Now, instead of a staggering 6-figure pay cut, I'm looking at a merely breathtaking mid-5-figure pay cut.

My wife, of course, had to go back to work so we could stay in our house. But even that's working out ok - she's making more than I did in my old job (General note, fellas: when your wife says to you, "I want to go to law school," you say, "Great idea!").

I feel so wonderful right now. This is one of those times when a guy says, "Fuck it," picks up the chess board, and tosses all the pieces in the air. Sometimes, it's a disaster. In this case, the pieces came down better in better position than they were in before.

Everything's gonna be all right.
Great news Frank. The DC Chewer community is always around when you're in town with some free time.

Frank, nothing makes me happier than to hear that you are doing great.
Good for you.

Personally, today i went back to the gym after a 2 month hiatus. It was taking it's toll. 10 lbs at least and i felt completely down and without energy. Now i need to shape up quickly and be happier and more active again.
Glad to hear that it all worked out, Frank. Thank the gods it didn't turn out to be a disaster.

Mine = just more lifting shit, back-squatted 405lb. twice last week for a new personal record. I thought I was going to black out on the second rep, but thank god I was high enough on adrenaline to rack it and get away for a breather. I still need to take a max day for deadlifts - I'll probably give that a go either tomorrow or Friday.

And Tati, you're really lucky - at least you're starting out on an exercise regimen lean instead of packing extra poundage from the start. You'll see better results in the long run than you would have before, just make sure you stick to a good diet. If you have any questions, drag up that Gym and Gainers thread that's around here somewhere, and one of us will be happy to throw advice your way. Good luck, and have fun!

Amen to going back to school. And congrats on the new career!

Six years ago Mrs H and I decided to both go back to school. She wanted to be a civil engineer I was going into film editing. We were disgustingly flat broke for two years. One day on the way home from school we filled up with gas and used the coupon to buy tuna and bananas which would be the only food in the house (besides ramen noodles). When we got home that night there was a message from school saying we had both won scholarships. The next day when we picked up our checks (and figuring we each had a 500 dollar scholarship) it turns out that we had received over 3500 dollars in scholarships. The chess pieces may not have always landed better but on occasion Boris Spasky dropped by to help out.

Which leads to my latest achievment. I just finished an ADR session with the incredibly funny and charming Crispin Glover. He may have the reputation of being a weirdo but he's a great guy. Very nice. He signed my copy of Friday the Thirteenth (the only time I have asked for an autograph from an actor in ADR). Decent fella.

Congratulations Frank! Everything is far from secure these days, and it's great that you are able to bounce back and keep your life on an even keel. Good job!

I'm really impressed, Frank. Congrats.

My wife recently landed a great research analyst job here in Albuquerque, so we've both been riding high off of that. Two incomes is set to kick ass, and the job will make her happier. Life is really good for me right now.

Congrats Frank.

As you begin your new career, keep in mind that a little glowing green box is merrily bouncing around behind you.

I have now moved one step upwards in the great ladder of life from a student to unemployed. I just picked up my degree certificate from school and I now have a Bachelor's degree in engineering and no job prospects in sight. I also picked up a bottle of vodka and some orange juice, so I'll probably be pretty drunk tonight.

Got tenure today--huzzah! Let the party begin!

Wow, that's great, Nid! Congratulations!

Cheer up Timo! Enjoy until the next stop.

Congrats to all of you, Frank and Ryan S etc. On Friday, I will depart to start my doctoral studies. This will be a hard month. Perhaps I will be reading some CHUD but no more post for awhile.

First and foremost congrat to all of you!
I finally got rid of my cable yesterday. Not that it was neccessary but it had to go. So no more TV-shows for me. From now on it is just me, this internet-thingie and DVD´s. Hopefully I will manage to squeeze some extra learning time into my day since I don´t have the opportunity to get Lost in front of the TV anymore.
Congratulations, you guys!

That seriously sounds like something that an addict would say at a Lost support group or something.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Started back to classes, but still working on the Olympic lifts - power snatched 135lb. today for a new personal record, though I think my form was off.

Plus I'm working my way over the ass-end of a brief version of the disgusting cold that's been going around, so that could be part of the problem.

If we would only have such institutions I tell you! If only! Then all the flowers would blossom and old people would smell nice.
But as it stands I have to keep addicted to Lost.

After 4.5 years, I have finally graduated from college and I now have a bachelor of information science. And I'm pretty sure I didn't learn a thing.
Congratulations, Andrew. Graduating college is a big step in learning that life doesn't give a shit about you graduating college!

My wonderful airline assigned me to transatlantic 767s out of New York.

Bonjour, Paris!

Hey, I really hate for this thread to devolve into "Nice Things That Happen to Frank," but 2008 is shaping up to be a banner year.

I just learned that I've successfully screened for squadron command.

More guys screen for squadron command than actually get squadrons to command, but I'm going to shave my head and take up cigar smoking all the same.
Frank, that's awesome, congrats! And don't worry about this thread turning into the "Frank Rocks" thread - why shouldn't you? Seriously, with enough crap that goes on in the world, the more good news, the better - this thread isn't nearly as busy as it deserves to be!
I would be a subscriber to any "Good things happen to frank thread"
Congrats Wing Commander!

It was a year long ordeal, but after I submitted a package to higher HQ of the Air Force, I was notified that in September I start training to become a flight engineer on E-3 AWACS. It's about a years worth of school that's academically heavy, not to mention I'll experience how it is to get beat up like a POW for a few days too. The 6 year old in me is thrilled about the chance to wear a flightsuit.

Goody!

But seriously, nice going.

I started a new job today. I previously worked at the Ground Round as a busboy, which was an excellent place to work....if you didn't mind 10 hours a week (I'm working part-time while in school mind you). Now I work at a local grocery store called Miracle Mart, 30 hours a week, much better for my finances.

Although dear sweet Christ, my legs hurt so bad right now. Standing for six hours straight is a whole lot harder than I thought.

Oh, and without benefit of much exercise, I guess I owe it more to eating less, I have lost forty-some pounds since September (some of it was regained and lost again, like I went 260-230-240-225-230-220)

"Get your head out of the clouds pilot! See, I made a flying joke there...go away and read CHUD damnit!"
Squatted 405lb. twice today, ass to grass. My legs still feel like clenched fists. Ideally, the 1RM calculator says I could do 417 for 1 rep, but squatting 1 1/2 of my bodyweight twice is enough for now.

Also, congratulations to Senor Cobretti. May you destroy legions of evildoers with a wave of your pinky.

Congratulations to all of you guys!

Cnogratulations and thanks!

Shen, welcome to the best deal in DoD.

Out of curiosity Frank, what does a squadron commander do in a airline company? I get the point military-wise, but I sure didn't know civilian airlines had squadrons.
Congrats Frank--squadron commanders get to take their plane home too, don't they?

And Jake--you're the man. I just started squatting seriously last fall and I've been proud of my meager gains, but I'd have to get the locker room attendant under the bar with me to squat 405.

Good question. I'm a reservist in the Navy, and flying for an airline is my civilian job. So, I'm now in competition to either command a reserve squadron or mobilize and command an active duty squadron. The former keeps me with my civilian airline most of the time, and the latter forces me to take a 3-yr leave of absence from said airline to return to active duty and serve an executive officer / commanding officer tour.

In short, everyone here should be very, very wary about making Frank angry. He will conduct 3 a.m. flyovers of your house. He'll be laughing and smoking a giant cigar while doing it.

(which is to say, congratulations, Frank!)

I recently quit smoking cold turkey after about 11 years. Was up to about a pack a day during the week and maybe 2 packs a day during the weekend. It's been over a month and still no smoking. I'm really hoping this time is it. I may have a drag off my girl's cig when we're drinking, but I have not bought a pack nor lit up a cig since I quit. I'm pretty proud of myself. The only negative thing so far is the weight gain, but I'm attempting to work our for at least a half hour a day to curb it.

That's damn fantastic news. Speaking as someone who cannot stand the smell of ciggy smoke and as someone whose grandmother is currently struggling with emphysema due to years of smoking, you deserve a fucking medal for being able to stop. Good for you!
Rob, congratulations. As a reformed smoker myself, that's a really really great thing. And please try to resist the urge to mooch a drag from your girlfriend's cigarette - one puff is not only unhealthy, but could be all you need to start up again. Try to do it cold turkey as best as you can.
All this talk makes me want a cigarette. Congrats Rob, on now being uncool.

You'll appreciate your improved lung capacity once Sousaphone Hero is released.
I'm so going to own at that game now! And thanks for the kind words all. Except you Eric. Bastard.

Smoking improved my tuba playing. Not so much the sousaphone marching though.

Quoting myself because I forgot to add - quitting smoking makes you really, really self-righteous. You'll never meet a person more on their high horse about quitting than a reformed smoker. Have fun getting in peoples' faces, being wildly unpopular as you brag about your improved health, and basically becoming a social pariah with whiter teeth and fresher breath.

Love, your fellow healthier asshole,

Lisa

Thirded (fourthed? Fifthed? Eighthed?) on the quitting smoking. I did it cold turkey too and while the bit of weight gain sucked, my biggest problem was finding something to keep my hands busy since they weren't holding cigarettes.

Once you quit, the most depressing realization is how bad smokers smell. I know folks who are the most polite smokers ever and do everything possible to avoid reeking, but you can still smell it.

Oh, and what Lisa said, too. People probably secretly want to put cigarettes out in my eyes or shotgun an entire pack into my mouth because of my smarmy comments to friends who still smoke. They know I'm just fucking around, but it's fun to be a dick. "Hey, let's run to catch the Red Line! Oh wait, you can't. Sad!"

I accepted a job today with one of the city's biggest and oldest companies. It's my first big boy job, and I'll be getting a pretty decent paycheck. I start Wednesday and I'm fucking excited. I even get a window!
