's been a while since I've written properly and I'm pleased with the result so it's nice to know I haven't lost the knack.

Congrats! As a communications guy, I know how good it feels when someone's willing to pay for your skill/talent. I'll raise a glass to you tonight, Evi.
