Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms

Pretty fun little flick. I think people are really going to dig this one- it does feel a little more like the comic than the movie did- although it's really action oriented. Just Hellboy on a quest destroying Japansese monsters, one after the other.

I'd like to see more of these....

Awesome... where'd you catch it? DVD?

I got a screener. It's premiering on the Cartoon network next saturday- October 28, at 9:30. No idea when it's hitting dvd yet, but it's one I'd like to have in my collection. Just a fun flick. Plus, you get to finally see Hellboy dueling it out with monsters twice his size.

Japanese monsters. This does sound intriguing. As long as we're talking about the folklore-ish, old world kind, not like... Godzilla and shit.

Yeah, I'd rather see him try to topple some Collossi than do a normal, run-of-the-mill thunderlizard. Unless it was Fin Fang Foom and written by Warren Ellis.

Very deeply rooted in Japanese mythology. The Sword of Storms is a sword that was used to slay the Gods of Thunder and Lightning.

I won't even try to pretend I know all of the creatures that are in the movie, but a lot I've recognized from some Japanese stories- like the demons that detach their heads from their bodies and fly around eating people.

And of course there are some Lovecraftian beasties as well.

Yokai style? Hellboy run into a Kappa?

Good news. Can't wait to see it.

Okay, this sounds Triple-Platinum-Awesome then.

Definitely Yokai style- that fox-creature shows up, lots of other demons.

I'll try and get screencaps of some of the better ones for the review.

Oh, and the voice acting is awesome. Wouldn't expect any less from Ron Perlman, though.

I've been looking forward to this for a while. I'm glad to hear the first one turned out well, and I can't wait to see it.

I know they're working on a second one of these, which is great news. I really hope they turn out to be a semi-regular thing.

I really like the art style from the previews. Reminds me of the Atlantis movie.

There's a pretty thorough blog traking the making of these two cartoons.

I'm hoping it's good. Some of the animation looks a little so-so, but I guess for some reason I was dreaming of Disney quality.

Official site indicates is that the DVD will be out Feb 6, 2007.

The site uses the movie music (I imagine the cartoon uses the themes?) and the actors do the voices... I'm liking the continuity.

I couldn't get the trailer to work. Bummer. ;_;

Blood and Iron sounds cool as well.

I have to assume that you are aware of Mignola's work on that film, but to those who are not in the know he was a key character designer.

He did the character design in that movie? I thought he just did the backgrounds.

Great review. How long is this film? 90 minutes?
Great review Alex. I will have to tape this on Saturday because we're doing all of our Halloween festivities that night, but Sunday morning is going to be spent the Big Red!

Oops.... probably should have mentioned that. 1 hour and 18 minutes.

It is a very busy night for most people- I'd imagine they'd have a lot more people checking out the dvd.
Good review, I'll probably be catching it Saturday.

i am so pumped for this thing tonight. and i liked those ultimate avengers movies. if this hellboy movie is geared the slightest bit toward an older crowd than those, it could be really cool...it will be cool even if it isn't. with the talk about the universal monsters and such, there are so many cool animated features they could do with hb.

Well, it says this on his imdb page, but I don't have it on DVD to scour the credits:

The Leviathan screamed Mignola, so I can see how he was involved.
Well, I thought it was very good, and I will be picking up the DVD when it is released. Can't wait to see the next one.

I liked it. I was just happy as hell to hear most of the original actors from the film doing the VA work (though the new Abe was still good).

Had some pretty funny moments. Maybe I'm just weird, but I got a kick out of the Disney Beauty & the Beast parody.

I didn't love it, but it was enjoyable enough and did keep the Hellboy spirit in tact. My biggest issue with both this and the Ultimate Avengers movies is that they play like one long action sequence. When there's that much action I tend to zone out and lose interest, so I hope the next movie has a bit more meat to it.

I like it was pretty cool. I also enjoyed the part where they mention all of Hellboys dissapearances. It really did feel more like the comic.

Darnit, I want this.
Any word on a UK release?
