It;s coming....

Defending national champion Florida was a near-unanimous pick for No. 1 in the preseason ESPN/USA Today coaches poll released on Friday.

The Gators, who return all five starters from the squad that cruised past UCLA to win the title in Indianapolis, claimed 30 of the 31 available first-place votes and 772 points. They are 44 points ahead of the No. 2 team, North Carolina, which lost in the second round of last season's NCAA Tournament but adds a highly touted freshman class to star sophomore forward Tyler Hansbrough and a handful of returning upperclassmen.

Another team with high expectations after a premature NCAA Tournament exit, Kansas, is at No. 3, followed by Ohio State, which, even with stud freshman center Greg Oden possibly out until January, corralled the other first-place vote. Pittsburgh and UCLA are tied for fifth.

LSU, a third member of last season's Final Four, is ranked 7th. The fourth Final Four squad, mid-major George Mason, is unranked after being picked second in the preseason Colonial Athletic Association poll behind Hofstra.

There are 10 teams in the preseason poll that ended last season unranked, led by Big Ten challenger Wisconsin at No. 9 and Pac-10 threat Arizona at No. 10. Creighton (No. 23) and Nevada (No. 25) are the only two mid-majors to crack the initial Top 25, although three of the first four in others receiving votes are West Coast Conference kingpin Gonzaga and Wichita State and Southern Illinois from the Missouri Valley.

I predict Florida will make the NCAA tournament, make it to the sweet 16, get beat and people will call the season a disappointment.
I'd like to point out that Michigan received more points that Michigan St. Suck it, Izzo.
UNC were a pleasant surprise last year, with the addition of Ellington, Lawson and Wright they should be a fucking force. I can't wait for the season to begin.
i hope the NCAA continues to underestimate UCLA. Even without Farmar, this team is still a force to be reckoned with.
How are UCLA continuing to get underestimated? They lost their team leader and still managed to get ranked 5th in the country to start the season. That's better then anywhere they were last season until the final rankings.

It sucks that Oden is out till January. He's pretty much a one-year player like Carmello. Ohio State will still be a very good team, but they might struggle a bit till Oden returns and hits full stride. Assuming they make the tourney, this will be one of the teams no one wants to see on their side of the draw.

I saw the video of this, and the uproar that ESPN and other TV/radio stations are making out of this is downright silly.

LUBBOCK, Texas -- As Bob Knight moved one win closer to catching Dean Smith, his temper flared once again, when he used his hand to push a player's chin during a timeout, as if to make him look the coach in the eye.

With more than four minutes to go in Texas Tech's 86-74 victory over Gardner-Webb on Monday night, Red Raiders forward Michael Prince was called for a foul. During the ensuing timeout, Knight approached Prince, and as the player lowered his head, the coach made contact with his chin.

Knight gave a brief statement at the postgame news conference and then answered one question before exiting the room. The incident with Prince was never addressed.

It was win No. 871 for Knight, who is five away from passing Adolph Rupp for second place on the all-time list. He needs nine more victories to surpass Smith for the most wins in Division I history.

Knight's career has featured three national championships, all at Indiana, and plenty of temper outbursts, including run-ins with players.

In 1992, Knight kicked a chair on the bench while son Pat, then a player for him at Indiana and now his assistant and successor-to-be at Texas Tech, was sitting in it. When fans behind the team bench booed, Knight turned and responded with an obscenity.

He was accused of grabbing a player by the throat during a practice in 1997, an episode that was caught on videotape and created the whirlwind that eventually led to his firing from Indiana in September 2000.

Knight was fired for what Indiana officials called a violation of a zero-tolerance behavior policy shortly after he grabbed the arm of a student who greeted him on campus by saying "Hey, what's up, Knight?"

His most infamous moment came in a game against Purdue in 1985, when he threw a chair across the court after being assessed a technical foul.

It's ridiculous that it is a story. If it were any other coach it wouldn't have been an issue.

As for the early games this season, #2 UNC barely escaped Winthrop last night. And #3 Kansas got completely outplayed by Oral Roberts.
Winthrop are a pretty damn good team so I wouldn't really look down on UNC. I've been expecting that type of game ever since I heard about the possible matchup awhile back. Lawson must have been brutal in the 1st half, coach Williams even said so. "(Lawson) was just awful in the first half". Way to shit all over the frosh Roy!

So Kansas just took out #1 Florida in overtime. The game never should have gotten to overtime, but credit Florida for hanging tough. That means that #1 Florida, #2 UNC, #6 LSU, and #7 Wisconsin all lost this week. Ohio State will probably move up to #1 in the AP poll, giving the school the top ranking in both basketball and football. Butler should also jump into the poll after their amazing run.

Carolina and OSU, Wednesday at the Dean Dome. Heels should take this one as long as Hansbrough doesn't play like a big wuss as he did against the Zags.

And the wheels are now starting to wobble for UF - Corey Brewer has mono and Joakim Noah and Billy Donovan are both going in for blood work because they haven't felt great lately either.

Al Horford chimes in, talking about Brewer:

"I hope not to kiss him or drink out of his cup or anything like that."

If only Greg Oden was healthy...

From everything I've gathered, Greg Oden is a raw offensive player. He sounds like a young Emeka Okafor to me. To call him "college basketball's best player", like they were last night, before he's even played a game is fucking ridiculous. Am I missing something? I cringe everytime I hear OSU mentioned as having the best freshmen class. It's a joke considering Carolina has the #1 PG, SG and PF plus 2 other top 100 recruits. And what the fuck is up with half of the announcers and analysts butchering Hansbrough's name? This isn't some kid who plays for SE Missouri St.

Not a bad game last night. OSU couldn't miss a fucking shot. The Heels unlimited talent and playing in front of the home crowd, eventually, was too much to handle. OSU definitely impressed me last night and they should get better as the season progresses.

Finally, what a surprise...the ACC destroys the Big Ten in the challenge again. If the Big Ten couldn't take 'em down last year it's probably never gonna happen.

The Oden hype was a little ridiculous. The guy does look like something special and will add a lot to OSU, but give some credit to the guys on the floor. Both teams looked amazing last night. I wouldn't be surprised to see an OSU-UNC rematch next April.

While it sucked to se OSU lose, it was a great game to watch. Even though I am a OSU fan, I was one of the people that thought they might be a little over-rated. But I think they held their own in the dome, so that was cool.

As far as Oden is concerned, it's not just the announcers who are predicting the greatness of Oden. Bill Simmons from ESPN.com always refers to him as the top pick in the NBA draft (hell, there is a good chance he might have been the top pick last year if it weren't for the new rule) and Andy Katz from ESPN wrote a big article today on Oden.

I'm not sure how good he's gonna be, but right now I don't think he can live up to the hype. although there was this one kid from Akron, OH, who everyone thought couldn't live up to the hype, who happens to play in Ohio. Oh what's his name???

All I know is that if Oden is 75% of what they claim, I like OSU's chances in the tournament this year.

Oden would have been the #1 overall pick if the new rule wasn't in place. There's no questioning that. He's the most highly touted center since Shaq and with the lack of true center's in today's game it's a given the Raptors would've taken him. I don't think anyone could pass on a guy, at 18 years old, who's considered to be the next Bill Russell. The Raptors really got fucked over with that new rule.

Anybody else watch the A&M/Texas game? Unbelievable. Durant is truly amazing. He's 6'9 and he rebounds over 10 boards a game, shoot's 80% from the line and over 40% beyond the arc. Law was making basically everything, for A&M, tonight including a crazy fade away trey over Durant, going towards his off hand, where the ball went about 25 feet in the air before it sunk sending the game to OT and then he hit another 3 to send it to double OT. Law was up at the line with a second left in double OT down 3, where he hit the first FA and when the ref gave him the ball for his second shot, before Texas was anticipating, he threw the ball up immediately where A&M got the rebound but unfortunately the player couldn't put it back for the tie. Just awesome stuff tonight.

do you believe in the power of MEAN GREEN?

Hot damn, FSU won! Woooo hoooo! Keeping the dream alive.

Michigan won, but man did they suck. And up 6 with 6:30 to go they start taking 3 pters with 25 seconds on the shot clock. How many leads do they have to blow before they learn?
Carolina got fucking hosed in the brackets. Somehow Georgetown, the #2 seed in the East, has an easier path to the Elite 8. How are BC, who lost 5 of thier last 7 and their 2nd best player, ranked ahead of Marquette? Texas (#4) are way scarier then Wazzu (#3). The only good thing is they stay in the state for the first set of games. And that damn mask! Can't wait 'till Thursday!
Marquette is without their best player(McNeal) so they won't be an issue.

Louisville playing in Lexington as a 6 seed is a joke.
The issue is Carolina stays close to home, where they always win. Even so McNeal has only recently gone down and he isn't even near the factor Williams was for BC. BC basically suck now by losing out on 5 blocks a game, their biggest win on the road all year is @ FSU. They're playing .500 since Williams was suspended and he's been gone for almost half the season. Talk about a great resume.

And that was because the idiot that got the defensive rebound for FSU let BC knock the ball out of his hands with 5 seconds left and BC scored and won by 1. That hurt, losing both games to BC by 1 point both times. If FSU had won even one of those two games, they might have been in the tourney instead of BC. FSU did win their first NIT game last night vs. Toledo (the MAC champ!) as Smails pointed out, and they host Meechigan Thursday night.

Michigan, on the road, in a pressure game. Wolverine fans are not optimistic, (ok maybe just this one).
