At less than 1/3 of Van Helsing's production budget, it can't be as big of a risk. I know there are mixed feelings about Paul W.S. Anderson's abilities (with some near-Boll extremist hatred on the one end o' the spectrum) and there is a lack of faith in the action-vampire genre due to the Blade and Underworld series' (which I am guilt-ridden apologists for), but I'm up for it. There's no way it can be worse than Bloodrayne or VH. Maybe it could pick up where Hammer's Captain Kronos left off.

Summary: The origins of Dracula and the uprising of the Belmont Clan, a vampire-slaying family who supposedly become humanity's last hope.

Based on: The Konami vidgame franchise Castlevania.

I just hope it has a token pseudo posh arty farty bullshit title like Castlevania: Melody of Despair or Castlevania: Watercolor for the Melancholy or Castlevania: Requiem for Undiagnosed Bipolar Manic Depression or something like that.

I would like to see this film, honest I do...but with this director? boo fucking boo

Not maybe and not likely.

Anderson said in a recent article that one could almost call it "Dracula Begins". Which, in itself, merits a punch in the face.

It was wishful thinking. I want the Hammer "band" to get back together.

The first two Blade films were A-Ok. Of course they had decent directors.

They should do "Dracula Unbound" instead. It's sort of a sequel to "Frankenstein Unbound" Corman's last movie and a damn good one with John Hurt playing a time-traveller meeting Victor Frankenstein, the monster, etc...playing with the angle that these characters really existed. This time it's about a futur World dominated by vampires-esp. Clan Dracula- with a time-traveller going to the past to recruit Bram Stocker. There's a novel about this.

The whip will make or break it.

If they fuck that up, they're screwed.

But posterity may well call it "PWS Anderson Takes a Shit on the Dracula Legend".

This would have been good for del Toro.

When a problem comes along (and it will), they must whip it...

now whip it.
into shape.
shape it up.
get straight.
go forward.
move ahead.
try to detect it.
it's not too late.
to whip it.
whip it good.

Get an industrial/metal cover of Devo's old tune and it's golden (kidding)!

You bastard, that's officially stuck in my head now.

I have mixed feelings about this project... Castlevania is a classic game series and it has potential to be cool, but I'm not sure about Paul helming this one. Most video game movies suck. I did like AVP... so I'll give this one a chance...but the chips are stacked that this could turn into a Van Helsing debacle.

I don't know if this could be good under anyones watch. Like someone already stated, the Vampire killer thing has been doen to death, and mostly not in a good way. Blade 1&2 were great but by 3 Snipes seemed like he was enjoying himself maybe a bit to much, getting caught up in his character.

As long as there's vampires, we'll need someone to stake them... And i'd rather it be a trained professional... "Circle of life", man... or is that "circle of undeath"?

Forget it.

I don't want to judge before this thing has come out but putting Anderson on a concept like this is tempting fate into repeating Van Helsing. He's the same type of director that's gonna produce something big, loud and lifeless. And here you have Dracula to boot.

Just keep Richard Roxburgh away from the casting call. Please.

Or Dominic Purcell, for that matter.

I'm looking forward to this. I wonder why it's going to be direct to DVD though.

Because video games and even video game movies are not art and only art goes to the cinema.

Actually, probably because video game movies have shown to be more often than not duds at the box office. Being that in mind its more money efficient to cut costs and send it to DVD.

The Castlevania III story is said to be the best, but frankly I don't know where that comes from. Its a great game and you get four choices of characters, but storywise, I couldn't you much about it.
But... after a level you could choose to go up, or down! You know how crazy that was!

Yeah, I don't know... maybe the whole Alucard thing is what people liked about the story. I don't remember much about it, though. Just that I liked playing as the different characters.

I am really looking forward to what they do with this.
When you come down to it, are ANY of the video game to movies EVER worth it? Even outside horror (Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter? I'm talking to you!), they've been pretty bad, overall.
I REALLY never got the Alucard appreciation. I supposed to take him seriously? His name is just Dracula spelled backwards.

They should base it off of the Belmont character from Captain N: The Game Master.

So wait, was this in development simultaneously and they just dropped the live-action one for now, or is this a replacement (gear change) project?
No, not a replacement. The live action looks like it's still going to be passed around, but the project's been in talks for a long time now. Anderson being named as director was the closest it was to fruition.

It's not nearly as cleverly scary as Dr. Acula on SCRUBS. He's there's to heal you and feed on you... ouch.
