Day of the Dead remake official thread

Thread Starter
Thought I'd start this up rather that drudging up that infamous Giant Baba/Headless Fett thread.

The trailer has just hit- and I'm interested in what people think.

Also, what's up with the poster? Did someone just photoshop the Land of the Dead dvd?
While it's not cinematic gold, I enjoy the Dawn remake as well - and I'll check out this remake.

However, alex is dead on, WTF is up with the poster? It's almost exactly like Land. They had a chance to make a cool, new design, and instead took some paper, took a shit on it, smeared it around, and sent it to Kinkos. Boo to you, studio.
I don't want to say... don't want to judge before I see more of the film... but that looks terrible. The sinking feeling that developed as I watched the trailer was fully solidified by Nick Cannon doing his best Will Smith imitation: "It's a bad day to be a zombie!" Um, okay.

Edit: I'll also chime in with the Dawn remake love, especially the first 15 minutes or so.
You know, I really liked the remake of DOTD. I love the originals as well. But that trailer was shit. Not buying Mena Suvari as a Corporal. Nick Cannon annoys the shit out of me, and why even call it Day of the Dead? Nothing in that trailer looked remotely interesting.
I dont want to be a hater, but the trailer was awful. really really bad.
yuck, yuck, yuck. why is it called "day of the dead" again? IT TAKES PLACE AT NIGHT, and has (at least from the trailer) nothing to do with the original. i'd like to think i'm "disappointed", but i knew it was gonna suck from the announcements of suvari and cannon.
Is this offficially a sequel to the DAWN remake? Or is it simply a stand alone remake of the original sequel to DAWN?

Unofficially? This looks pretty lame.
Before now, I've never hoped a film would die prematurely due to production problems for the good of the genre. Goodbye, zombie renaissance! See you in another 20 years! This looks almost as bad as Day of the Dead 2: Contagium.
That poster sucks. This looks like DTV quality.
The goddamned MOVIE looks DTV quality... I can see it now...

"Next week, the WORLD PREMIERE of the Sci-Fi Original Movie- Day of the Dead".
Ouch, that doesn't look good in any way.

Casting Mena Suvari in the military is almost as good as casting Jessica Alba as a scientist. Looks like a fumbled opportunity, and I'd be shocked if it makes it to the cinema.

Even Ian McNeice's third jowel to the left can't save this.

According to the site: "The remake of the classic horror film by George Romero."

I guess it features Ving's cop-character's twin brother from the Dawn remake though.

Universal backed up the Dawn remake (atleast distribution-wise). No love from a major studio on this one?

Judging from the Nu Image resume, they're responsible for many DTV features (including some Sc-Fi "originals").

its looks like it was made on a mac, which has alot more personality that a pc. so maybe it will be good.

Wow. This is going to be a piece of shit. Did my eyes decieve me or did one of those zombies run up the side of a wall like those parkour guys in Banlieue 13?

Not only do zombies still run but now they are good athletes to boot...

*shakes head*
Holy shit.

More putrid than I could've imagined.
pretty sure they just pulled it. getting a 404 now.

I know this some age old internet debate, but we have stop thinking that zombies can only move slow. In the "classic" films, yes they did, but it's okay to let someone alter the living dead.

In new incarnations, in new films - it's okay that they move fast. Ohh, and if one person come in here and try the scientific approach, about how rotting bones and flesh could only move a certain way - I'm going to have use the scientific response of the dead don't actually come back to life.

Don't get me wrong, it (the trailer) does look bad. Plus, it should not be called a Day of the Dead remake, because it seems to bear little resemblance. It should be Brunch of the Dead or something, and just called a remake to the remake of Dawn.

But, zombies are allowed to move fast. It's okay. Get over your child raping by Lucas and your flames on Optimus Prime and accept a new genre of zombies.
This looks horrible, I'm guessing it will premire on the Sci Fi Channel after a back to back showing of either House of the Dead & House of the Dead 2 or Return of the Living Dead 4 & 5. Plus I think this is from the same studio that brought us Day of the Dead 2: Contagium, so there you go.

Actually, old zombies were allowed to move fast. 1985's "Return of the Living Dead" had them running, and even talking ("Send More Cops..."). This was released about the same time as the original "Day of the Dead".

Let's move past the whole speed O' zombies debate and bitch about the film just plain looking bad. If you must bitch about zombie speed, than you'll be required to execute a meltdown of Giant Baba proportions.
A pretty damn good contender for the "worst trailer of the year" award. Ugh.
*vomit*

And I got a 404, too. I would like to thank (or punish) whomever uploaded it to YouTube.
Forget the total disregard for Romero's Day of the Dead and any issues with the obvious lack of anything resembling the original.

This just looks flat-out bad.
"ROTLD" is NOT considered "old zombies"- its a ripoff moneymaking offshoot.

It's not a sequel to the DOTD remake -- it's a standalone remake. Ving doesn't play the brother of his Dawn charachter, it's just stunt casting.

And yes, it looks bad....

It's not Romero, but it was actually a pretty entertaining half serious/half whimisical take on the NOTLD series. It sits pretty comfortably with other 80's camp horror films like "Night of the Creeps" and "Critters". And It's far more homage than Rip-off. "NIght of the Living Dead" is actually mentioned in it, and serves as the film's major plot device.

And since when is 1985 not "old zombies" in terms of zombie films? Do I sense another Romero purist (i.e. humorless fanboy ala Giant Baba) in our midst?
No. I don't take myself nearly as seriously. Just don't like seeing the "Return" movies mentioned in the same breath as Romero's. As for the "Night" mention in it, you can thank good ol' John Russo, who had to make his own zombie movie cause he didn't feel like he was getting enough money from Night.
This is ridiculous - just saw the trailer!!!

WTF was that?

1. Mena Suvari? I can stratch my believability, but thats too far fishface!

2. Ving, Ving, Ving - it woulda been nice if it was DOTD Vins bro (they coulda snuck some LOTD characters in and made a cool bridge between movies). But having Ving in there just signposts a better film (thats right, the remake).

3. Staggery zombies, logical. Runny zombies, scarier. Stumbly zombies?...poor, poor, poor.

4. I'd would like to see acting in the final film, was there a director there at all?

5. The whole thing looks so cheap and tacky which, although its my taste in women, I will not accept from films. Couldnt they send Suvari out blowing to raise funds for a camera and some lenses?

6. The editing of the trailer. Seriously watch the trailer for DOTD or 28 Days later, there is dread - suspense, shocks. This trailer looks like it was edited in 1986!!! If it werent for the recognisable faces (both of 'em) - I would think this was made two decades ago.

WTF were they thinking. Ive seen some shocking zombie filsm i my time, but Im going to have to avoid this one....well, at least illegally download it and watch it while drunk....

Hey, leave Lake Placid outta this. ;_;
Alright, I will admit that Placid had its moments, but more in the vein of comedy than horror. Hardly proper chops. Besides, this still looks terrible.
*cries*

To me, the speed of a zombie is a very important part. I'd much rather see survivors try to flee large masses of slow zombies like a giant fleshy maze rather than run around frantically trying to avoid Olympic dead things.

Slow zombies also allow for character to become over confident, fuck up, and die.
So long as it's got that hands-through-the-wall scene. That was gooooooood.

It's called Day of the Dead because the three original films have a chronological order: Night, Dawn, Day. Also the titles can be thought of in terms of zombie plague begins (Night); zombies start to take over (Dawn); zombies have taken over (Day); zombies are fucking EVERYWHERE (Land).

Interestingly, the title of the new film also fits the chronological pattern: zombies get famous and do reality TV (Diary).

My sentiments exactly. I'm not going to be upset with a reimagining if it's done well. The Dawn remake was a damn good time at the movies. This just looks terrible.

Also, do we have to keep having zombie movies start from the beginning of the infestation at this point? I think everyone who goes to see a zombie film will be okay if you just start the damn movie with the zombies already all over the place. I don't need to be shown how it all starts each time I watch a zombie movie. Especially if you're going to call this a remake of Day.
This isn't a remake of the classic "Day of the Dead", but a sequel to the crapfest that was "Day of the Dead: Contagium".

NOTHING in that trailer even comes close to how the original Day was like...This movie is going to bomb bigtime!! Last time I saw a horror movie that was this horrible looking was BloodRayne.

And we all know how well that movie did in the theaters. o_0
post #38 of 49
This "Dawn of the Dead" flicks looks awful.... there wasn't anything remotely similar to the original.. why not just call it "Zombies Walk Among Us" or something different. If this ever comes out I will not watch it!
But won't the fans of the Trejo-starring "Day Of The Dead" be confused?
Heh. I've never seen so many wire-fu zombies.
Other then House this director looks like they pulled him out of an alley while he was trying not to piss on his cardboard box/home. The casting alone kills the film. Lets try and stop using no talent hacks in anything, anything at all and the world will be a better place.
new interview with the screenwriter of this disasterpiece.. didn't think it was newsworthy.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30713

i didn't read the whole way through. i read this quote about why he wanted to do Day of the Dead and closed the window immediately.

Quote:
Jeff: The biggest reason was Steve Miner. I really like him as a director and he’s done some of my favorite movies, “Friday The 13th Part 2,” “House,” “Warlock” and “Halloween H20.”

Well that answers this question:"why is it called "day of the dead" again? IT TAKES PLACE AT NIGHT".

He wrote Final Destination, so there's some hope.
It really pained me to watch the entirety of that trailer. I was waiting for the "A Sci-Fi Channel Original Movie" title to appear.

It never showed up. I'm still waiting.

On a related note...

...anyone in the DFW area going to the event in February where they're screening the original trilogy (and Diary of the Dead)?

I'm giving Greg Nicotero a big bear-hug if I go(and I will promptly be escorted from the premises).
It's got Ian McNeice neck meat in it. It can't be all bad.

Here's a link to another trailer.

Indeed.
Why is this even being discused. Ignore it and, I promise you, it will go away.
Whoops, must have linked the DVD cover in the wrong way.
I don't know what your problems are, Nick Cannon looks hilarious in this.

*shudder*
