I'm a sucker too just like you guys. I think it's crap to pay $400 (at the time) for something to break down a few years later. I'm pretty sure all of us take pretty darn good care of these things, so we should expect they last longer than 4-ish years. I had a Nintendo, Sega, PS1, PS2, and never had any problems with them like I have had with the 360 and PS3.

Hell, besides some yellowing my SNES plays just like it did 15 years ago!  The more advanced these machines get, the more chances they will break down. That them's the breaks.

Looking for some advice. I'm pretty sure from reading on here that my brother-in-law's PS3 shit the bed.

He said they were playing, it shut off, beeped a few times, red light is flashing now and it will not turn back on. I think that it's done, but I don't know if there is something else that I can tell him or where he can take it to get it fixed.

He's got an old fatboy, either 40 or 60GB.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that's a pretty good sign that it's dead.

That's what happened to mine. You can get it fixed for $70-$150. The PS3 might last another month or it might last another year, but that same issue will crop up again.

I just bought a new one.

I was afraid of that. I'll have to break his heart.

I got mine the same time he did, I hope it's not going in the shitter. It's been freezing up a little more that usual.

I think that I'll jump off a roof if my shit dies on me.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened to mine. It beeped died, came back on for another few hours. I feel like this should be a mandatory warning on old PS3 fats. When it dies like that the first time it should say, " Back it up and trade it in while it still boots up! When the thing dies it'll eat whatever disc you have in it and you'll lose all your saves."

I'm still pissed that my 360 outlasted my PS3.

The same thing happened to my fat. I was endlessly pissed that I couldn't port any of my old data into my new slim.

I almost forgot Twisted Metal came out; if it weren't for pissed off gamers on other boards complaining about the broken online or Jaffe ripping into a reviewer...any chewer thoughts on the game? Don't see a demo on psn. Probably take a wait and see until the summer, price should go down or be reasonably available used, maybe by then some patches will sort things out.

I've got $90 that's all for ME 3, though SSX might slip in there depending on how my paycheck looks. So, this one's gonna have to take a backseat.

Reviews have been pretty strong across the board, though.

I'm wary because I've heard the single-player is abominably short and you only get access to, like, four cars? There I go, throwing out opinions without any substantiation due to my foggy memory.

ok, so dead PS3. Let me ask another question. If we pull the old hard drive, can we hook it up in an enclosure and try to transfer the game saves to the new ps3? Anyone have any luck doing this before?

I transferred data from a PS3 to an external drive and then to a new drive.  Copy protected data, like many game saves, didn't transfer or weren't originally copied.

The drive itself is encrypted and you can't really get the data off without the original PS3. My new Slim is giving me issues though and won't consistently eject discs. Instead it makes a horrible tchk-tchk-tchk sound like it's trying to eject the disc and it's bumping against something. This has happened with two discs (one a Blu-ray movie and the other a PS3 game) . The solution was to straighten out a paper clip make a tiny little hook on one end and insert it into the drive--after powering off the system--and getting the hook to catch in the hole in the middle of the disc and pulling it out manually.

Needless to say, I'm getting Mass Effect 3 for 360 (and have Borderlands 2 pre-ordered through Amazon for it as well) and will be picking up all multi-platform games for my 360 from now on.

This image, supposedly from Assassin's Creed III just leaked. Oh god I hope its fake.

It's just a marketing image, I think it would be neat to have AC3 based in the American Revolution period, though I really would have preferred the Napoleonic Wars. I don't recall there being many tall building in America back then.

The single player is short, but it's pretty well done. Especially if you're a film person because it's got a very old school grindhouse horror presentation. Nothing to write home about but still entertaining.

Gameplay and visually, it's pretty damn fantastic. The controls take some gettting used to but once you figure it out it's an absolute blast. Also the campaign is insanely difficult. Maybe not like Dark Souls difficult, but like Ninja Gaiden difficult.

Is there any way to completely disable the voice chat?

Nearly every game I try to play online has someone with their voice set to chipmunk. I can handle about 5 minutes of it and then I just quit before my head implodes.

Amazon Instant Video available through PS3 now!

You'll see a new icon in the TV Services menu.  Once you register your device via Amazon's website, you'll have access to all the free on demand video that Amazon makes available to Prime subscribers (assuming you're a Prime subscriber) from the comfort of your couch!  This is aces.

Pretty great news. Now we just have to wait for HBO Go.

Nice!  Thanks for the info!

Yeah, it's 720p max but definitely nice.  I'm a Prime member so it's nice to finally be able to watch those videos on my TV.  Unfortunately I bought a new Apple TV to go with my iPad so I was kind of committing to buying TV shows from Apple.  Still, it's nice for all the episodes I've already bought from Amazon.

Does anyone know how their library stacks up in comparison to Netflix?

Amazon's library is meh to okay. Like Netflix, Amazon offers more quality television shows than it does movies. I think where Amazon shines though is in the capability to purchase quality movies at a relatively cheaper price and be able to access free content. In the past, you could purchase from the PS3 Store or Vudu, but you didn't have a selection of "free" on demand titles. With Amazon, you're getting a library that's a little less impressive than Netflix, but the capability to watch and store all your purchases in one convenient player.

When is this supposed to be coming? I have a free HBO trial right now and HBO Go has so much cool stuff that I haven't seen. Would be great to be able to access it through the PS3.

Yeah, Prime Instant Videos selection is OK but not great.  I am not extremely familiar with it since I am not going to sit and watch TV on my PC when I've got a giant TV in the next room.  Really the only reason I've got Prime is I was able to get the discounted $40 yearly student subscription and I order a ton of stuff through them anyway.  It does kind of make me wish I had a Kindle though so I could take advantage of the free Prime books as well.

I have that same discounted account. Such a good deal for 40 bucks.

So I need a new game...

I haven't played any of the Mass Effect games.  Buy 2 or just start with 3?

Play the second one. The games import your previously saved games, so the "character" you play in part 2 ports over to part 3, which makes the series a little more interesting. Plus, the second one is a better game.

Buy 2 - it's one of the best games I've ever played, and I prefer it to 3. 3 is like an 8 out of 10, and 2 is a 10, if that's not too many numbers.

For 20 bucks on Amazon, can't really beat that I guess.  Done!

I still prefer ME1 to ME2 (and haven't played ME3 yet).  ME1 was so good, it's a shame it's not on PS3.

A while back, a few of you had trouble with your older fat PS3s dying and mine just bit the dust.  I was curious if any of you had it repaired or if all just replaced it with the new ones.

Also, I did manage to get a back-up of my system before it died completely, but didn't get a chance to deactivate the system from my PSN name.  Anyone know if that will cause me any grief with syncing up a new one later on when I can afford it?

I'm especially pissed because it was also my blu-ray player and now I have a few dozen movies I can't watch if I wanted to.

One thing I screwed up at first--your PSN id and your PS3 name are different.  When I logged on to the new system I put in the wrong name by accident.  I had to back up and do it over again.

I had a game disc in mine when it died--I did the "fix" everyone says and got it back up long enough to get the disc out.  Then I started a game installed on the PS3 and it died as it started.  Haven't been able to resuscitate since.  Got a new slim one.  But I had backed mine up as well, so I wasn't devastated, other than I can't play the couple of PS2 games I still had anymore.

Do you know if you can get that as a teacher?  My wife is a teacher and we get some similar discounts at B&N.

Mine never came back to life so I picked up a slim which would be much nicer except that it randomly doesn't eject discs. So I've got a straightened paper clip I've got to use to pull the discs out sometimes. Really annoying. And yet my 360 is still going strong.

Anyone play the Walking Dead game and can recommend?

I've beaten both episodes and I can STRONGLY reccomend.  A huge bounce back from the horrible Jurrassic Park for Telltale and maybe the most I've ever enjoyed an adventure game experience.  This makes me wish that Telltale would do all kinds of other licenses in this style, Resident Evil, The Thing...

Cool, thanks. I'm gonna bite.

Has anyone here had a slim PS3 beep 3 times and turn off with the flashing red light? That happened to my slim PS3 today while I was watching an episode of Braking Bad on Netflix instant. I've had my Slim for about 2 and a half years, I use it maybe 1 to 2 hours per day, and I keep it clean in a well-ventilated area. The temp outside has been close to 100 for about the past 3 weeks, but I typically keep my thermostat set between 70 and 72 degrees.

When it shut down on me this afternoon, I hit the power button to turn off the flashing red light, and turned it back on, which prompted the recovery screen and process. My system appears to be okay now for the time being, but I'm wondering if this is going to be an ongoing issue. Also, it seems most of the people with the YLOD issue have the older fat PS3s.

Do you guys have any advice?
I think that's happened to me one time since I bought the new slim, but never again. Also a note if you hadn't noticed--they changed the power settings set up as to when to turn off the PS3 after inactivity. They separated out game playing vs. watching a movie, Netflix, etc. I started noticing that after my son stopped playing a game, the PS3 would still be on in the morning even though he exited the game. I checked the power settings and noticed it was different settings now.
