Don't watch this movie after midnight

Seriously, I had to watch two episodes of Project Runway to slow down my heart enough to allow me to sleep.
That movie was stupid and predictable.

And they totally missed their opportunity to use the best tagline ever:

(movie trailer voice)

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

This summer...possession is 9/10ths of the law.
This is the first movie I ever actually fell asleep during in the theater. Excruciatingly dull and boring.
Note that neither Scratch nor Dross will admit to having seen this after midnight, which was yt's point. Wussies.
I have. It was an extended episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims of Possession Unit".
Fuck, it wasn't THAT bad.

Well there you go. Those loud Law and Order scene-changing "CHUNG-CHUNG"s are probably very scary late at night.

This movie blew. Once the girl's body is possesed, it doesn't even touch Pazazu's cruelty and vulgarity. I think she says "screw you" and maybe throws some stuff. Snooore.
I watched it after midnight and even though it got up a good scare or two in a couple of places, the intervening bad courtroom drama deadened any ongoing anxiety.

Plus, watching an incredibly talented cast having to make do with mediocre material is frightening, but not in the good way.

Bad exorcism flick regardless of containing Kinderman's Kin.
Not everyone has the same level of experience with genre films as you do, guys.

I bet some of you weren't too comfortable watching Audition for the first time.

With that said, this film looks like smeg.

It could've been worse. Emily Rose could have had a cadre of crap CGI hyenas ripping small crap CGI children apart for her. Then again, no movie would do that, right? RIGHT? Brrrrrrr, a shiver just ran through me.
All I could think while watching it was that the idiot parents and idiot priest killed a crazy girl.
The based on a true life tale thing is so loosely applied here (the real case happened to a German girl in the 70's and much different then here). Ignoring that this was a very good supernatural thriller. Well acted by Tom Wilkenson and Laura Linney (looking great here btw) and especially the newcomer Jennifer Carpenter as Emily Rose this film is rock solid from top to bottom. Not a total scare fest this film takes its time building its case and then leaving the viewer with a lot to chew on.

Oh, I thought Audition was dull and un-shocking as well...

It's hilarious that so many thought it blew. It scared the *&^% out of me, but I'm not going to argue the whys and wherefores. I couldn't even tell you if I thought it was a good movie or a bad one. Maybe it just comes down to what scares you.

Thanks Dario Delfino for defending me but I'm a lifelong horror fan and have had way higher than average exposure to horror flicks, not just because I'm obsessed with it but because I'm an old timer and have been watching these flicks since I was a kid. And it's not that I haven't seen extreme torture flicks -- I have, from Cannibal Holocaust to Men Behind the Sun to the loathsome Hostel. There's just something that will always be scary to me about a bad guy or guys that you can't see and don't see. And I think this movie did it, maybe even accidentally, who knows.

And I thought I was so clever when I used that line.

Oh, who am I kidding? Twenty thousand people probably made that joke before I did.

Apparently, some family member I've never met is one of the co-writers on this flick. Maybe he'll buy me a car!
Well since this movie creeped YT out I am going to have to watch it. Of course before midnight
post #20 of 34
I watched this after midnight, and it mutated and killed an old lady in a motorized chair. Heed yt's warnings!

And whatever you do, don't get it wet!
Go into this expecting to be scared, you'll walk out very disappointed.

Walk in expecting a well acted, mostly practical examination on mental illness, the existence of God, and how responsible should he and his followers be for earthly affairs, even the freaky ones, and you'll walk out much more satisfied.

You don't need defending, yt. Movie opinions are individual and valid in and of themselves, regardless of what you may hear to the contrary.* I respect your affection for this film even as I can't share it.

*Except in the case of the Prequel Trilogy since Lucas raped my childhood and liking those films makes you a complicit childrapist and I'm only kidding really.
Christopher Young's score on this one is one of the great modern horror scores - up there with Tyler Bates' on the "Dawn" remake and Brian Tyler's on "Frailty."

Jeffrey's neck tattoo didn't keep you up? It's like the Emily Rose of neck tattoos.

ps. Uli wuz robbed.
I'll stick up for you, YT. I knew what it was before watching, thought it was effective, and wasn't disappointed. It worked for me.

Thank you for that. My brain couldn't come up with a joke about the thread title's movie connection last night.

Yep. The judges were never about Uli, so when she totally ramped it up at the end, they didn't know what to do. They just were never aboard the Uli train, for some reason. Why they were about Jeffrey, though, I do not know. His shit is Whitesnake videoish. Not even Coverdale-Page era. WHITESNAKE. Tawny Kitaen clothes.

Upside: at least the bubble shorts didn't happen.
A decent true-to-life adaption of the actual case this movie was loosely based upon might be a bit more worthwhile than the movie itself, if its as bad as you guys say. Myself? I haven't seen it yet, but am very much aware of the original story.
I didn't think it was bad. I actually thought it was kind of creepy, but lawyer was annoying. She had a huge attitude for no reason.
Thought this was worth it for Jennifer Carpenter's performance as Emily Rose. Think that girl has some chops. Some fairly creepy stuff tossed into a lot of trial drama. At least Linney and Scott kept the trail stuff somewhat lively. yt was right about the post-midnight viewing warning. I did not have fun dreams.
