The Hidden (1987)

Found this for 4.88 on DVD at my local evil Wal-Mart.

The opening with the metal music blasting while the guy controlled by the alien drives a beautiful black ferrari to it's untimely death. Some staged action and fun performances by Kyle MacLachlan and Michael Nouri. One of the greats to the thriller genre. A hit in it's day, it spawned the odd spat of cop/sci-fi thrillers, some good, some bad, Alien Nation being the most known, the tv series Something is Out There and the goofy Dolph/Benben teamup, I Come in Peace. which of course had the classic exchange.

Bad alien: I come in peace.
Jack Caine: But you go in pieces, asshole.

The director showed promise, but it quickly went away. His last big deal job was on the Tremors tv series.

How's the actual DVD?
I haven't seen the Hidden since I was maybe 10 or 12 or so(busy discovering stuff like this and the Toxic Avenger though the wonders of HBO at a friend's house), but I remember really liking it. I don't remember too much, but even if it's nolstalgia fucking with me, I think $4.88 sounds fair.

The DVD is fine. A few extras, basically all the stuff that was on the Laserdisc.

Nothing fancy and worth the $4.88 even if you end up hating it, which I doubt you will. It's a fun flick.

I've often wondered why no one has a Kyle-MacLachlan-with-a-flamethrower avatar.

And as far as Sholder is concerned, "Alone in the Dark" is kind of fun, but nothing beats "Renegades." I just got in a fight with a friend over whether you should call that a Kiefer-movie or a Lou Diamond-movie. I fell on the side of if Lou Diamond's in it, it's always a Lou Diamond-movie, even "Courage Under Fire."

It's right up there for me with ROBOCOP, THEY LIVE, and yes, I COME IN PEACE in terms of brilliantly mixing sci-fi, action, and a wicked sense of humor. Maclachlan and Nouri are great but Ed O'Ross steals the show anytime he pops up.

As for Sholder, I gotta part comapny with SJR on the RENEGADES affection. I expected more from a movie pairing the two most righteous Young Guns.

Always dug The Hidden. I remember reading somewhere that whats his name used it as an inspiration for The X-Files.

One of the best action/scifi mixes ever made- I really do love this film.

Love this film. Way better than a Lethal-Weapon-with-aliens has any right being.

Also love it. Use to rent it all the time when I was in junior high.

Great use of real heavy metal in a time dominated by hair metal. It reminds me of The River's Edge in this respect.

Peppered with odd bits, such as the alien characters continually being fascinated with the relflection of their host bodies in mirrors.

Quotable, due to that one guy's performance especially-- "I want the car. I need the keys" and "I want to be president" are my favorites.

Claudia Christian gets shot like 20 times in a tiny, slinky dress, and does not once get hit in exposed flesh, LOL.

Killer ending-- don't read this if you haven't seen it-- good guy cop dies but good guy alien takes his body, all is well, but his daughter somehow knows-- freaky.

And it got a thumbs up from Ebert (Siskell too, if I remember correctly) upon release, which is what initially sparked my interest.

The Hidden is an underrated B-movie classic. I first caught it when I was 6, and I got it on tape back in '98. I upgraded to the dvd last December, and it never fails to entertain. Chris Mulkey's opening shootout, and Ed O'Ross' are great, and Claudia Christian is the real scene stealer. It was also cool to see Danny Trejo in a cameo in the jail. "Hey hippy, what kind of dude are you?" Great line.

The sequel wasn't much though. Quite the letdown. It could definitely have been better.

Amen. This is the Dolph movie everybody needs to own. Interesting thing, however, the last time it was in circulation on the Starz movie channels it was oddly showing with the new title Dark Angel.

You can get a Region 2 DVD with the film under that title, as I have been tempted to do. It's just not the same.

That film has always been known as "Dark Angel" to me - that's what it was called on release here. When I discovered it was known as "I Come In Peace" in the US, I found that to be just as crappy a title as you probably find "Dark Angel" . . .

I guess if there's any benefit to calling it "I Come In Peace", it's that after your idiot friend who never bothered to learn how to spell properly copies the rental tape, you won't spend the next several years of your life asking him exactly what a "dark angle" is.

"I Come In Peace" is not a crappy title.

Yeah, I Come in Peace is such a better title. It fits within the story and sets up Dolph's big one liner at the end. Dark Angel is a shitty TV show starring Jessica Alba.

I read that it was released as DARK ANGEL overseas but as I COME IN PEACE in North America because there was already an older movie named DARK ANGEL. Though that never made a lot of sense because there are all sorts of films that have the same title. Whatever the reason, I'm glad they went with PEACE here. It fits with the dialogue in the film and it feels like a throwback to sci-fi movies of the 50's.

It's too bad there really aren't movies like THE HIDDEN or I COME IN PEACE that get released these days. Most sci-fi movies now have huge budgets but what they may have in polished effects they lack in charming quirkiness.

I've only seen the trailer for this, but it looks amazing. Besides STONE COLD, this is my most anticipated DVD.

If they do have cheap budgets its the shit that airs on Sci-Fi which is utter crap. The effects are too good to laugh at, but not good enough to be impressive.

Movies like this are from a bygone era. Everything now looks too polished.

Yeah, I love this film as well. One of my favorite parts is when the alien's taken over the old dude's body and goes cruising in his ferrari. He then does this pointed salute at some hot girls walking by, which one of them replies by screaming: "Fuck Off !"

And the part where he has the intestinal distress in the restaurant is great too.

Does anyone have a clip of the final sequence with Kyle McLachlen blasting the alien away with his Flame-thrower?

I loved I Come In Peace better though. Dolph was incredible!
