To the first point: I don't see that argument holding too much sway given the state of Iraq right now. Not that it's invalid, but with the level of violence that goes on every day, a hanging will probably seem downright quaint to most people. The new government may have more credibility to gain by the execution than to lose from it.
To the second: I think he's far from happy about it, since I always got the impression he valued his own interests far above that of Islam or the Arab world in general, but he's adopted that pose because it's the best/only real option available. Begging for mercy isn't going to do any good, and it's not like he can turn state's witness for crimes against humanity. He's trying to salvage some dignity by acting defiant in the face of the inevitable.
