That's just fucking madness right there. Seriously, what's wrong with Sony? How can they possibly be screwing up every single thing like this?

Between this and other stories I've seen on these boards and in other outlets, I am convinced that the bulk of consumers, and I'm talking about current adopters here, are going to get burned BIG-TIME with this whole HD thing. Sony's HD mini-DVD camcorder, for instance? The format they are selling as a simple home-solution for playback in nearly any DVD player? Yeah, only in Standard Def, pal. You need a Blu-Ray player to play back a 1.4GB (double for dual-layered) mini-DVD recorded in HD or it might EAT YOUR DATA!!!* This is because of the new compression standard (which no other software currently utilizes other than what's provided in the box; this will likely change soon enough, though). At least it comes with A/V AND component cables so you can hook the unit to the tv (or with HDMI purchased in addition), though this defeats the general concept of the only real benefit the format offers. Does the PS3 read mini-DVDs?

Important notice regarding discs recorded in the AVCHD format
This camcorder captures high definition footage in the AVCHD format. Using the enclosed PC software, high definition footage can be copied onto DVD media. However, DVD media containing AVCHD footage should not be used with DVD based players or recorders, as the DVD player/recorder may fail to eject the media and may erase its contents without warning. DVD media containing AVCHD footage may be played on a compatible Blu-ray Discâ„¢ player/recorder or other compatible device. |
And, because I'm a typo-whore (I did this to Nintendo, too) and find it ironic considering the noted possibility of incalculable data purging:
