Recommend comics to me.

Haven't read any comic books for a while since my source died and I've been circling around Preacher, 300, Sin City, Watchmen (is there a tpb? and yes, I know, I've been missing out) and a couple of others, but never actually giving in.

I just found a shop that sells american imports and I want to buy some stuff. I'm looking for trade paperbacks mainly, because even with the horrendous import prices, they still make the most sense money-wise. I don't really want to specify what types of books I want, it can be anywhere from horror to humor, as long as it's what you would call 'pretty fucking great'.

Thanks in advance.

300 was a huge letdown for me. I felt Miller's writing was in his un-aware-self-parody mode.

Watchmen is great. So is Preacher. I'd also recommend 100 Bullets. The first trade is just ok but it just gets better and better.

Nothing original but these are all good comics that won't disapoint you.

Power Pack and Silver Sable. Trust me, classics.

Silver Sable from Spider-Man? ...how?

The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman- available in trades from Image. Conceived as a zombie film that doesn't end. Examines how people go on with their lives after the zombie apocalypse. These are trades that you will burn through in one long sitting, desperate to find out what happens next.

DMZ by Brian Wood- I think the first trade is out from Vertigo. Follows a young photographers intern as he enters New York City during a near-future civil war. He quickly moves into the role of reporter, and interacts with the various sects and pockets of civilization that continue life in the midst of urban warfare.

Nextwave by Warren Ellis. Hardcover trade is out from Marvel. Ridiculously fun superhero adventures- with a cynical and mean spirited sense of humor. Lots of stuff blows up real good, robots get kicked, koala bears explode. It is sublime. A nice dose of intelligently crafted stupidity.

Those are all among my favorites, and all break away from the typical modern fare. All 3 writers have loads of other great series as well. Kirkman's Invincible is a great old fashioned teenaged superhero book. Ellis' Transmetropolitin is a wry Hunter Thompson meets Bladerunner epic.

I've almost finished the fourth Walking Dead trade and this series is quickly losing my interest. I feel the characters reactions are becoming very unrealistic considering the situation they are in.

Don't know how you feel about Superheroes, but the recently-released "The Thing: Idol of Millions" is pretty great.

For a fresh take on super-heroes, I think Busiek's Astro City is the absolute tops.

Gaiman's Sandman rocks as well - but you knew that, right?
I think Astro City is enjoyable only if you've read a lot of comics. Even more so than Watchmen.

Watchmen is a classic, so is Sandman.

And 300 is one of my favorites, so it's all about opinion and taste here.

I'll add Pride of Bagdad, which was recommended by fellow Chewers, with Rising Stars and Planetary, for some superhero stories.

I fucking hate Walking Dead. I read 4 trades, hoping that the story eventually picks up, but it never does. It's like a badly written soap-opera featuring zombies.

Preacher is phenomenal, and definitely a great way to start off. Check it out, you won't regret it.

Y: The Last Man is also awesome, and has the imagination that Walking Dead lacks.

Otherwise, hit Watchmen, Bone (comedy), or anything by Grant Morisson - especially if you're prone to acid flashbacks.

That's not fair. I'm sure there's some people who like reading comics where there's 38 lines of dialogue in a single panel.

Be careful with Grant Morrison (you hinted that comics are very expensive in your area), it's really not for everybody.

Thanks to all.

I shall heed your words.

That's probably true to some extent; still, I think it's pretty strong storytelling on its own, in most cases. Maybe I'll have my wife read it and see what she thinks.

Here are some of the TPBs I own:

Daredevil Visionary vol. 1-3 (Frank Miller's run; get vol. 2 for the Elektra Saga)
Watchmen
Dark Knight Returns (not volume 2)

Mugen-no-Jyunin, Blade of the Immortal - Hiroaki Samura. The story is great...absolutely love the artwork.

Astro City stands up even for non-comics readers. My brother-in-law may never have read a superhero book before--he's French--and he's hooked on them.

Fables. Fables. And Fables. Did I mention to read Fables?

The Punisher under the MAX imprint is always great. Even the stories that aren't that good are still quite entertaining. The Punisher: The Cell and The End are really great one-shots.

Anyone on Garth Ennis's Hitman?
The series, at times, suffered from the same sort of juvenile humour which Ennis' first Punny run did - but it always had an interesting core group of characters, and towards the end of the run it got serious in a really good way. The last 10 or 12 issues are exceptional. Unfortunately, I don't think it's completely in trades yet.

Two that I would recommend without qualification:

Wasteland: One Hundred Years After the Big Wet
http://www.onipress.com/thebigwet/

I believe I found this via a fellow Chewer, my apologies for not giving you credit, I dont remember who it was.

Superman Red Son

A truly excellent re-imagining with a sweet Batman cameo and an excellent twist at the end.

I recently got back on the geeky comic train after a decade long hiatus. Titles that grabbed me (other than the aforementioned Fables), Constantine (Garth Ennis, Mike Carey runs especially), and Lucifer (also written by Mike Carey) which I'm currently enjoying the hell out of.

Grendel Tales: 4 Devils, One Hell

I can't believe no one has mentioned Queen & Country (Greg Rucka, Oni Press). Kickass spy book! I second the recomendations of Y the last man, Walking dead, Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns. I also love the mainstreams Ultimate Spiderman and Daredevil (find Bendis's run specifically). All these mentioned are available in TPB.

Enjoy
Queen & Country's good but very expensive. I got the Marvel Essential Daredevil by Kevin Smith and Bendis and I hated both of them. Bendis' Daredevil is one of the most static comic I've ever read.

Also, stay away from the Walking Dead. I've just finished trade 4 and 5 and it's shit. Unless you're a fan of Days of Our Lives.
Hey Alexor, I agree the fourth WD trade wasn't quite up to par with the first three, and I haven't read the fifth yet, but I stand by my recomendation. Also, I don't where you have been buying your trades but my Queen & Country trades have been the cheapest I've bought avg $14-18 bucks versus $20+ for almost all others. Lastly I'm glad you mentioned Preacher earlier I just read that series this summer holy shit!
Queen & Country are expensive because they usually have a bit less than 90 pages.

Trust me, don't waste your money on the rest of the Walking Dead. I loved the first two trades. The third one was ok. The fourth and fifth are terrible.

Glad you liked Preacher. Try 100 Bullets if you haven't already.

Also, Sleeper kicks ass.

The Walking Dead Ditto

Astro City Ditto

The Wintermen Tale of former Soviet superheroes involved in post-Soviet organized crime. Reads like a crime novel but with plenty of action to boot!
