Hot Shots!

Thread Starter
Fox Movie Channel showed the two films back to back last night and I had forgotten how hilarious they are. Charlie Sheen's a natural comedian, and I wish he had gone down that route instead of serious roles alternated with sitcom blandness. Even the second one proves that there was somehow still humor to mine from spoofing "Rambo". I'm considering looking up the DVD's to see if there's a two pack, but a part of me wishes they'd do a third one, even if it wasn't funny, just to see the gang together. Maybe a straight-to-video effort, perhaps bringing back Cary Elwes, being that this was the only role I've ever liked him in.

Anybody have love for these movies? What about a favorite gag? Mine has to be in the second film when Charlie and Martin Sheen, seemingly from "Apocalypse Now", pass themselves by on the river when their voiceovers collide.

Nothing but love.

C'mon now, Elwes ruled in THE CRUSH.

I haven't seen these in a while but the first one was pretty good. Not in the same league as AIRPLANE or THE NAKED GUN but a solid spoof just the same.

Part 2 had some amusing moments but not enough of them. It was cool to see Richard Crenna have some fun with his Trautman character.

Best gag out of either of them is Geronimo jumping out of an airplane yelling "Me!"

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Hot Shots! flicks. Both are great, especially when compared to current spoof movies like the Scary Movie franchise.

Favourite gag, from the ones that I remember: Rowan Atkinson saying he couldn't leave the Iraqi prison because "they tied my laces together"

"Loved you in 'Wall Street!'"
Love these movies, the first more so because it is more focused on spoofing one movie, Top Gun. So many great lines, but my favourite is probably the drill sergeant telling Kristy Swanson to "suck in that chest!"

The "Wall Street" gag is one of the most perfectly-realised spoof jokes ever.

both fantastic movies.

i always enjoyed Sadaam 1000, reforming with bits of his dog, to create a new super K-9 Sadaam.

My fave gag in Part Deux is the one extra who gets shot out of a tree and yells "That's it! Good night!"

Both terrific films.

Both are lots of fun. I think Deux has more laugh out loud material. One of my favorite moments is when, in the middle of a bloody firefight, Robocop's Miguel Ferrer pops up in front of the camera and exuberantly declares, "War... it's fantastic!"

Sheen is great in these films. Maybe when his hair starts going gray he can return to the genre in Naked Gun IV.

This is my favourite spoof joke of all time. Big fan of both movies.

Mmm she looked so good there. Great flicks love the President and Saddam fight in the 2nd one.

The Chicken Arrow never fails to make me wipe tears from my eyes in laughter.

"Gummi Bears! Gummi Bears! Sprinkles! Sprinkles!"

A nice, subtler bit: a carrier named the S.S. Essess.

You'll also got to love how Sadaam was handled.

"Now I will kill you until you die from it!"

Plus Lloyd Bridges doing some good comedy

"We'll settle this the old navy way; The first guy to die, LOSES!"

Classic

Off the top of my head:

Anytime anyone is thrown into the air: "I can see my house from here!"

"Should you miss those, your secondary targets are here and here, a mime school and an accordion factory."

"I just had them lengthened... now they go all the way up."

"What's a chafing dish?"

"What about your noisy landlady?"
"You can do her too."

"Nurse, check his penis. Is it as big as mine?"

I also liked Sheen's speech likening his sister's bosom to military weapons spending corruption. Or at least the look on his and everyone's face: not dissimilar from his face in Wall Street.

The bit where Lloyd Bridges takes a sip from his cup and then says, "Pudding?" and spits on the guy...for some reason that never fails to crack me up.

And when Richard Crenna bites into that sandwich and the mustard squirts out of the pig snout just makes me shiver every time I see it.

I liked the 2nd one better than the first, but they both did a good job following up the Airplane! movies.

On October 15, the President of the United States ordered a covert mission in the Persian Gulf for the purpose of rescuing soldiers taken hostage during Desert Storm. Only a handful of our highest government officials were aware of the operation, as it included an attempt to assasssan... assisss... kill a guy.

Great flicks, although I like Part Deux a bit more. I have an old copy on VHS, may be time to finally get these on dvd.

"the old navy way" is my favorite moment as well. The pause right before Bridges elaborates TOTALLY sells the joke.

Whatever happened to the Italian chick from the first flick? Valerie Galino? She was hot and very funny.

Topper Harley: I don't want to go back.
Ramada Thompson: You don't have to. I don't want to be alone. And by the way... I can go all night, like a lumberjack!
Topper Harley: What about your landlady?
Ramada Thompson: You can do her too.

As the Scary Movies have shown, spoofs are not easy.

The killcounter in the second one gets me every time: Terminator... Robocop... Most Violent Movie EVER!!!
What about the crazy end credits. Recipes and a list of things to do after the movie.

My favorite is probably:

Admiral Benson: Call down to the galley and order up some soup.
Lt. Commander Block: Yes, sir.
Admiral Benson: Ahhh... I love soup. At least I think I love soup. Blasted shell! It's either soup or duck. Which one do you shoot?
Lt. Commander Block: Duck, sir.
[Admiral Benson hits head on desk while ducking]
Lt. Commander Block: Are you alright, sir?
Admiral Benson: Of course I'm alright! Why, what have you heard?

...and regarding the purchase of the DVDs, they're both $5.50 titles. Easy to find on the cheap. No 2-pack that I know of.

The Hot Shots! movies get extra points for having Ryan Stiles in them - I always thought he should be in more spoofs.

"Ow!! Fir! Fir! Squirrel's nest! Pine!!"

There is a two pack at walmart.
